What Is A Living Will? A Living Will goes into effect if a person falls into a condi-tion where recovery is almost impossible. It is a set of written instructions stating an individuals' desire not to be kept alive through the use of medical technolo-gy when that individual is in a terminal condition and incapable of giving informed consent or refusal for further treatment. It also appoints someone to make such deci-sions on that person’s behalf. A Living Will is one of the most important estate preser-vation techniques available to the average person. Nu-merous studies have shown that a large portion of all health care costs in the U.S. are incurred in the last few days of a person’s life. Many families are forced to spend substantial amounts of income and savings in order to medically prolong the lives of their loved ones for a few days. Consider completing a Living Will and file a copy with your physician and a family mem-ber.

Jesus

“Thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:21

Because the Lord Jesus was a person, He had His own individual name. His mother, His disciples, and all His friends called Him by this name, Jesus. But they probably thought little of what that name meant. And the majority of Christians today hardly know what a treasure is contained in that name, Jesus: “He shall save His people from their sins.” Many think of His death on the cross or of His work in heaven as our Intercessor, but they do not realize that Jesus is a living person in heaven who thinks of us each day and longs to reveal Himself. He desires us to bring Him our love and adoration each day.

Christians pray to Christ to save them from their sins, but they know very little how the blessed work is done. The living Christ reveals Himself to us, and through the power of His love, the love of sin is expelled. It is through personal fellowship with Him that Jesus saves us from our sins. I must come as an individual, with my heart and all the sin that is in it, to Jesus as an almighty personal Savior in whom God’s holiness dwells. And as He and I commune to-gether in the expression of mutual love and desire, by the work of His Holy Spirit in my heart, His love will expel and conquer all the sin. O Christian, you will find the secret of happiness and holiness in fellowship with Jesus each day. Your heart will long for the hour of prayer as the best hour of the day. As you learn to take time to be alone with Him each day, you will experi-ence His presence, enabling you to love Him, to serve Him, and to walk in His ways throughout the day. Through this unbroken fellowship, you will learn the secret of the power of a truly godly life.

January 02, 1965 Martin Luther King, Jr. calls for non-violent protests if Alabama Blacks are not allowed to register and vote.

Voting Rights for African Americans

A terrible and bloody Civil War freed enslaved Americans. The fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution (1868) granted African Americans the rights of citizenship. However, this did not always translate into the ability to vote. Black vot-ers were systematically turned away from state polling places. To combat this prob-lem, Congress passed the Fifteenth Amend-ment in 1870. It says: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. Yet states still found ways to circumvent the Constitution and prevent blacks from voting. Poll taxes, literacy test, fraud and intimidation all turned African Americans away from the polls. Until the Supreme Court struck it down in 1915, many states used the “grandfather clause” to keep descents of slaves out of elections. The clause said you could not vote unless your grandfather had voted—an impossibility for most people whose ancestors were slaves. Many brave and impassioned Americans protested, marched, were arrested and even died working toward voting equality. In 1963 and 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. brought hundreds of black people to the courthouse in Selma, Alabama to register. When they were turned away, Dr. King organized and led protests that finally turned the tide of American political opinion. In 1964, the Twenty-fourth Amendment prohibited the use of poll taxes. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act directed the Attorney General to enforce the right to vote for African Americans. The 1965 Voting Rights Act created a significant change in the status of African Americans throughout the South. The Voting Rights Act prohibited the states from using literacy tests and other methods of excluding African American voting. Prior to this, only an estimated twenty-three percent (23%) of voting-age blacks were registered nationally, but by 1969 the number had jumped to sixty-one percent (61%).

THAT’S EVERYTHING! I remember watching an older couple as they walked through the local Salvation Army thrift store. I had just dropped off a bag of clothes and a few other items we no longer wanted. When I get the opportunity, I stop by just to look through the old records, yes, I called them records. Not CD’s, or MP3’s, simply records, those round plastic things from ancient times that had music recorded on them.

Anyway, this couple moved slowly around me in search of items they had on a list they held tightly in hand. They didn’t say much, but occasionally motioned to the other and held an item up next to the list. “No, that’s not good,” one would say and move on. My curiosity always gets the best of me, that is until I satisfy it by asking.

“Can I help you find something?” I asked. They stopped, looked at me and said, “We’re looking for old things that look new.” It must have been a private joke, they laughed, I didn’t. “Look, every new year in the past, we tried to begin the year with new things. It was a goal to surround ourselves with things fresh and new so that we had new direction, new hopes and dreams for the year ahead,” the man said.

“How did that work out?” I asked. “It took a long time for us to learn and a great deal of debt, but we discovered it really got us nowhere,” she said. “So, how does this fit in? I mean shopping at a thrift store? Are things bad financially?” “No, not at all. We discovered that things don’t have to be expensive to be of great value. Even though it’s old, it’s new to someone who never saw it before,” he said. “So, we search each year end for things of value to no one but mean the world to us.” she added.

“May I see your list?” I asked. It was an old tattered piece of paper with three words written on it. “This is it?” I asked. I flipped it over to see if there was something I was missing. “Yep! But don’t ask if that is it. That’s not just it, that’s everything.” she said. What have you found so far?” I asked. He stretched out his hand and in it were two things. A small frame made out of Popsicle sticks and what appeared to be a knitted baby bootie. Not a pair.

“We still need one more thing,” he said. “Got it!” we heard off in the distance. “What did you find?” he shouted across the store. She walked slowly toward us holding something in the air. “Look, it’s a flower vase. Well, it was one of those Ball canning jars that someone painted. It looks awful, but…”then in unison…”It’s new to us!” They then headed to the checkout without saying another word.

There you have it. Your New Year message for 2019. “What?” Oh, yes. You might want to know what the three words were on their list. It won’t make much sense to you. You must understand that this was all just a game for them. They could have picked out anything, anything at all.

The real point here is that they had spent most of their lives believing that there was power in “things.” They spent most of their lives believing that at the stroke of midnight as one year ended and a new one began, that life was going to change magically. They like most of us, believed that we had to have a plan and we needed to sacrifice all of our waking hours and sometimes even our moral values to get ahead. Because that’s what it’s all about on New Year’s Eve. Dump the old and start stealing time from the new. The truth is, as they discovered, there really isn’t anything different from one day to the next, one year to the next, except for your attitude toward it and what you choose to do with it. Everything, including change is there waiting to be discovered.

So everything is old until you see it for the first time. There is only one thing constant, never changing and sure. That’s what those three words were on that paper. “GOD LOVES YOU!” As the woman said to me, “That’s not just it, that’s everything.” “I wish you enough!”

Mt. Zion Makes a Remarkable Impression in the Salvation Army Kettle Collection

This is the second year Zion has participated in the Salvation Army Red Kettle Christmas Collection and each time we exceeded our expectations.

Funds collected enable the Organization to: Provide holiday assistance to needy families Distribute gifts, toys, food to needy children and seniors.

On December 15th, representatives from four (4) Ministries: Evangelism, Lay, Sons of

Allen and Social Action “manned” the Kettle at Publix of 34th Street South. Customers were greeted with smiles, caroling and taped music. Funds generated for the day was more than any other site in St. Petersburg!!

In fact, the Coordinator advised the amount raised was the highest for the entire Christmas Season. The amount raised was seven hundred and five dollars ($705)!

I would like to thank the following persons for their cooperation and perseverance in this worthy Community project:
