Pastor’s Corner SUNDAY REFLECTION: ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday’s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus’ teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel’s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ’s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

PASTOR’S VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Community of Good Shepherd is intentional about evangelizing and making disciples in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, especially by seeking out the lost in need of reconciliation and conversion of heart to God, the Church, to oneself and others, so that all may experience the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus.

Vocations Corner FR. MATTHEW TATYREK Diocese of Fort Worth Pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lindsay, TX Priestly Ordination: 2016 | Hometown: Vernon, TX

“Being able to see myself live this life of a priest with joy is my greatest treasure…”

While studying at Texas Tech University with the ROTC program, Matthew’s original plan was to become a JAG Officer. It was there that his Catholic faith, which he grew up with, became more personal through the campus ministry offered at the university. Eventually, he replaced ROTC with volunteer experiences through the campus ministry. Matthew started seriously discerning the priesthood through a men’s small group on campus. Through discussions on faith and prayer, along with his own personal relationship with Christ, he felt God leading him toward seminary. After finishing his degree, he attended Holy Trinity Seminary for two years, then the Pontifical North American College in Rome for seminary. After ordination, Fr. Matthew Tatyrek served at St. Michael’s in Bedford and Nolan Catholic High School. He is now the Pastor of St. Peter’s in Lindsay, TX, enjoying new experiences as a Pastor. “I just want to respond with gratitude and thanksgiving for this call to the priesthood.”

The Vigil Project is a community of musical artists that was formed in January 2016. Featuring a collective of seasoned singer/songwriters and worship leaders (Andrea Thomas, John Finch, Shawn Williams, and Greg&Lizzy), TVP exists to invite the Church to a fresh encounter with God and to deep prayer through the experience of beautiful music. In less than two years, they’ve quickly garnered international acclaim through the release of two music video series’ (“Lent and Easter” and “Advent and Christmas”) that have helped set a new standard globally for quality in the Catholic music industry. TVP maintains a seasonal touring schedule between producing new music/film projects and finding creative ways to invite and unite the universal Church in prayer. Dear Friends & Families of Holy Trinity Catholic School,

I write to you with great hope and excitement: Our 2018-2019 Annual Fund is underway, and we need your help to achieve our ultimate goal! This September, Holy Trinity received $72,000 in gifts from North Texas Giving Day which jump started our Annual Fund for the 2018-2019 school year. This outstanding support delivered on North Texas Giving Day enabled Holy Trinity to reach 36% of our Annual Fund goal of $200,000.

Your generous donation to the Holy Trinity Catholic School Annual Fund directly supports our standards of excellence. Each year the cost of education increases 2.5% and your gift to our annual fund helps to offset this increase. Since tuition alone covers only 70% of our operating budget, our Annual Fund becomes a significant means to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Holy Trinity Catholic education. Gifts we received last year made a real difference in advancing our mission and vision, enhancing our curriculum, and improving our aging facility.

Donate now at www.holytcs.org. Thank you for your support!

Natural Family Planning

Want to postpone pregnancy? Having difficulty conceiving? Trying to stay in line with Catholic teaching? Natural Family Planning (or NFP) is a natural and effective form of family planning. Through use of the Billings Ovulation Method, couples are able to track the woman’s natural and unique signs of fertility and infertility each day in order to postpone or to help achieve pregnancy. It should not be confused with the “rhythm method” as it can be used by women in all stages of life and is scientifically proven to be 99.5% effective when properly used. It is 100% natural and in line with Church teaching.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Next Date Night: December 1 As a child, I grew up in church. We attended services twice on Sunday and every Wednesday night, without fail. We volunteered every week during the summer months to make and serve food to the members of the church. I was very involved in the youth group every step of the way as I was growing up.

As I entered my teenage years, I realized that my focus on God was one of fear alone. I knew the messages of love but could not understand them. The messages of fear, however, were resounding in my mind. I eventually developed a distaste for the teachings I endured and left the church. Over the next several years, my distaste for the teachings I heard while growing up turned into bitterness toward God and religion in general.

As I grew older, I became more aware of the consistent messages of love I received throughout my life. And once I understood that these messages of love were actually from Jesus, I was hooked. I had to find my way back to a loving relationship with God.

I set out to find a new church home. All I really knew at that point was what to avoid. I knew I could not return to the fear-based teachings with which I grew up.

