One Lenten devotion remains: Our 5th way of the cross
is 5:30 Wednesday at SS P/P & Thursday at St. M, (a
Lenten meal following each). There’s been a question or
2 about a curious statement of Jesus in last week’s devo-
tional: “If they do these things in the green wood, what
will happen in the dry?” This was only recorded by St.
Luke, during Christ’s meeting the women of Jerusalem
during the way of the cross—the so-called 8th station of
the cross (Luke 23:27-32). The Jerome Biblical Commen-
tary says this sounds like a proverb Jesus is repeating.
What is sure is the message: “If innocence (Jesus; ‘green
wood’) meets such a fate, what will be in store for the
guilty Jerusalem (dry wood—which burns more readily
than green!)?”
St. Patrick’s Day, March 17: a holyday of obligation for
some but a feast day for all of us. In honor: The “Celtic
Cross” originated with St. Patrick himself. It’s not as
widely known as the clover story—whose 3 leaves he
used to explain the Trinity, but like it in the way he used
natural things & native things to explain Christian things.
Since the time of the apostles, missionaries have adapted
the symbols of native people to explain Christian
concepts. The Evangelist of Ireland created the Celtic
cross using the pagan Irish symbol for their
Sun God or God of Fire. St. Patrick
superimposed the circular symbol on
the Christian cross & explained that it
represented eternity with the one, true
God, no beginning & no end. Thus the
Irish began to venerate the cross in droves &
have carried it everywhere they’ve gone
over the past 16 centuries.
Our annual Catholic Ministries Appeal began just 4
weeks ago. So far:
SS PP: 36 (12.4%) have given $5,245 (30.3%) of goal.
St M: 14 (14.3%) have given $1,825 (30.0%) of goal.
Diocesan-wide, we’re at 41.6% of our $2.1 million goal.
(The goals this year are SS P/P: $17,300 & St M: $6,090)
For each year’s Appeal it is highly recommended that
we include a local parish project, so that any $ given over
our parish goal is retained by the parish & used for that
project. One of the reasons for that recommendation is
that any of that over-&-above $ that is designated for that
local parish project is not subject to “diocesan
assessment” as most other income is. (If we locally raised
funds for that same project, apart from the Catholic
Ministries Appeal, it would be subject to diocesan
assessment so we could not use for that project all of the
$ given for it. (Either way, any $ given over the parish
goal is returned to the parish.)
That local project at SS P/P is automatic door openers
costing $2,000 for the rectory door & $5,475 for the car-
port door (wiring, material, installation) & at St. M
includes several lighting/wiring improvements in church,
upstairs & down, totaling about $3,000.
