Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, 500 years ago on October 31, 1517 a thirty-three year old university professor named Martin Luther wrote ninety-five theses as a challenge to debate the practice of
indulgences and posted them publicly on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Then, due to the relatively recent invention of the movable type printing press and relatively good postal and road systems, the theses were carried to all parts of the Christian world within weeks. Because of the storm of controversy and feelings of independence that Luther set off by this invitation to debate and all that came after, we remember this date as the beginning
of the Protestant Reformation and often call it Reformation Day. Although there had been several attempts to reform the church before Luther came along, God gave him exceptional abilities and raised him up at the right time to attempt true reform in the church; an attempt that eventually resulted in a breaking
away from what became known as the Catholic Church by the reformers who later were known as Protestants. Many things led to Luther posting the ninety-five theses in 1517. After a narrow escape from death during a
lightning storm, Luther had changed from studying law to first becoming an Augustinian monk in 1505 and then a priest in 1507. His superiors at the monastery soon recognized his academic abilities and directed him to begin studying for his doctorate at Wittenberg University the next year. In 1510 he went to Rome and was disillusioned by what he saw there, especially the mechanical faith and the corruption he witnessed. This experience added to the spiritual restlessness that Luther had been
experiencing for some time. He was deeply aware of his own sin and his absolute inability to earn God’s favor on his own even though many in the church taught that a person could be saved, with the help of God’s grace, by doing things that would be right in God’s sight. Even when

forgiveness was pronounced to him, Luther wasn’t calmed because the church’s stance was that a person had to be truly sorry for
their sins to be forgiven. Luther contended that it was difficult, if not impossible, for a person to be sure that they were truly sorry and not really just fearful of hell. After earning his doctorate in theology, Luther taught at Wittenberg. In 1515 he began teaching on Paul’s letter to the Romans and it affected him deeply. He wrote, “My situation was that, although an impeccable monk, I stood before God as a sinner troubled in conscience, and I had no confidence that my merit would assuage Him. Night and day I pondered until I saw the connection between
the justice of God and the statement ‘the just
shall live by his faith.’ Then I grasped that
the justice of God is that righteousness by which, through grace and sheer mercy, God justifies us through faith. Thereupon I felt myself to be reborn and to have gone through open doors into paradise. The whole of Scripture took on a new meaning...This passage of Paul became to me a gate to heaven.” Then, with the support of several colleagues, Luther began to speak out against corruption in the church. He criticized the worship of relics and the supposed blessing or reduced time in purgatory given. He also
opposed the sale of indulgences. In this practice the popes, who claimed to have authority over a “spiritual treasury” containing the merits of all the saints of the past, could direct that some of these merits could be applied to individuals in order to reduce their time in purgatory. Some people thought that their indulgences also involved
the forgiveness of their sins. In 1517 a Dominican monk named Tetzel was indirectly authorized by Pope Leo X to raise money to help fund the rebuilding of the
basilica of St. Peter by granting indulgences to everyone who contributed to the project. Tetzel even had a catchy jingle to help the fundraising: “As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, another soul from purgatory springs.” The sale of indulgences was popular in Luther’s region and he saw how easily people were misled by quick and easy paths to salvation. And so Luther came out with the ninety-five theses as a challenge to debate the practice of indulgences. Among the theses he held that the true treasure of the church is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not the merits of saints, and that no pope had the power to release souls from purgatory. Luther said that God’s forgiveness could not be bought or sold when He offers it freely through faith in Jesus Christ. Luther’s protest against Rome in an effort to reform the church was the spark that touched off a multifaceted religious and political explosion that no one could control and that took decades to calm. It is Luther’s commitment to and wholehearted emphasis on the full and complete forgiveness of a person’s sin and their reconciliation with God by God’s grace through faith in Christ alone that sparked the Reformation and what we
