Girl Scouts of St. Paul of the Cross will be selling their favorite cookies outside of church after all the Masses next weekend Feb. 29-Mar 1.

Varieties available include the traditional Thin Mints, Trefoils, Samoas,

Tagalong, Do-Si-Dos, Toffee-tastic, Girl Scout S’mores and a new cookie Lemon-ups.

Each box is $5.00. Proceeds go to each troop to help defray costs of activities, such as camping, and badge work, and necessary supplies. Folks wishing to support our Girl Scouts may also contribute to Gift of Caring, a Girl

Scout program that provides cookies to men and women in the armed forces and their families and to community organizations at no cost to them.

Dear St Paul of the Cross Parishioners, As the Season of Lent approaches, I feel spiritually energized. This time of the year gives me the motivation to dedicate myself a little more seriously to my spiritual life. The ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday remind us of Christ’s call to repentance as expressed in the words said during their imposition: “Turn away from sin and

believe in the Gospel!” Borrowing the words of Paul we can say, “Lent is the acceptable time, a time of grace.” As we begin this holy season I would like to invite the whole parish to embark on a journey of conversion and spiritual renewal. In the Early Church the Lenten season was originally the period when catechumens preparing for baptism intensified their preparation. This was a powerful time when they sought to enter more deeply into Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection (The Paschal Mystery). Eventually the whole Church joined the catechumens on their journey not merely as spectators but as participants. All Christians undertook certain practices in order to be ready for a worthy celebration of Easter. The three pillars on which the edifice of Lenten observance rests are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In this column I would like to dwell a little on the first pillar, namely, prayer. Some people tend to think that prayer is about technique and strategy. I believe that prayer is all about relationship. In our significant relationships we cannot draw closer to those we love if we do not spend much time with them. In the same way we cannot draw closer to God if we do not spend significant amounts of time with the Lord. During this season I would like to encourage all of us to set aside time for prayer, both communal and personal. I am fully aware that your lives are very busy. I am proposing a few ways we all can nurture our prayer life. Each of us can choose to do what we can within our resources. First of all, let us try to find time for personal prayer. For some of us turning to Scripture would be the way to go. Others may use their prayer time in quiet meditation. Some of us like to make a personal retreat during this time. We can also nurture our spirits by delving deeper into our understanding of our faith. This Lent our parish offers us a six-part Lenten series on “What Catholics believe.” In this parish we have the great possibility of praying before the Blessed Sacrament day or night. I strongly urge families and individuals to spend some time in the Adoration Chapel on a regular basis. Secondly, I would like to encourage us to celebrate the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. If we can, let us attend Mass on a weekday. It certainly will call for special effort and sacrifice. I know that most of us cannot make it to daily Mass. The weekday Mass offers the possibility for silence and prayer in a subdued environment. I know many of us go to confession on a regular basis. For those who do not, Lent is a suitable time to approach the sacrament and experience God’s forgiveness once again. The parish communal penance service with opportunity for individual confession will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 31st, at 7:30 pm. Third, it will be good for all of us to engage in some devotion centered on the passion of Christ. The season of Lent has traditionally been a time to contemplate the suffering and the death of the Lord through the practice of the Stations of the Cross. In our parish we will have Stations every Friday at 7:30 pm. I encourage all to consider taking time off your busy schedule to pray the Way of the Cross on any Friday you can. You can also pray the Stations on your own when the church is open. If you cannot do it in the time scheduled in the parish, perhaps you can prayerfully read the account of Jesus’ last hours as recounted by one of the gospels. Finally, I would like to encourage all the households in the parish to engage in some form of family prayer during Lent. I know many of you pray before meals. Why not consider doing something special during Lent? Perhaps we can read the Sunday readings or daily readings, and share our reflections with each other. Maybe we can recite the rosary together. I hope we will find some way to be together in family prayer. I know for sure that we are very good at praying together as a community during our Sunday Eucharist. I also know that our participation in communal prayer needs to be nourished and strengthened by our personal prayer. The Lord Who spent enormous amount of time serving the crowds retired regularly into the desert to be alone with the Father. Even as we continue to celebrate the Eucharist as a community, let us find the time to commune with the Lord in private. May this Lent enable us to grow in our life of prayer! Let us pray for the parish that this Lent will be a time of grace and renewal. God love you! Yours warmly,

The Church’s fasting laws are as follows:

Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age, but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two

smaller meals are permitted if neces-sary to maintain strength, but eat-ing solid foods between meals is not permitted.

The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

By the threefold discipline of fast-ing, almsgiving & prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should under-take serious practice of these three traditions.

Fasting means not eating between meals.

Abstinence means eating no meat or fowl.

LENT AND THE CHAPEL---- AIDS TO OUR SALVATION

This week, on Ash Wednesday, we observe the beginning of Lent. We will spend the next forty days living with Jesus as He approaches His Passion and Death. It is a time of fasting, almsgiving and prayer. The suffering of Jesus may be ugly and offensive to see, but it is the most beautiful action that displays the love of Our Father for His erring children. We should ask ourselves, “What more can I do for Our Lord? How can I make amends for my sins and the sins of the world? How can I capture the suffering Jesus did to give me the happiness of knowing that my salvation is now available to me? What must I do in my life to live this blessing He gave to me? Lent is a catalyst that helps us to match what we know we should do with the spiritual energy that enables us to do what we know we must do to seek an eternity with Jesus. During Lent, our secular lifestyle and pursuits may be interrupted. However, we are “being spoken to,” and God is telling us that our Salvation comes in two parts. First, the suffering and death of Jesus opens heaven for us. Second, however, to attain salvation, it is necessary for us to spiritually pursue it through the good works and conduct of our lives and doing God’s Will. In the Chapel, we find the support of Jesus in the Real Presence to help us be prepared to greet Our Savior on Easter morning in willing faith and a capturing love.

First Communion & Confirmation, we invite you to consider joining the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

Program at St. Paul of the Cross Parish to help you learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment.

The RCIA sessions also provide opportunities for you to ask the questions you may have about the Catholic Church. You will be able to learn what the Catholic

Church believes, teaches and proclaims to be revealed by God.

HELPING JESUS DURING HIS PASSION AND DEATH

During Lent, we strive to be with Jesus as we observe His Passion and Death

which provided for us our Salvation. We try to be close to Him through some extra spiritual effort.

One way, of doing this is to consider covering an hour of Adoration in our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel one day a week and covering the same hour during each week of Lent. For Committed Adorers, this would mean signing up for an additional hour. For others, sign up for a particular hour that you will cover in the Adoration Chapel for Jesus each week during Lent.

Such an effort from one’s heart would be a true Lenten prayer of love, adoration and atonement for one’s sins and a plea for blessings and increasing our relationship with our Savior who suffered much.

FOOLISHNESS Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings. We begin with Leviticus and the

admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of

course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being

practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolish-

ness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19). This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no re-

sistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as

your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48).

ASH WEDNESDAY Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, prescribed by Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, along with strict in-structions not to flaunt them in public to win recognition and praise (Matthew 6:1-18), have been embraced by all the saints at the beginning of every Lent for almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many react with a grimace or slight shud-der—even now, years after official obligations have been re-duced to a minimum! No wonder the Eastern Rite’s “Lenten Announcement” sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! The Lenten Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from passions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accomplishing them in love!” Saint John Chrysostom, whose feast is September 13, elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor person, take pity. An enemy, be reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent!

first distribution day of the new year and is in particular need of the following:

PLEASE NOTE that no canned vegetables of any kind are needed at this time.

Donations can be dropped at the rectory, in the collection chests near church entrances,
