DECEMBER 16, 2012 BULLETIN RAY’S REMARKS: DOES SILENCE GIVE LIBERTY? Much unnecessary confusion, trouble and pain has been directly linked to people who have decided to disregard the written rules to do what has not been explicitly allowed. Their mantra is, “Well, it doesn’t say we can’t do it!” This is no less true in the church. In a effort to promote will worship (what one wants to do in spite of what is acceptable) or to satisfy those who desire their ears tickled (that things be done as they desire) (cp. 2Ti 4:3-4), many seek authority to do in worship of almighty God, what he has not commanded to be done. When God has not explicitly explained what we are to do, (where he is silent) are we given liberty to do as we will and expect that it will be acceptable to God? Some might claim, “Well things have changed since the scriptures were given and new situations have arisen?” Such an expression is two fold. It denies the scriptures are complete in addressing all the needs which the saints may face. Such a claim would deny that Jesus “was in all points tempted like as we are” (Heb 4:15) for certainly there are situations now which were not in existence when Jesus walked this earth. Such a claim denies God in his foresight has provided for our success regardless of the situation. However, the scriptures provide all we need for “life and godliness” (2Pe 1:3). In fact Paul made it clear regarding God’s provision for us in any situation, “who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1Co 10:13). We cannot deny the scriptures are complete (2Ti 3:16-17) and authoritative for any situation. Therefore, we realize God does not leave us without understanding of as to what is acceptable to God or unacceptable to God. Somewhere in the scrip- tures, through diligent study, we will find the answer to our questions. We would expect this because God is omniscient, that is, all knowing. Whatever our question regarding matters of faith, God in his omniscience has provided for us in the scriptures, an answer. Paul wrote, “for whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Rom 14:23). Therefore, to do in matters of faith what does not come from God’s authority, that is from his written word, is a sin. Faith comes from God’s word (Rom 10:17). We can trust God’s word to explain God’s will in all matters. This is the reason Peter was able to write of the scriptures, "men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2Pe 1:21) giving authority to what we have in the Bible. It is the reason Paul was able to write, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God" (2Ti 3:16). Jesus said, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (Joh 12:48). Therefore, we realize, we develop our faith by what God has explicitly told us in his written word. It is our final authority. How then should we treat the silence of the scriptures? The scriptures inform us, “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God" (1Pe 4:11). Where the Bible is silent on a matter, that silence does not allow but instead prohibits. Will you respect the silence of the scriptures? Be careful before you answer for there is an area in which many Christians unknowingly disrespect the silence of the scriptures. *Ray Sullins*