remember 500 years later this October 31st.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all
comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so
that we may be able to comfort those who are in
any affliction, with the comfort with which we
ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians
1:3-4 Have you ever had the opportunity to offer comfort to someone who was going through a hardship similar to what you may have experienced before? When we can understand a person’s problem, we are better equipped to pass along advice and comfort because of our own experiences. Perhaps, after passing through troubled waters and coming out on
the other end, you realize that God, in His great wisdom, allowed you to go through that so that you could reach out to others fighting similar battles. That’s a big part of
CONNECTING PEOPLE TO CHRIST! It’s true—we are equipped to offer comfort to others when we have experienced God’s
comfort to us—COMFORT FROM
COMFORT. God comforts us so that we may be able to comfort those with the same comfort! I have a dear friend whose life seems to have been one form of affliction after another—from the time I first met her over ten years ago. Severe health issues (life threatening!), financial hardships (living hand to mouth daily), the pain of broken relationships with loved ones. You name it. But God has given this woman a solid foundation of faith and filled her with love and concern for OTHERS. Whenever I’ve rushed to her side to offer comfort in a crisis, she ends up comforting ME! And she has me laughing within a few minutes. She refuses to focus on her own suffering but keeps her eyes on God who has promised to “supply all {our} needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ
Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 (And God DOES
supply her needs—day by day and minute by
minute. Just when she needs it. She lives
every moment in that comfort from God!) I find this amazing—someone who needs comfort is there to comfort her comforters! What is the secret? I like to think of myself as a comforter—an encourager. It’s my love language. But I
don’t always deliver as I think I should. What
is missing in my life that is so present in my Friend’s? I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. (Especially since my Friend’s situation has worsened.) This is what God has revealed to me:
In order to pass along God’s comfort—we
must first be willing to receive His comfort
to us! What? Is that a problem? Why
wouldn’t we receive it? Let’s take an honest look. There are times when I’m just not through wallowing! Yes—wallowing in my misery! Do you remember Jesus asking people who had come to Him for healing if they wanted to be healed? It may seem like a
dumb question. Of course they want it! But—we humans are much more complicated than that. If we’re honest, we just want to be miserable and feel sorry for ourselves—at least for a while. If we’re honest, we recognize that we want to stay mad at someone—or the world—or God! When the God of all comfort
comes to us with His amazing gift of comfort, we turn away and…continue wallowing! And here’s something else I realized. As a firm believer, I know to turn to God when the really big things hit. That’s when I just want to climb up in God’s lap and let him love and comfort me. That’s when I cling to Him for
strength and wisdom and peace through His comfort. BUT…it’s the little things that trip me up. The little irritations of the day. How about you? That’s when we tend to forget that God is still there—in the little details of life—to guide and comfort us. I’m learning though! God is patient and never gives up on me/us. And I know that, as the world sees how I handle those small irritations (with grace and patience?) they will see Jesus through that and will wonder what it is that keeps me cool. (Oh, boy! I’m still learning!)
We need to learn to OPEN OURSELVES
UP TO GOD’S STRENGTH AND
COMFORT AND WISDOM in the
everyday part of our lives as well as the big
crises and RECEIVE HIS COMFORT so
that we can SHOW HIS COMFORT TO
OTHERS in CONNECTING PEOPLE TO
CHRIST!
COMFORT FROM COMFORT. BUT FIRST. . . .
