CURRENT ISSUES OF CONCERN TO CATHOLICS

LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO THE PEOPLE OF GOD

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — “No effort must be spared” to prevent future cases of clerical sexual abuse and “to prevent the possibility of their being covered up,” Pope Francis said in a letter addressed “to the people of God.” “I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse, the abuse of power and the abuse of conscience perpetrated by a significant number of clerics and consecrated per-sons,” the pope wrote in the letter dated and released Aug. 20. The letter was published less than a week after the release of a Pennsylvania grand jury report on decades of clerical sexual abuse and cover-ups in six dioceses. The report spoke of credible allegations against 301 priests in cases involving more than 1,000 children. ” Pope Francis said. “But their outcry was more powerful than all the measures meant to silence them.” “The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain,” he said, “and so it is urgent that we once more reaffirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and of vulnerable adults.”

The complete text of Pope Francis’ letter is available on our parish website:

www.Stanthonyoceanside.org In his letter, Pope Francis insisted all Catholics must be involved in the effort to accompany victims, to strengthen safeguard-ing measures and to end a culture where abuse is covered up. While the letter called all Catholics to prayer and fasting, it does not change any current policies or offer specific new norms. It did, however, insist that “clericalism” has been a key part of the problem and said the involvement of the laity will be crucial to addressing the crime and scandal. Change, he said, will require “the active participation of all the mem-bers of God’s people.” “Many communities where sexual abuse and the abuse of power and conscience have occurred,” he said, are groups where there has been an effort to “reduce the people of God to small elites.” “Clericalism, whether fostered by priests themselves or by lay per-sons, leads to a split in the ecclesial body that supports and helps to perpetuate many of the evils that we are condemning today,” Pope Francis said. “To say ‘no’ to abuse is to say an emphatic ‘no’ to all forms of clericalism.” In his letter, Pope Francis acknowledged the church’s failure. “With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial com-munity that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives,” he wrote.

“We showed no cared for the little ones,” Pope Francis said. “We abandoned them.” “Looking back to the past, no effort to beg pardon and to seek to repair the harm done will ever be sufficient,” he said. “Looking ahead to the future, no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated.” Recognizing the safeguarding policies that have been adopted in vari-ous parts of the world as well as pledges of “zero tolerance” for abu-sive clerics, Pope Francis also acknowledged that “we have delayed in applying these actions and sanctions that are so necessary, yet I am confident that they will help to guarantee a greater culture of care in the present and future.” As members of the church, he said, all Catholics should “beg forgive-ness for our own sins and the sins of others.” Pope Francis also asked Catholics to pray and to fast so that they would be able to hear “the hushed pain” of abuse survivors. He called for “a fasting that can make us hunger and thirst for justice and impel us to walk in the truth, supporting all the judicial measures that may be necessary. A fasting that shakes us up and leads us to be committed in truth and charity with all men and women of good will, and with society in general, to combating all forms of the abuse of power, sexual abuse and the abuse of conscience.” In Washington, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said by opening his letter with these words of St. Paul, “If one part suffers, all parts suffer with it’,” Pope Francis “shows that he is writing to all of us as a pastor, a pastor who knows how deeply sin destroys lives.” In a statement issued late Aug. 20, Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston responded in particular to these words from the pope: “Penance and prayer will help us to open our eyes and our hearts to other people’s sufferings and to overcome the thirst for power and possessions that are so often the root of those evils.” “These words must provoke action — especially by the bishops,” Cardinal DiNardo said. “We bishops need to — and we must — practice with all humility such prayer and penance.” The pope is inviting “all the faithful” to “join in prayer and fasting as a way to help foster conversion and genuine change of life wherever it is needed, even in the shepherds of the church. Cardinal DiNardo said he too, extends that invitation to all Catholics. Jesus’ own words about the power of prayer and fasting, the cardinal said, is “a humble reminder that such acts of faith can move mountains and can even bring about true healing and conversion.”

“On behalf of my brother bishops, I offer that only by confronting our own failure in the face of crimes against those we are charged to protect can the church resurrect a culture of life where the culture of death has prevailed,” he added.

A summary of Pope Francis’ “Letter to the People of God” this week is published below. Responses and reactions by Bishop John O. Barres and Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo appear on the next page

CURRENT ISSUES OF CONCERN TO CATHOLICS

Bishop Barres’ Response to the Letter of Pope Francis

From Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop, Diocese of Rockville Centre , August 20, 2018:

“I am extremely moved by Pope Francis’ Letter to the People of God. He shows so movingly the courageous heart of a pastor con-fronting evil in the Church with courage, determination, and Good Samaritan pastoral charity and sensitivity. With all the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, I express my gratitude to Pope Francis for his Letter to the People of God. He confronts the horror, atrocity and culture of death of clergy sexual abuse and our responsibility to be instruments of the Holy Spirit to uproot it from the life of the Church. With great courage and conviction, Pope Francis summons the entire People of God in solidarity – ‘if one member suffers, all suffer together with it’ (1 Cor 12:26) – to get involved in caring for survivors, preventing future abuse, and ensuring that bishops and all leaders in the Church do what the Lord Jesus and the People of God both expect of them in eradicating these abominations against those they are ordained to serve, sanctify and even die for. Pope Francis’ call for penance, prayer, fasting and repentance is a powerful call for Church reform grounded in the Word of God, the Body and Blood of Christ, and the universal call to holiness and mission. He asks us to stand with Mary at the foot of the Cross as we experience together the agony of these wounds of the Church. She calls us to ‘insist more upon prayer’ and seek ‘to grow all the more in love and fidelity to the Church.’”

