SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1972, THE NORTHWEST FILM
CENTER SCHOOL OF FILM HAS HELPED THOUSANDS
OF INDIVIDUALS TO FIND AND CULTIVATE THEIR
PERSONAL VOICE AS STORYTELLERS, AND TO HELP
CREATE COMMUNITY AROUND CINEMA'S POTENTIAL
TO ADVANCE CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING AND FUEL
SOCIAL CHANGE. ONE OF THE LARGEST COMMUNITY-
BASED FILM ARTS PROGRAM IN THE COUNTRY, THE
SCHOOL OFFERS A COMPREHENSIVE, OPEN-TO-ALL
CURRICULUM IN MEDIAMAKING AND APPRECIATION,
INCLUDING THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK TOWARD A

ARTIST STATEMENT:
I AM INTERESTED IN THE DETAILS THAT MAKE PEOPLE OVERCOME
THEIR PRECONCEPTIONS. DETAILS CHANGE MINDS IF THEY CAN
BE SEEN. DURING MY SIX YEARS IN THE OREGON ARMY
NATIONAL GUARD, I FOUND MY FELLOW SOLDIERS TO BE DIVERSE
AND COMPLEX, EVEN THOUGH A SIMPLE BLANKET OF
CAMOUFLAGE AND IDEALIZED PATRIOTISM COVERED US ALL. IN
DRILL, I WANTED TO CAPTURE THE DETAILS AND EXPERIENCES OF
TWO BEST FRIENDS, THE HUMAN BEINGS BEHIND THE UNIFORM.
BIOGRAPHY:
JEFFREY RICHARDSON GRADUATED WITH HONORS FROM PORTLAND
STATE UNIVERSITY WITH A BS IN FILM STUDIES AND TIME BASED ART, AND
NOW HOLDS A CERTIFICATE IN FILM FROM THE NORTHWEST FILM CENTER
SCHOOL OF FILM. HIS EXPERIMENTAL VIDEOS HAVE SCREENED AT THE
MINNEAPOLIS UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL, THE PORTLAND
DOCUMENTARY AND EXPERIMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL AND OTHER VENUES.
AN ACTIVE MEMBER AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE VIDEO PERFORMANCE
GROUP, WEIRD FICTION, HE IS CURRENTLY DIRECTING A SERIES OF
SUBVERSIVE COOKING EPISODES FOR THE CENTER FOR GENOMIC
GASTRONOMY.

PROJECTIONISTS ARE BECOMING THE OBSOLETE MILKMEN OF TOMORROW BECAUSE OF THE AUTOMATION OF MOVIE THEATRE EQUIPMENT.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
THE MAN BEHIND THE GLASS SPOTLIGHTS A DYING PROFESSION THAT IS
USUALLY UNSEEN BY EVERYDAY PEOPLE. WITH THE CURRENT SUCCESS
OF THE MOVIE AVATAR IN MIND, I EXPLORE THE PROS AND CONS OF
DIGITAL PROJECTION, AS COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL 35MM FILM. WHILE
NEITHER FORMAT IS A REPLACEMENT FOR THE OTHER, THIS
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT IS BEING FORCED ONTO THE CONSUMER
BY AN INDUSTRY THAT CARES MOSTLY ABOUT POPCORN SALES.

EXPERIMENTAL FILM, BLENDING DIFFERENT
MEDIUMS OF VIDEO AND SOUND, BUT CHOSE
TO GO A DIFFERENT DIRECTION FOR HIS
LATEST PROJECT, THE MAN BEHIND THE
GLASS, WHICH HE MADE AFTER BEING A
PROFESSIONAL MOVIE PROJECTIONIST FOR 7
YEARS AND PERSONALLY WITNESSING THE
INDUSTRY'S TRANSFORMATION ALMOST
OVERNIGHT. IN ADDITION TO HIS EXPERTISE
IN THE PROJECTION BOOTH, HE OPERATES
DOAPW WRESTLING, WHICH COVERS LIFE PRO
WRESTLING EVENTS. HAVING EARNED A
CERTIFICATE IN FILM FROM THE NORTHWEST
FILM CENTER SCHOOL OF FILM, HE IS NOW AT
WORK ON A DRAMA INVOLVING AN ESCAPE
FROM MARTIAL LAW.

I MADE FLOATERS AS A WAY TO HELP ME COPE WITH
MYODESOPSIA (EYE FLOATERS), WHICH I HAVE HAD FOR OVER 10
YEARS. I ENJOY FILMS AND BOOKS THAT INCORPORATE
SURREALISM, SCIENCE FICTION, HORROR AND PSYCHOLOGICAL
DRAMA AND WAS INSPIRED BY THE SHADOW OUT OF TIME BY H.
P. LOVECRAFT. AT ITS CORE, FLOATERS IS A HUMAN DRAMA
EXPLORING HOW A COMMON MEDICAL CONDITION CAN DRIVE
SOMEONE TOWARDS A COMPLETE STATE OF PSYCHOSIS.