I visited many churches of varying religions over the years: Baptist, Lutheran, Jewish, Non-Denominational, LDS, Jehovah’s Witness, United Church of Christ, and others. Nothing seemed right. Something was off at each of these places.

Never did I think I would become Catholic. I had not even considered it because I felt I would not be welcomed. Jesus was obviously not OK with me feeling this way. Although I cannot properly articulate exactly what transpired to lead me to the Faith, I can say that I eventually landed on the website for Good Shepherd Catholic Community, and I knew this was where I belonged. It was a very strange feeling to simply know this was the right move for me.

The motto of GSCC is a powerful one: “In welcoming all, we form disciples who know, love, and serve God and neighbor.” It does not assume that you’re necessarily OK just the way you are, sins and all. What it does convey, however, is that we are all welcomed here. It provides an invitation to learn and grow. It implies that we aren’t alone in our individual journeys. And finally, it sets the expectation that we are to seek out and love both God and those around us. And in my observation, the good people of GSCC execute this motto very well.

It feels good to finally understand that although I must respect God and obey Him, that he does indeed love me. I look forward to healing and growing my faith here with you.

Advent Angel Trees Kick Off Nov. 24

Help Good Shepherd ensure that each child, teenager, parent, and elderly person represented by an ornament on one of our Advent Angel Trees has a special Christmas. Simply take an ornament (or two or more...), purchase or donate the items requested on the ornaments, and return the ornament(s) with the gifts to the Bride’s Room by Sunday, Dec. 9.

Now in its 13th year, Good Shepherd’s Annual Advent Angel Tree program serves hundreds of people in need both near and far. Each year we set up Christmas trees in our Narthex during the first three weeks of Advent. On the trees are hundreds of ornaments with printed requests for all kinds of gifts and items needed by people in our community. Parishioners take these ornaments off the trees, shop for the items on the ornaments, and then return the ornaments and gifts to the parish. The Outreach Services Ministry then distributes the items to those in need through our partner agencies.

Gifts this year will be donated to Cassata Catholic High School, Catholic Charities Fort Worth, GRACE, Good Shepherd’s Honduras Mission Program, Loving Care Pregnancy Center, SafeHaven of Tarrant County, the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, and people served by the Good Shepherd Visitation Ministry.

Thank you so much for your continued generosity and outpouring of love during this holy season Advent. Your kindness touches the hearts of hundreds of people in our community and Honduras.

Healing & Hope

As we approach Thanksgiving, continue the work of respecting the life, dignity, and rights of the unborn and born – especially the poor and unwelcome.

November 18 is the 2nd

World Day of the Poor. When you hear the word “poor,” what do you think of? Another demand on me? Lazy? Bad luck? Hungry? Homeless? Thank God it’s not me!

Pope Francis invites you to learn more about material poverty where God’s people do not have the basic things needed to live and thrive in dignity: nutritious food, adequate housing, safe neighborhoods, good education, healthcare, decent jobs with fair pay, and things that many of us take for granted.

Prison Ministry Pen Pals Needed

If you’re looking for an impactful way to answer God’s call to live the Gospel, then please consider becoming a Pen Pal to a prison inmate through Good Shepherd’s Prison Ministry. A group of GSCC parishioners (and prayer warriors) have been writing to inmates, and it has been an outstanding way for them to serve and lift up prison inmates.

Parishioners use aliases and Good Shepherd’s mailing address to maintain anonymity. They also prepare correspondence at times and places when it is most convenient for them.

“Simply writing a note or sending a card or a scripture verse once a month, or even writing a brief reflection to recent homily you enjoyed, makes such a positive difference in the life of an inmate.”

Here’s what a few inmates have told us about our Pen Pal Program:

“Thank you for your letters. They are light in darkness. I share them with others and I just want you to know they are so welcome and I thank you so much for writing me. May God bless you all, you are such a giant in my mind to have so much with family and still have time to write us.”

“I can't explain in words how much your encouragement has helped me.”

“How nice it is to hear your name called during the mail call time, and how much it means to me.”

“The retreat changed me forever. I am a child of God who was forgiven. I was able to move ahead without the awful guilt and shame.” - Rachel Retreat Testimony

May you have a blessed and holy Thanksgiving, filled with love and gratitude. And if you want to move ahead without guilt and shame after abortion, call us. We can help.