President of U.S. Bishops' Conference and Committee Chairman Response to Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report August 14, 2018 -- Washington, DC In response to today's Pennsylvania grand jury report, Cardinal Daniel N. Di-Nardo joins Bishop Timothy L. Doherty of Lafayette in Indiana, in issuing the following joint statement. Bishop Doherty is Chairman for the USCCB's Com-mittee for the Protection of Children and Young People.

The full statement follows: "The report of the Pennsylvania grand jury again illustrates the pain of those who have been victims of the crime of sexual abuse by indi-vidual members of our clergy, and by those who shielded abusers and so facilitated an evil that continued for years or even decades.

We are grateful for the courage of the people who aided the investi-gation by sharing their personal stories of abuse. As a body of bish-ops, we are shamed by and sorry for the sins and omissions by Catholic priests and Catholic bishops.

We are profoundly saddened each time we hear about the harm caused as a result of abuse, at the hands of a clergyman of any rank. The USCCB Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People and the office of the Secretariat of Child and Youth Protec-tion will continue to offer avenues to healing for those who have been abused. We are committed to work in determined ways so that such abuse cannot happen.

The Pennsylvania grand jury report covers a span of more than 70 years. In 2002 the U.S. Catholic bishops adopted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, which commits us to re-spond promptly and compassionately to victims, report the abuse of minors, remove offenders and take ongoing action to prevent abuse. This Charter was revised and updated in 2011 and again in 2018. We pledge to maintain transparency and to provide for the permanent removal of offenders from ministry and to maintain safe environ-ments for everyone.

All policies and procedures regarding training and background check requirements are made publicly available by dioceses and eparchies.

We pray that all survivors of sexual abuse find healing, comfort and strength in God's loving presence as the Church pledges to continue to restore trust through accompaniment, communion, accountability and justice."

THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL IN THE PARISH OF ST. ANTHONY

WHAT IS SVDP? The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is a group of lay parishioners (men and women) called Vincentians. An essential precept of our work is to provide help while scrupulously maintaining the privacy and dignity of those who are served. Pairs of Vincentians visit families in their homes to listen and assess their needs. Not everyone can be assisted, but we listen and try. Our help is restricted to St. Anthony parishioners and Oceanside residents. Most of our families are working at low wages and somehow managing, but unforeseen events such major illness, loss of hours or family problems leave them in need.

Need, not creed, determines who is helped and how. HOW DO YOU HELP?

♦ First and foremost, with your prayers! ♦ With your donations to the Poor Box, monthly envelope

contributions and bequests

♦ With In Lieu of Flowers memorials for loved ones ♦ With donations and participation to support the “Walk for

the Friends of the Poor” ♦ With donations of used clothing to the SVdP clothing bins

(99% of the clothing collected will be worn by someone.)

HOW DOES SVDP HELP? ♦ By careful ly l i s tening to their concerns, we as-

sess their needs and help when possible .

♦ By providing emergency and temporary financial help for partial rent and mortgage payments, utilities, fuel oil, medicine, furniture, bedding and more.

♦ By supplementing items in the Parish Outreach Food Pan-try through direct purchase of food at reduced prices.

This Weekend! K of C Benefit Event for Al Larsen

Sunday, August 26 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

O’Connell Gardens Knights of Columbus

2985 Kenneth Place, Oceanside NY 11572 Many St. Anthony’s parishioners know that our great friend and Brother Knight, Al Larsen, has been courageously battling major health problems since March. The very good news is that Al has made huge strides, but there is still a long path ahead.

Please keep Al and his wife, Madge, in your prayers. There is a major need, though, to renovate the house that they have called home for a half century so that they can continue to be part of the Oceanside and St. Anthony’s community they love and have given so much to. A ramp is needed, and a first-floor bathroom added, plus other modifications. These are costly but necessary projects.

Al’s Brother Knights of Fr. O’Connell Council have come together in to form a benefit program to help defray the costs of construction. And, we invite all St. Anthony’s parishioners to join us to help Madge and Al who have helped so many in our parish and community.

There are three ways that you can help:

1. Attend the benefit for Al on Sunday, August 26. $30 per person. Food by Chef Steve Pasetti.

2. Participate in our raffle. Tickets are $100. Grand Prize is $10,000. Five Second Prizes of $1,000 each Drawing will be at the Benefit. Note: Raffle ticket purchasers will receive FREE admission to the Benefit.

3. Contribute directly. Make your check payable to “Al Larsen”. Mail to: Kevin Griffin, 2958 Harvey Avenue, Oceanside, NY 11572.

For more information, email [email protected] or call 516.678.1237

St. Anthony’s Preschool re-opens the week of September 10th.

There are a limited number of openings available for children in the 2018-2019 school year. For information about our pre-school programs, please call 516-764-0048 / Extension 2520.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL Labor Day is an opportunity to take stock of the ways workers are honored and respected. As Pope Francis points out, "Work is fundamental to the dignity of a person. . . . It gives one the ability to maintain oneself, one's family, to contribute to the growth of one's own nation." For many people, especially for the poor, who may be unemployed or underemployed, the struggle to support their families is a daily battle. Your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal directly supports the programs and ser-vices that assist families and individuals struggling in our com-munities.

All funds raised support the Appeal, its Ministries and St. Anthony’s Parish

We ask you to join the 445 St. Anthony’s families who have donated to the Appeal this year . You’ll be making an important difference in someone’s life. Thank you!

If you have not yet pledged to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, please consider making a pledge today. 80% of your gift will be returned to St. Anthony’s. Return your pledge with this form to St. Anthony’s Parish Center , 110 Anchor Avenue, Oceanside, NY 11572
