Prayer of Invocation/Confession

God of Power, who brings forth life

out of the grave and who destroys

death, show us Your power today

that we may live again. You who

raised Jesus, revive Your church. You

who raised Jesus, come again to

renew Your creation. Merciful God, as

we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus,

send Your Holy Spirit to tear away

the bars that imprison us in sin, evil

and death. Fill us with the power of

the resurrected Christ so that we may

be His faithful disciples in life, in

death and in life beyond death. In the

name of Him who is the resurrection

and the life, Jesus Christ our Lord, we

pray. Amen.

The stone that the builders rejected has

become the chief cornerstone. This is the

Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

God has raised Jesus from the grave.

Alleluia! Jesus Christ is risen today.

Alleluia!

Leader: Have you heard the Good News? Jesus is not dead! Jesus is

alive!

People: Passing through betrayal and sorrow, through death and

defeat, came Easter/Resurrection morning. Jesus is alive.

Leader: Jesus lives on this Easter/Resurrection day!

People: Christ the Lord is alive!

Leader: Everything is different! This Easter/Resurrection morning we

see life bursting through death and defeat.

People: Jesus is Alive! The Risen Christ is among us. Jesus is Alive!

Leader: Let us sing praise to the Living God, who was, and is, and

shall be forever more.

People: Because Jesus is alive, we are Easter/Resurrected people, and

we can celebrate. The Resurrection of Jesus has changed our

whole lives.

Leader: We have hope and joy and new life, and we can celebrate. We

can celebrate Jesus!

People: So from this day on we proclaim, we celebrate, we rejoice,

because Jesus lives!

All: We are Easter/Resurrection people. Hallelujah. Jesus Christ

is Risen! He is Risen indeed!

OFFERTORY PRAYER

Almighty God, we rejoice in our Risen

Savior. On this day of joy and gladness,

make our hearts thankful for every

measure of Your grace. Let Christ Jesus,

vanquish, renew in us faith everlasting.

Heavenly Father, through our tithes,

mission gifts and sacrificial offerings,

brought to You today, we dedicate

ourselves to the service of the Living

Lord. Amen.

"For if the willingness is there, the gift

is acceptable according to what one has,

not according to what one does not

Bookstore. Also, we have new journals and a new selection of boxed cards. Our

Bookstore is be open Wednesdays before Bible Study and Sundays

The Gospel of Matthew tells us there were two resurrections. The first one,

the one we celebrate every year, happens in the background. There is no

description of the moment when Jesus was raised. Jesus' Resurrection isn't

even described... it is simply reported. The Gospel of Matthew focuses

instead on the Resurrection that happens in those two women who came to

the tomb and their faith and life is restored. They put aside their fear, their

grief, their sense of loss and picked up and spread the world-shaking news

that Jesus has been raised. Alleluia!

Grief Tool Box April 2015

Spring is the time for outdoor activities like gardening, admiring amazing insects, long

walks, or just enjoying family and friends. This month as we transition into warmer

weather we can share some delightful short stories with our children, grandchildren,

nieces, and nephews.

Included in this month’s tool box are some helpful books for children and adults. Feel free

to couple them with your own unique circumstance, a favorite scripture, or life lesson you

want children to practice when questions, doubts, and sadness arise.

Suggested reading:

Water bugs and Dragon Flies, Explaining Death to Young Children, by Doris Stickney Looking for a meaningful way to explain to neighborhood children the death of a five-year-old friend, Doris Stickney adapted the graceful fable about the water bug that changed into a dragonfly. A Child’s View of Grief, A Guide for Parents, Teachers, and Counselors, by Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D. Wolfelt answers these questions:

What should you say to kids when someone they love dies? Should young children attend funerals? How might a grieving child act?

Why is the grief teenagers experience especially complicated?

How can caring adults best help children and adolescents with their grief?

Scripture “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV

Prayer Dear Lord, teach me to be attentive to the needs of my family. I want to tell them the ways you have shown your love for me. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

A Brief History of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church

In 1924 a few officers and members of Mount Beulah, banded together and organized a church

which they named Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Two ministers worked together in the

organization of the church. This small faithful group of people purchased a lot at 20470

Wisconsin in Detroit. More people moved into the area, joined Mount Lebanon Baptist Church

and the name was changed to First Baptist Church.

Reverend Smith served as Pastor until 1929. Reverend Theodore Williams served from 1931

until 1935. The church called Reverend Pyles who served about three years and rebuilt First

Baptist. He was unable to finish rebuilding the church because God called him from labor to

reward. Reverend Sandy Gibson, who was the assistant to Reverend Pyles, carried out his

term and was elected for a short period in 1939.

Reverend Charles B. Heath was called as pastor in the spring of 1939. Much was accomplished

under Reverend Heath’s administration. Due to the fact that there were two churches in Detroit

with the same name, Reverend Heath had the church change its name from First Baptist to

New Prospect Baptist Church on January 7, 1945.

In 1953 the church voted to enlarge their present building. The members were supportive of

this effort and contributed considerably. In March 1960, the members borrowed ten thousand

dollars and made the down payment to purchase the 6330 Pembroke building. Reverend Heath

pastored the church for twenty eight (28) years until his death in 1967.

In February 1968, the church called Reverend Dr. S. Leon Whitney from Jackson, Mississippi.

Under his pastoral leadership an addition to the Pembroke Property was made and the facilities

were expanded to its current structure. There was much growth under Reverend Whitney until

his death in December 1990. His son, Reverend Dr. Keith L. Whitney assumed the pastoral

leadership from 1991 until 1996. Reverend Randolph F. Henlon who was the Assistant Pastor

at the time served as Interim Pastor from 1996 until March 1999.

On March 1, 1999, history was made in Detroit. Reverend Wilma Robena Johnson, a female

assistant pastor at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, was elected Senior Pastor of New

Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. A new light appeared in the community.

THIS IS THE CHURCH WHERE THE SPIRIT OF UNITY ABIDES.

THIS IS THE CHURCH WHERE THE VISION LIVES AND SHINES!
