THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the fountain of ☩living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation.

Amen.

Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness.

Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

Page 3: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters

and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.

Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom.

Page 4: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit.

By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all.

We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love.

Page 5: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

Amen.

NARRATIVE READING: ISAIAH 5:1-7; 11:1-5

Chapter 5

1Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. 2He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.

Page 17: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

3And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? 5And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. 6I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

Page 18: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

7For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry!

Chapter 111A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 2The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.  3His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.

Page 19: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; 4but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.

L: Word of God, word of life.

C: Thanks be to God.

Page 20: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

PSALM 107: 1-9, 43

L: 1Give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good, for God’s mercy endures forever.

C: 2Let the redeemed of the Lord proclaim that God redeemed them from the hand of the foe,

Page 21: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

L: 3gathering them in from the lands; from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

C: 4Some wandered in desert wastes; they found no path to a city where they might dwell.

L: 5They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits languished within them.

C: 6Then in their trouble they cried to the Lord, and you delivered them from their distress.

Page 22: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

L: 7You led them on a straight path to go to a city where they might dwell.

C: 8Let them give thanks to you, Lord, for your steadfast love and your wonderful works for all people.

L: 9For you satisfy the thirsty soul and fill the hungry with good things.

C: 43Whoever is wise will ponder these things, and consider well the Lord‘s steadfast love.

Gospel: Mark 12: 1-3

P: The holy gospel according to Mark.

C: Glory to you, O Lord.1Then he began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower; then he leased it to tenants and went

to another country. 2When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the vineyard. 3But they seized him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.

P: The gospel of the Lord.

Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

Page 33: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORD

Let us pray.

Praise and thanks to you, holy God, for by your Word you made all things: you spoke light into darkness, called forth beauty from chaos, and brought life into being. For your Word of life, O God, we give you thanks and praise.

Page 40: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

By your Word you called your people Israel to tell of your wonderful gifts: freedom from captivity, water on the desert journey, a pathway home from exile, wisdom for life with you. For your Word of life, O God,

we give you thanks and praise.

Page 41: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

Through Jesus, your Word made flesh, you speak to us and call us to witness: forgiveness through the cross, life to those entombed by death, the way of your self-giving love. For your Word of life, O God,

we give you thanks and praise.

Page 42: Sunday, November 22, 2015 Isaiah's Vineyard Song Service of the Word.

Send your Spirit of truth, O God; rekindle your gifts within us: renew our faith, increase our hope, and deepen our love, for the sake of a world in need. Faithful to your Word, O God, draw near to all who call on you; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory forever. Amen.
