Suffragan Bishop Charles L. Smith, Pastor
From the Pastor’s desk. . .
Confess your faults one to another, and pray
one for another, that ye may be healed. The
effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
availeth much.
(James 5:16)
I have written this week with the Lord’s help about The
Power of Prayer. The scripture text for this article comes
from the book of James. This book is the first book of the
general epistles. There are seven general epistles,
namely James, I Peter, II Peter, I John, II John, III John,
and Jude. The general epistles are not addressed to any
particular church but all of them are written to the
believers in Jesus Christ. The book of James is a very
Jewish book and was written about AD 45 to the Christian
Jews who were scattered abroad by the dispersion of
them from the city of Jerusalem. (James 1:1) says =
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to
the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
The book of James is called “The practical” book of the
New Testament, and it is also called, “The Proverbs” of
the New Testament. The author of this book is James,
the Lord’s brother. (Galatians 1:19). He was the pastor
or overseer of the First Apostolic Church in Jerusalem.
(Acts 15:12-24). He was also called James, the just,
because of his holiness of life, and piety, and his rigid
adherence to the practical morality of the moral law.
The teachings of the author, James, about The Power of
Prayer are found in (James 5:13-18). For the study of
the entire teachings about prayer, its power, and its
effect on our lives, let us read and study it, which will
increase our Bible knowledge.
But for this Pastor’s Desk, we want to focus our attention
upon our scripture text for this article which (James 5:16-
18). It says = Confess your faults one to another, and
pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The
effectual prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias
was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he
prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not
on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the
earth brought forth her fruit. The author, James, says in
this passage of scripture that the effectual fervent prayer
of a righteous man availeth much. First of all, our
prayers that we pray to our God must be effectual fervent
prayers. The word, effectual, means = producing an
intended effect, and fervent means = passion or strong
feeling, especially of desire. Fervent also means = our
object of enthusiasm. Both of these words are adjectives.
An adjective is a word that serves as a modifier of a
noun. They change the noun of prayer and make it a
prayer that produces an intended effect.
Our prayers must all be fervent or with passion and a
strong feeling especially of desire to have them answered
by our God. We must focus upon what we want God to
do for us. Our prayers must be our object of enthusiasm.
The author, James, used as his example a man who
prayed an effectual fervent prayer. His name was Elijah,
the prophet of God in Samaria. He is first introduced in
the Old Testament scriptures in (I Kings 17:1) which says
= And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of
Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth,
before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain
these years, but according to my word. The reason why
he told Ahab this prophetic message was because God
was tired of Ahab and Jezebel’s evil and wicked ways.
They forsook the Jehovah God of Israel and served Baal
and worshipped him and killed God’s prophets and reared
up an altar for Baal in the House of Baal which Ahab built
in Samaria. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of
Israel than “all” the kings of Israel that were before him.
Read: (I Kings 16:29-33). After Elias (Elijah) left the
presence of King Ahab, he prayed an effectual fervent
prayer to the Lord that availed much. James said Elias
was a man of like passions as we are, and he prayed
earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the
earth by the space of three years and six months. The
word, earnestly, means = with a serious state of mind.
Let us look at the man, Elijah. James said that he was a
human, fleshing being just like all of us, who believed
God’s prophetic word which he had given to him, and
prayed earnestly to his God that he would confirm his
word that was given to him. The effectual fervent prayer
of this righteous man availed much. The Power of Prayer
stopped the earth from giving her dew and the heavens
from giving her rain upon the earth for three and one half
years. Saints of the most high God, read these scriptures
and see what The Power of Prayer can do. We can affect
nature with our prayers. And Elijah prayed a second
prayer that God would open the heavens and send rain
again upon the earth, and the heaven gave rain, and the
earth brought forth her fruit. Read: (I Kings 18:41-46)
The Power of Prayer opened the heavens again!
Finally, we believe that the power of prayer can be
revealed in the 21st century too! But always remember
our prayers must be effectual fervent prayers; the
persons who are praying them must be righteous before
they avail much; these prayers must be prayed earnestly
or with a serious state of mind! The Power of Prayer can
change things! Saints, don’t stop praying. Read: (Luke
18:1-8)

To my Zion Temple Church Family, Praise the Lord! Since we are not able to gather together as we normally do, I felt a need to reach out to you via the bulletin. First, I want you to know that I am praying for all of us. We believe and know that God will deliver us in his time. Second, for God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and a sound mind. II Timothy 1:7. Since God has brought us to this crisis, he is well able to bring us through it. However, we must stay close to Him and have a good relationship with him. I admonish all of us to stay focused, stay prayerful, and above all, be strong and of a good courage, and He will strengthen our hearts. He has never failed and he will not fail us. He is true to his promises, and He will do just what He said He would do. So, keep holding on to your faith, and watch God work. He will come through every time. FAITH =