FOCUSES ON NARRATIVE FICTION, WITH AN
EMPHASIS ON SCIENCE FICTION, SURREALISM,
HORROR AND BLACK COMEDY. HE HAS ALSO
WORKED ON VARIOUS DOCUMENTARIES AND
HAS BEEN IN CHARGE OF VISUALS FOR
NUMEROUS MUSIC AND FILM SHOWS IN
PORTLAND, EUGENE AND VANCOUVER. HIS FILMS
HAVE SCREENED AT ARTISTS' TELEVISION

MOVE BACK TO HIS BIRTHPLACE, LOS ANGELES,

I AM INTERESTED IN PROTAGONISTS WHO SOMEHOW CATHARTICALLY
WORK THROUGH A LIFE EXPERIENCE AND MOVE ON. I LIKE TO SELECT
ISSUES THAT CONCERN RELIGION, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, RACE AND
POLITICS-- ALL THE "NO-NOS." BY CALLING OUT INJUSTICES, CHANGE CAN
HAPPEN. WHAT A DELIGHT IN GETTING TO KNOW FRANK WESLEY, THE
SUBJECT OF MOMENT BY MOMENT. IN TELLING HIS LIFE EXPERIENCE AND
HOW HE FINDS INNER PEACE, I HOPE I WAS ABLE TO SHARE A "RAY OF
HOPE," IF ONE EXISTS.
BIOGRAPHY:
CHARLIE CALABRIA (A.K.A. C. FRANCO CALABRIA) HAS AN MA IN URBAN
PLANNING FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AND SPENT MUCH OF
HIS PRE-PORTLAND LIFE AS A MANAGER FOR THE CITY AND COUNTY OF
SAN FRANCISCO DURING THE AIDS AND HOMELESS CRISES OF THE 1980S.
HIS FIRST SHORT FILM, IN THE GAME, SCREENED AT THE NEWFILMMAKERS
SERIES OF ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES IN NEW YORK. HAVING EARNED
HIS CERTIFICATE IN FILM FROM THE NORTHWEST FILM CENTER SCHOOL OF
FILM, HE IS NOW PRODUCING CODE OF INJUSTICE, ABOUT THE
DISCRIMINATION OF THE MILITARY AGAINST GLBT INDIVIDUALS.

I WAS INSPIRED TO MAKE
POSITIVE BECAUSE I WANTED TO
PRESENT ABORTION NOT AS A
CONDEMNING CHOICE, BUT AS A
PERSONAL DECISION. IN MY
FILMS, I OFTEN EXPLORE
CONCEPTS IN EXPERIMENTAL
FORMS. HOWEVER, FOR THIS
PROJECT AND THIS SUBJECT, I
DECIDED TO MAKE A
TRADITIONAL NARRATIVE FILM TO
HELP THE AUDIENCE IDENTIFY
WITH THE CHARACTERS AND

MANY OF MY STORIES CENTER ON THE THEME OF
MEMORY LOSS AND HOW SOMEONE IN UNFAMILIAR
SURROUNDINGS ATTEMPTS TO UNDERSTAND A NEW
WORLD. IN ASTRAY, I USED VERY LITTLE DIALOGUE TO
KEEP THE STORY COMPELLING, TRYING INSTEAD TO TIE
EVERYTHING TOGETHER USING A DRAMATIC
FRAMEWORK. THE PRODUCTION OF THIS FILM IS
INTENDED TO HELP ME GARNER THE RECOGNITION TO
PRODUCE A FULL LENGTH FEATURE IN THE FUTURE.

OF LIMITATIONS INTRIGUES ME. THIS
SHORT DOCUMENTARY, TEACHER
TIME, USES ONE TEACHER'S
SOUNDSCAPE AND THE PACING OF
IMAGES TO CONVEY HOW HE MEETS
THE CHALLENGE OF ACHIEVING
REQUIRED LEVELS OF STUDENT
PERFORMANCE WITHIN IMPOSED
TIME CONSTRAINTS. BECAUSE I
HAVE INSIDER KNOWLEDGE OF
PUBLIC EDUCATION, IT IS MY MOST
PERSONAL FILM TO DATE. THE
ACTIVE NATURE OF THE CAMERA AND
THE ABSENCE OF ANYTHING
SCRIPTED ALSO SETS IT APART FROM
MY PREVIOUS WORKS.

TEACHING, AND EXISTENTIAL CONSIDERATIONS ARE RECURRENT THEMES
IN HER WORK. SHE HOLDS AN M. ED. DEGREES FROM WESTERN OREGON
UNIVERSITY AND EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, AS WELL AS A
CERTIFICATE IN FILM FROM THE NORTHWEST FILM CENTER SCHOOL OF
FILM. HER NEXT FILM WILL EXPLORE THE DETAINEE EXPERIENCE AT
NATZWEILER-STRUTHOF, A FORMER NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP IN FRANCE.

I AM INSPIRED BY THE WORK OF GUS VAN SANT,
KENNETH ANGER, ANDY WARHOL, MAYA DEREN, AND
MICHEL GONDRY AND AM INTRIGUED BY COMPLEX
CHARACTERS WHO SLOWLY REVEAL LAYERS OF
THEMSELVES TO THE VIEWER AS THE STORY
UNFOLDS. I ALSO LIKE WORKING WITH LOTS OF
DIFFERENT TEXTURES, AND THE CHALLENGE OF
TELLING A STORY THROUGH VISUALS USING
IN-CAMERA EFFECTS. MAKING MEL & KATE GAVE ME
THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE ALL OF THESE
ELEMENTS. FILMING IN MINI-DV, 16MM AND HI-8
ALLOWED ME TO CREATE DIFFERENT LOOKS FOR
DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE FILM, TO DEVELOP MY
MAIN CHARACTER AS SHE DEALS WITH THE LOSS OF
HER BELOVED PARTNER.
