Mother’s Day and May Crowning A day to honor our Mothers!

“Bring Flowers of the Fairest...” Mother’s Day is a day to honor Mothers: Our own mothers, our Holy Mother the Church, and Mary the Mother of Jesus and a loving Mother to each of us. Although we are living in difficult times, navigating the “stay at home” order to stop the spread of the coronavirus, we must cling tight to our Catholic Faith and continue to practice the Faith in whatever circumstance we find ourselves. Today, in honoring Mary, we honor our own mothers and ultimately the creator of all mothers, God who is Father, Son, and Spirit. Mary leads us to Jesus, and like a good mother she shows us the face of God in Her goodness and in Her care for us.

O Mary, we crown Thee with blossoms today!

Queen of the Angels, Queen of our hearts and homes, Mother of the Church — and our Mother — Pray for us!

Happy and Blessed Mother’s Day to all mothers!

Dear Parish Family, Happy Mothers Day to all the mom’s of our parish! My own mother died 14 years ago, and I think of her everyday, and still miss her. I think it’s true, there is nothing like a mother’s love! Saint John Paul II’s mother died when He was a small boy, He was just eight years old. After her funeral, His father took Him to the Marian Shrine at Kalwaria, Poland. There they left a small silver "votive-heart" offering amidst the thousands left through the centuries. His dad told Him that from now on, “the Blessed Virgin would be His Mother until Jesus reunited them all in heaven!” The Pope said “at that moment, in that shrine, and in a most special way...” His love and devotion to the Blessed Mother was born. He continued by saying that the Church has been the “beneficiary” of that devotion ever since. What a good, holy, devout and loving mother John Paul II must have had that he, in the midst of sorrow, was able to turn to the Blessed Virgin Mary for consolation, because of the faith that his mother passed on to him. The words of the Saint are on the wall of the shrine... left from his last visit to His beloved Poland: I am coming to the end of my Pilgrimage, and still... Our Lady of Calvary is bringing up my soul. She has been my Mother. May She be the same for you, and wipe your tears that fall, the tears only a Mother can see... What a beautiful legacy of faith he has left us because of his own mother. Our own mothers are a gift from Him. From them we first experience love in a tangible way. In them, we see and feel the love and care of God: God who is love. Through them, we have come to know the Lord. As we celebrate Mother’s Day today, let’s do whatever we can to show love to those women in our lives who have loved us. They truly are a special gift from God. If your mother has gone home to the Lord, take comfort in the words of Saint John Paul. And remember to offer a prayer for your mother today. And of course, as we honor our own mothers today, we also honor the Blessed Virgin Mary ~ the Mother of Jesus, the Mother of the Church [who we call our Holy Mother], and the Mother of us all. The Dominican Sisters of Mary ~ Mother of the Eucharist from Ann Arbor, Michigan are joining us for the live stream Mass today and will be crowning the image of the Blessed Virgin in front of our altar. I hope you will remember to bring flowers to Mary today in your own home, and honor Her, in some way, throughout the month of May, dedicated to Her honor. Grow in your devotion to the Mother of God, who draws us closer to Her Divine Son. To Jesus, through Mary!

May the Lord Bless you, and Mary keep you in Her care. Happy Mothers Day to all our moms!

The Motherhood of Mary When Mary said "yes" to becoming the mother of God's Son, she also said "yes" to becoming our mother, since we are united with Jesus in the Mystical Body. What's more, her acceptance of this motherhood continues throughout Eternity. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: Her role in relation to the Church and to all humanity goes still further. `In a wholly singular way she cooperated

by her obedience, faith, hope and burning charity in the Savior's work of restoring supernatural life to souls. For this reason she is a mother to us in the order of grace.' This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation... Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress and Mediatrix" (Nos. 968 and 969). What a tremendous help God has given us for motherhood. Mary exemplifies virtue — acceptance, patience, trust, obedience, endurance, courage, strength, hope, faith and joy — in a completely tangible way. We can see that in the various scenes from Scripture. Gabriel's request must have seemed outrageous to her (at least initially), yet she accepted it as God's will, and then trustfully, obediently carried it out. She faced the shame of unwed motherhood and the disappointment of her betrothed. She was asked to travel a dangerous route in order to assist her elderly and miraculously pregnant cousin. She was told to embark on an uncertain journey to Egypt. Yet, she endured these situations with courage and strength. She watched as her Son was condemned, tortured and violently murdered without losing hope in God's promise. Finally, her profound faith was rewarded at the Resurrection and her joy made complete at Pentecost. Mary's life experiences are interwoven with her virtue. With Mary as model, we have a sure guide for motherhood. With Mary as our Mother, we have a sure advocate for the intercession and graces women need to be the mothers God calls them to be. (Marge Fenelon is the author of "Imitating Mary: Ten Marian Virtues for the Modern Mom" — Ave Maria Press)

I entrust all of us and the expectations, hopes and worries of the entire community of Christians to the Virgin Mother of God, who accompanied the steps of the newborn Church with her silent presence and comforted the faith of the apostles. I ask you to walk under the motherly protection of Mary, Mater Ecclesiae ["Mother of the Church"], docile and obedient to the voice of her divine Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

[Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI]

Thank You Saint Isaac Jogues Parish!

These are difficult days, to say the least! “Sheltering in place” and isolation has certainly changed the way we are practicing our Catholic Faith during this coronavirus pandemic. Nonetheless, Catholics are faithfully responding to the needs of the Church — Thanks to everyone who continues to contribute to Saint Isaac Jogues Parish with regular contributions made to the Rectory Office and through ONLINE GIVING. Consider signing up for ONLINE GIVING through our parish website: SIJ.NET — or call the Parish Office. Congratulations and THANKS to all who have given to this year’s Annual Appeal. As of May 4th, we have received 347 pledges totaling $228,853 on our target goal of $173,700. We are just 30 donors away from reaching last year’s number of donors. If you have yet to make your pledge, please do it today. Be part of the “success!” Our success not only depends on the total dollar amount pledged, but also on the number of donors to the Appeal. Through this coronavirus crisis, let’s show our solidarity with other parishioners AND with the Diocese of Joliet. Especially during this time of transition in the Diocese as Bishop Conlon retires and we look forward to the appointment of a new Bishop for the Diocese of Joliet. Let’s make for a successful Appeal in spite of the difficulties we face. 60% of the gifts we receive, over and above our target goal will be returned to the parish for our operating expenses. With Masses not being celebrated on Sunday, and Sunday Offerings down, we need regular Sunday contributions to help pay salaries and benefits for our employees, and to keep our facilities safe and in working order. Thanks so much for such a generous response to the Bishop’s Appeal, and for your care for Saint Isaac Jogues Parish. Your show of support, loyalty, love, and generosity means a great deal to the Parish and to the Diocesan Church. May God bless you abundantly for your generosity to His Church!

Thanks for your generous support!

Pope Francis Accepts Resignation of

Bishop R. Daniel Conlon as Bishop of Joliet

On Monday, May 4th, Pope Francis today announced that he has accepted the resignation of the Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon as the Bishop of Joliet and appointed

Bishop Richard E. Pates, Bishop Emeritus of Des Moines, as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese. Bishop Pates has been serving in this capacity while Bishop Conlon has been on medical leave. “On behalf of the entire diocese, I extend to Bishop Conlon heartfelt thanks for the dedicated and effective ministry that he has rendered the Diocese of Joliet during his tenure as its shepherd. We assure the bishop of our continuing prayer especially for his good health. May his retirement be a blessed time. We feel fortunate that he intends to remain with us in the diocese. We look forward to celebrating a Mass of Thanksgiving and reception in his honor soon.” Bishop Pates said. Bishop Conlon was appointed to his current post on May 17, 2011 and installed on July 14, 2011. On December 27, 2019, Pope Francis granted Bishop Conlon a medical leave of absence. Please keep the Bishop in your prayers. And, pray for the entire Diocese of Joliet, including our priests and religious, and Pope Francis as we move forward in this time of transition and the Holy Father appoints a new Bishop for us.

Virtual Rosary Traditionally, the month of May has been dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and our Mother. At Saint Isaac Jogues parish, we always honor Mary in a special way during this month…but we will be doing it differently this year. On Monday evening, May 11th at 7:00 pm, please join us for a virtual rosary to honor Mary and ask her to intercede with her Son for all our needs…especially an end to the coronavirus pandemic. The rosary prayer service will be live streamed to your home via Facebook or the parish website www.sij.net. Please join us as a parish family to honor Mary and ask for her intercession!

A Mother’s Love

God must have known there would be times we’d need a gentle touch, a tender,

understanding heart to love us very much.

God must have known we’d need someone to listen to our cares,

to comfort and remember us.

In loving thoughts and prayers, so in boundless wisdom, God sent us from above

the dearest blessing in the world — a mother’s precious love.

The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built a grand Cathedral. She need not, she has built something more magnificent than any Cathedral — a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body... The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God allows women to join forces with Him in performing this act of creation... What on God’s good earth is more glorious that this: to be a mother?

[Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty, 1892-1975]

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE UPDATE AS OF MAY 5, 2020 As your new Executive Director of Development, I am glad to share with you what I have been working on for the past three months. It has been a very busy time for me and the coronavirus pandemic has not stopped me from doing my job and then some! Even though I did work from home for a few days, I quickly realized that it was very safe for me to work from my office at the rectory. We have all been practicing social distancing and making sure to keep ourselves safe and healthy. I realize the impact this virus has had and will continue to have on our daily lives both personally and economically. I also understand that times are tough for many families and individuals who are struggling both emotionally and financially. I know that our faith will carry us through this difficult time and hope and pray that we all soon will be back to church worshiping and singing Gods praises. Below is a recap of the projects I have been working on and continue to do so daily: STREAMLINING THE MASS It has been an honor for me to be able to take the lead on streaming the Mass and Holy Week Liturgies via Facebook and our parish website. I have had several individuals who have helped me with the technology and I am grateful for their assistance. I want to thank the lectors who volunteered to read at the liturgies, it was a pleasure working with them. I also want to recognize and thank Fr. De Salvo for inviting Fr. Michael Lane, Pastor from Church of St. Jude in Joliet and Fr. Bob Noesen, Pastor from Assumption of the Blessed Mary parish in Coal City and Immaculate Conception Parish in Braidwood to celebrate Mass with him on Sundays and during Holy Week. PROMOTING CONTINUED FINANCIAL SUPPORTOF THE PARISH DURING THE PANDEMIC During this pandemic we have not been able to come to Mass on a regular basis and this has had a significant impact on our parish weekly income. I have worked on writing and sending two e-mail letters from the parish staff and lay leaders to address this issue. It is my hope that your email address is registered and up to date with the rectory office so that you are receiving important email information from the parish. If you have not signed up yet, I want to once again encourage online giving. This very fast and easy way to give allows you to make donations, payments, and pledges via your smart device or computer to our church. The pandemic has changed the way we shop! Many of us shop at Amazon.com and we are working on establishing an account with AmazonSmile.com that will create a revenue source for our parish. We will promote this opportunity once we have everything in place, please stay tuned. CALLING PARISHIONERS I have been calling our parishioners to thank them for their continued support and check on their well-being. I have had several very nice conversations and also left many messages.

PLANNED GIVING I am working on the establishment of the “Saint Isaac Jogues Heritage of Faith Legacy Society.” I am currently working on a brochure that will be mailed out with a letter announcing the Legacy Society and encouraging parishioners to become charter members and indicate that they are willing to leave a legacy gift in their estate plans to the parish. My hope is that our planned gifts will create a very nice fund that will help sustain the church through difficult times. MET WITH THE FOLLOWING GROUPS During my fist month I was able to meet with the following groups/individuals to help introduce me to key leaders and individuals that I will work together with on the Capital Campaign:

Parish Council Finance Committee School Commission Parish Staff School Leadership Staff

GRANT RESEARCH We are very blessed to have several local families and organizations that offer funding grants. I have been and will continue to research them and be prepared to submit a request for funding for our Capital Campaign at the appropriate time. CAPTIAL CAMPAIGN PREPERATION The Capital Campaign is my most important responsibility and the main reason I was hired. The coronavirus pandemic has caused me to be very careful as to how I proceed keeping in mind the struggles many families are currently having. I am very compassionate and respectful of these issues and will take a cautious approach moving forward. I have been working on preparing for an eventual Capital Campaign we just need to work out the timing. The funds that I will raise in the future will be crucial to the future of the school. The safety and health of our students are top priorities and we must raise the resources needed to install the sprinkler system and a new HAVAC system. As the shelter in place restrictions begin to ease up, I will begin having meetings and planning sessions with the appropriate lay leaders of the parish to begin moving forward with this campaign. I have begun working on the planning of a video to help market and promote our school campaign. It will include testimonials from School Leadership Staff, Students, Alumni Teachers and Parents. SIJ SCHOOL ALUMNI REUNION It is my hope that we will have an all school class alumni reunion this fall. The event will depend on what social distancing rules will be in place. I would like to have it in conjunction with our Feastival in October in honor of St. Isaac Jogues. For those alumni who are older or live out of town we will be looking into a virtual reunion for them where they can participate from their homes. If you are an alumni of Saint Isaac Jogues School and would like to take a leadership role in helping coordinate you class reunion, please contact me at [email protected] or by calling me at 630.655.5523.
