Reflections from my Rocking Chair

Dear friends,

I usually take note of the day and place when I first see Christmas decorations for sale. This year it was October 28, 2017 as CVS. I feel like Paul Revere, “commercial Christmas is coming”, “commercial Christmas is coming”. It is coming to crush Advent- a four-week liturgical season- that whets our appetite, our joy at the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ. I imagine myself on a horse riding behind Paul Revere saying, “Remember the first commandment”: I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange gods before me. Let me be a “first responder” on behalf of Advent.

HOPE is the theme of the first week of Advent. It

begins on Sunday with the Lord urging all of us to be watchful and alert for his coming. When the Lord comes he does so with a desire to heal. Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit for the faith he finds in the childlike. Blessed are the eyes who see the world through the eyes of Christ. He who listens to Christ is building his faith like a house on solid rock. Faith will not disappoint. The lowly will find joy in the Lord. At a word from Christ the tyrant will be no more and the arrogant will go away.

PEACE is the theme of the second week in Advent.

John the Baptist understands that peace begins with repentance. Jesus heals our spiritual paralysis. As he forgives sins and heals the cripple all were astonished. Jesus is the shepherd who finds the sheep that goes astray. He rejoices as a sinner is restored to him. To the spiritually thirsty he turns the desert into springs of water. All of this happens despite our unwillingness to listen.

JOY is the theme of the third week in Advent.

Jesus clothes us with the robe of salvation, like a bride bedecked with her jewels. Tax collectors and sinners are welcome into his company. He will separate the wheat from the chaff and gather the wheat into his barn (heaven). Only the stubborn are beyond God’s reach by their choice. Jesus cures many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he gives sight to the blind. There is no reason to fear. “For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

LOVE is the theme of the fourth week in Advent.

“God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son to be our Savior”. This is the profound work of God by the power of the Holy Spirit. “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuelle, which means “God is with us.”

Can there be a more joyful announcement? If you keep the spirit of the advent season, the

message angels sang to the shepherds “with great joy” will touch your heart as well.

Be on guard against “commercial Christmas”! The attack normally begins, “No interest until 2019”.

Blessings, Monsignor Owens

Fr. Tom Heron’s Weekly Reflection

The Gospel parable today makes a strong point about the need for bold action in response to God=s many gifts to us. Each one gets his commission according to his capacity. There is no escaping the fact that we have our gifts and freedom. God expects us to use them or we shall suffer. But God doesn=t wait for us to respond on our own initiative. God=s love is forever empowering us to respond -to take new risks in loving others. God asks us to gamble on loving. He encourages us to take the risk of loving. He tells us that He works within the situation to bring new life. The defense of the timid servant is quite correct from the standpoint of fear and immaturity. He projects his own rigidity on everybody including God. He is like the little boy in this grandmother story C Come to dinner? No, responds the little boy. Why? pleads the grandmother. Your past experience has been a pleasant and good one, hasn=t it? Yes, but for some unexplained reason the little grandchild is now afraid of the dark and decides to sit home and misses out on a wonderful opportunity. As adults, we sometimes reach a point in our relationship where love calls for honesty, for compassion, for growth. But we are afraid to be frank, fearful that telling the truth or reaching out in love will make stomachs turn and tempers flare. Better to leave well enough alone. He or she will only get upset. But the Lord is persistent. He says we really have no defense for our fear. Our sin is that we fail to co-create. We repress our talent and allow it to lie dormant. It degenerates into dead men=s bones, poisoning our entire life, chasing us into outer darkness and causing us to weep and gnash our teeth. In all this, God gives us the courage to speak and to act. He shows us that love isn=t love unless we give it away. The Eucharist is a time for exchanging gifts. The Father=s gift is Jesus and the unconditional love that Jesus brings to our broken lives and shattered world. Our gift to the Father is our courage to cooperate with His Son. Always sufficient, in most cases abundant, Grace is poured out when we follow the example of His Son, Jesus, and are guided by the Holy Spirit. Let us praise the Father at this liturgy for His boundless love and let us pray for courage to abandon our fears and find new ways to love one another. The Master distributes silver pieces to some of his servants, according to each person=s ability. In other words, each one had enough to use but not too much

to squander or to be overwhelmed. The Master expects that each person who has received this gift will be creative and industrious in how he or she uses it. The Master goes away for a while but when he returns, he brings reasonable expectations that each servant would have used the gift to the best possible advantage. What it comes down to is this: the Master wants the servants to grab hold of their lives and live life fully. The silver pieces were for them to try their wings, to use their strengths, to give themselves over to something worthwhile. Two of the servants did a lot with the silver pieces they were given. One did not. This timid servant hid his silver pieces. Why? His excuse was that he was afraid of the Master. He was timid, paralyzed by fear. He didn=t set his hand to the plow and move forward. He did nothing with his life or talent (silver piece) and was the poorer for it. What=s worse is that his friends and family and neighbors were poorer also because they never knew or enjoyed or shared in his unrealized life. The parable of course is addressed to all of us. God expects us to use the silver pieces that have been given to us. God expects that we will use our talents creatively and industriously. It takes nerve and risk and strength of character to do this. At this liturgy we pray for the grace to respond creatively and resourcefully to the gifts and talents that God has given us.
