“But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her.

Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.”

He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” (Matt. 15: 23-25)

* * * * *

JESUS RESPONDS TO FAITH NOT PLEADING History will help us understand the readings for this week…..

The grandson of Abraham (from Isaac) was Jacob. When Jacob wrestles with the Angel of God all night he is renamed “Israel”. This is where the nation we call Israel comes from. Jacob had 12 sons that became the famous “12 tribes of Israel”. In our Gospel, Jesus says: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

The “Lost house of Israel” is actually 10 tribes descended from Jacob. Only the remainder of the tribes of Joseph and Judah comprised the Jew-ish people of the New Testament.

These tribes, or sons of Abraham, were lost because they were deported around the Kingdom Assyria in 722 BC and intermarried with the native Assyrians to lose the faith in the One God of Abraham.

Well, OK – that’s the historical background to what Jesus says about seeking the “Lost Sheep of Israel.” When Jesus lived only the descen-dants of two of those tribes returned after the fall of Assyria in 610 BC: the descendants of the Tribes of Joseph (the Israelites) and Judah (the Jews). Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea and raised in Nazareth of Galilee, just North of Samaria.

So, Jesus is a Jew who grew up in a land of “non-Jews”, or Israel-ites!

The woman that pleads for Jesus to exorcise her daughter is from an area below Judea, near Arabia (today), Canaan. They are non-Jews as well.

Jesus may have intended to help her but, needed to remain Jewish in order to save the lost Jews. So, Jesus responds to those of faith!

Remember Jesus scolds the Apostles for their little faith and then is ap-proached by non-Jews that show greater faith than His disciples.

The moral of all this history is to show how Jesus is merciful and accept-ing of all people, even those thought to be outside the faith.

Jesus is our example! Mercy and acceptance of all people is the way to save the lost!

We need to accept the person not the sins of others.

We need to accept the prayer not the blasphemy of others.

We need to accept the hope not the condemnation of others.

We need to be Christ-like not judge and jury towards others. We need to give witness of, not preach, the faith. Jesus will respond to our prayers and actions done with faith in Him. We show our faith in our deeds. Our lifestyle must give witness to a lov-ing and forgiving God that sent His Son to redeem and save all people!

May our Divine Savior bless you, -Fr. Pat
