Good News…..

Where does food come from? In an effort to teach our children that food didn’t come from grocery stores, my husband and I helped them plant tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans in our back yard. The yield was small, but the reward was great as they tasted the work of their hands. We had somewhat more difficulty explaining the source of our protein, though they did learn how to fish. We cooked what they caught. I think they grew in appreciation of the hard work it took to put food on the table. We also learned the importance of sharing what we had by cooking for others and collecting canned goods for our local pantry. The Israelites in the desert wondered where food was going to come from as well. The desert they wan-dered through was a far cry from Egypt. They forgot their enslavement and remembered only the food that they had, which seemed like a banquet compared to what the desert provided. There was nothing to plant and no place to plant it. The Israelites had to rely solely on God. God did not disappoint. First he sent quail, then a miraculous bread that was as much as they needed. It was a lesson in faith we all need to learn. As city dwellers, we have grown to rely on the farmers, butchers, and fisherman who supply our daily food. As Christians, we again must rely solely on God for our spiritual nourishment. He sent us his Son, Jesus, who is the true bread from heaven. If we come to him, we will never hunger.

Good News….. August 9, 2015 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (B)

I have a clear memory of leaning over to the classmate in the next row and complaining about an assignment we had just been given. I wasn’t the only one. Throughout the classroom, pairs of heads came together in a wave of rolling eyes and muttered remarks. I suppose we thought it went unnoticed. “Is there anything you would like to share with the rest of the class?” the teacher asked. “No, thank you,” was the general response. We were a little embarrassed at having been found out. That long-ago recollection surfaced as I read that the crowd “murmured” when Jesus said that he was the bread that came down from heaven. The word is also used of the Israelites who “murmured” about their hunger in the desert. Jesus calls them out by answering the question they thought he didn’t hear. When he explains that he is greater than the manna that kept them alive in the desert, they can’t believe their ears. They couldn’t see that Jesus was far more than they understood him to be and they did not have faith in him because of that. Has there ever been a time when you have murmured to yourself or someone else about God? Maybe God called you to ministry and you didn’t believe him. Maybe he asked you to give up something and you complained like I did in that class of years past. Maybe you think God has been unfair to you. Save you breath; God hears you. In-stead, go to him. “Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not.” Exodus 16:4 When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, the surplus became wormy and

rotten. In the same way today, God calls us to be content with a fair portion and to be willing to share

the rest.

Pastoral Care Ministry brings comfort through visiting of the sick and elderly, those in distress and

all persons in need. The committee assists the pastor in fulfilling the needs of those who are suffering.

The services are provided by teams of volunteers; these volunteers have an ability to show

compassion and loving concern for people in the context of our Christian faith.

St. Vincent de Paul Pastoral Care Team takes Communion to those who are sick at home or in the hospital. Some

of the members provide a Lay Service at care homes, and some provide assistance in transporting care home

residents to Masses and Communion services that are scheduled weekly, biweekly and monthly.

A new schedule will soon be made for Pastoral Care. If you would like to share your time & talents with this

ministry please call the office by August 17th, 2015.

Pope Francis’ recent Encyclical, “On Care for Our Common Home”, focuses early on the example of St. Francis of Assisi

who is greatly loved among Catholics but also by non-Christians for his deep concern for all God’s creation and also for the

poor and outcast. “As a mystic and a pilgrim who lived in simplicity and in wonderful harmony with God, with others, with

nature and with himself, St. Francis shows just inseparable the bond between concern for nature, justice for the poor, com-

mitment to society, and interior peace.” So attuned to the wonder of God’s creation, St. Francis was fond of addressing all

that exists in creation with the endearment of ‘brother’ or ‘sister’, and thus, his approach was one awe and wonder, fraternity

and beauty in everything, manifesting “a refusal to turn reality into an object simply to be used and controlled” [10-11]. Ever

faithful to the Scriptures, St. Francis saw nature as a magnificent book in which God speaks to us and grants us a glimpse of

His infinite beauty and goodness, as these passages indicate: “Through the greatness and the beauty of creatures one comes

to know by analogy their Maker” (Wisdom 13:5); as indeed “His eternal power and divinity have been made known through

His works since the creation of the world” (Romans 1:20). [12] In many respects, this echoes the account of creation in

Genesis, where at the conclusion of each, God looked upon what He had created and saw that it was good. This goodness

and beauty of what God creates is affected and marred by human sin, but it is not totally lost or obliterated, rather it is retained

and needs to be fostered in our activities with all that exists as St. Paul writes, “creation still retains the hope of being freed,

like us, from its slavery to decadence, to enjoy the same freedom and glory as the children of God” (Romans 8:21). Far being

pessimistic and disillusioned, Pope Francis appeals to the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral

development, for “the Creator does not abandon us; He never forsakes His loving plan or repents of having created us.

Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home”[13]. Cautioning against obstructionist atti-

tudes, ranging from denial of the problem to indifference, nonchalant resignation or blind confidence in technical solutions,

Pope Francis acknowledges that “regrettably, many efforts to seek concrete solutions to the environmental crisis have proved

ineffective, not only because of powerful opposition but also because of a more general lack of interest” [14]. Far from just

isolated problems such as the availability of clean water, the effects of prolonged drought in certain regions, the long-term

effects of chemical residues on the land, etc, Pope Francis encourages to see the big picture, not just parts of the issues. {To be continued…}