The Good News October 2017 5
“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting
together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another...and all the more as you
see the Day approaching.” ~ Hebrews 10:25
“Oh, magnify the Lord with me. And let us exalt His name together.” ~ Psalm 34:3
Many times when someone moves from a community they miss their church greatly; for it is hard to replace the friendships and comfort that they have had with their previous church. This was recently noted by the Noble family who moved to South Dakota. The move has gone well but they are missing their church family at CLC a lot! Having a church home is very beneficial in this age when the culture is increasingly
secular. To be in a family of like-minded believers...you can find encouragement in your faith journey, have resources for spiritual questions, and have support during the hardships in your life. Hebrews 10:25 shows us the value of meeting together and being encouragers to each other until the time that Christ comes again. God directs us to gather together to worship Him, and be a family of support to each other. Christ Lutheran Church is a close knit family of God where members truly CARE for each person. We each have the opportunity to reach out and welcome visitors
into our family and offer to CARE for them. I encourage you to reach out to those who are new and may be searching for a church home; or who may be struggling with their faith. You may want to introduce them to one of the Pastors. Don’t wait for someone else to extend their hand...be that smile and voice of CARE-ing to all who attend CLC! The scriptures in the Bible show the importance of the church family in the following 6 ways:
1. It provides consistent Bible teaching...through small groups, Sunday school classes, Bible studies, etc. In 2
Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, connecting and training in righteousness.”
2. We honor God together through worshipping together...whether it be through serving, preaching, or music. Psalm 34:3, “Oh, magnify the Lord with
me. And let us exalt His name together.” 3. The church provides a practical
framework for accountability. As relationships and friendships grow
someone is there to encourage you, rebuke you when necessary, and to rejoice with you! Proverbs 27:17 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
4. We not only receive support within the church, but we are able to give it as well. Our calling in the church is to contribute...not just to receive. To CARE!!! When we are in close fellowship with other believers...we are better able to know when they need support and prayer. In Ephesians 6:7, “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people.”
5. There is a time when we need to learn to feed, not just be fed, as read in Matthew 28:18-20. We can evangelize, teach, encourage, and “disciple” our church family.
6. When trials and troubles come in our life a support system is vital. When in need your brothers and sisters in Christ will uphold you in prayer and assist you with the practical things in your life...like meals, childcare, and everyday assistance. Galatians 6:2 encourages us to “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you
will fulfill the law of Christ.” Recently the value of belonging to the family of God and having a church home was experienced at CLC. A beloved child of God of a CLC family died unexpectedly. The outpouring of love and support was overwhelming to the family. One of the daughters was home the week before the funeral. She was amazed at the people that stopped by their home expressing their sympathy and love. The food that was brought, the hugs that were given, and the faith that was shared was truly a witness of Galatians 6:2. A church family shares the love
of Christ as they CARE! We hope your church family is a treasured gem in your life… priceless…as you are cared for and blessed by God and other believers. To God Be the Glory! In Christian love,
CARE Coordinator

A Healthier You: Living Well
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
~ 1 Corinthians 10:31
Flu season is upon us!! The flu is caused by the influenza virus and is a contagious respiratory virus. Symptoms often present suddenly and may include the following:
fever, at times accompanied by chills; cough; sore throat; runny/ stuffy nose; headaches; fatigue; muscle aches; at
times, vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children); Mild to severe illness may occur, and the
virus can cause death.
Recommendations for flu prevention include the following:
Flu vaccination
Family/ caretakers of infants should be vaccinated against
the flu
Good handwashing, use hand sanitizer when unable to wash hands
Avoid spending time around sick people, wait until they are feeling better to visit
If you are sick with the flu, stay home from work or school to avoid spreading the flu
The CDC recommends flu vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older especially
those individuals at high risk of serious health complications related to the flu -There are some contraindications to the flu vaccination including:
1. a prior life-threatening severe allergy to the flu vaccination or any of its components 2. you have a history of Guillan-Barre syndrome 3. you are not feeling well (it is often okay to receive the flu vaccine if you have a mild
illness, but consult with your doctor first)
If any of these apply to you, discuss influenza vaccination further with your healthcare provider to know if the vaccine is recommended specifically for you.
The Healthcare Ministry is planning an upcoming virtual walk for the Christmas season- “Journey to Bethlehem”. The Kick-Off will take place at West Wetlands Park on October 21st. We hope to walk, run, bike, and/or skate our way from Yuma to Bethlehem! More information to come!!
Are there specific health-related topics you are interested in learning more
