SAFFRON WALDEN MUSIC FESTIVAL NOVEMBER 2021
__________________________________________________________________________________
It has been a tough year for music but we’re back! This will be the ninth Saffron Walden Music
Festival and we are very grateful to the Saffron Walden Rotary Club for their continued sponsorship
of this event. After so long, having this wonderful platform for our talented young people to play and
perform makes the Festival more important than ever. The timing of this year’s Festival means that
the overall instrumental winner, plus the winner from the Vocal Section, should have the
opportunity to go forward into the Rotary Club Young Musician competition in 2022, which is
extremely exciting! We look forward to two days of amazing music, culminating in our Finale Concert
in the magnificent Saffron Hall.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
__________________________________________________________________________________
The Festival will take place over two days – Sunday 14th and Saturday 20th November – and will
comprise six Sections with an adjudicator for each one. Our adjudicators are all professional
musicians who will listen to the performances and give feedback to the young musicians. All the
young musicians taking part will be given written feedback and a certificate: there will also be
medals awarded for exceptional or very promising performances. There are six Sections – Vocal,
Guitar and Brass will take place on Sunday 14th and Piano, Woodwind and Strings on Saturday 20th.
Each Section has various classes from Pre-Grade 1 to advanced level and the winner of the Challenge
Cup Class in each section (Grades 7 to 8) will receive an individual trophy. The adjudicators will select
an overall winner from each Section to go through to the Finale Concert. To celebrate the
importance of playing together, there are ensemble classes in all Sections and the adjudicators will
give feedback on these.
THE FINALE CONCERT
__________________________________________________________________________________
The Festival culminates in the celebratory Finale Concert, which will be held in Saffron Hall on
Saturday, 20th November at 6pm. The six Section finalists will perform in a Young Musician of the
Year style concert to decide the overall Festival winner. Our concert adjudicators will be Jane
Patterson, Philip Sunderland and Sue Dorey. This year, while the adjudicators retire to make their
decision, we hope to showcase some of the most promising performances from the Junior sections.
SAFFRON WALDEN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
__________________________________________________________________________________
Saffron Walden County High School is hugely excited once again to be hosting the Saffron Walden
Music Festival. SWCHS has a well-deserved reputation for musical excellence. Over 300 students
receive instrumental tuition and there are many different ensembles. Students are given numerous
opportunities to perform in termly concerts or as part of a more informal programme of lunchtime
recitals. We are also extremely proud of our successful Music Academy Programme, which continues
to draw in high numbers of the most talented local musicians from Essex, Cambridgeshire,
Hertfordshire and Suffolk. In recent years, the school’s musical reputation has also been enhanced
by the addition of Saffron Hall. The Hall and its programme have allowed our pupils not only to
perform in a world class concert venue but also to work together with professional musicians of the
highest standard. It is in collaboration with Saffron Hall that we have greatly enhanced singing and
string playing in the school over the last few years. In addition to this, we are proud to work in
partnership with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Saffron Hall and the Essex Music Hub to
host the Saffron Centre for Young Musicians (SCYM), a specialist Saturday school offering high
quality musical training to students aged 5 to 18.
Music is at the heart of Saffron Walden County High School and the Music Festival chimes perfectly
with the ethos of the school. Not only does it provide young people with the opportunity to compete
with each other in a friendly atmosphere but it also gives them the opportunity to learn more about
themselves as performers and how to communicate successfully with an audience. We look forward
to hearing what this year’s young musicians can achieve.

Finally, particular thanks to Saffron Walden County High School for their continued support in

SENIOR PIANO SECTION
ADJUDICATOR : JOHN YORK
Following studies in London, Paris (where he won the
International Debussy prize) and Vienna, John York’s career
has taken him all round the world, the majority of his work
being with cellist Raphael Wallfisch and York 2 piano duo.
His most recent recordings are all on Nimbus. York 2 were
recently released in their unique four-hands repertoire of
20th century ‘orchestral’ blockbusters including Le Sacre du
Printemps and The Planets.
With Raphael the catalogue grows exponentially from the
complete Beethoven cycle to the works of Schnittke and
James NacMillan, including world premieres, rarely heard
19th century works and major cello and piano masterpieces.
Before these duos became established, some 25 years ago, he had played concertos with
such orchestras as the London Mozart Players and the LPO, founded the successful York
Piano Trio and Quartet and accompanied a list of illustrious performers. He was Senior
Music Head at St Paul’s Girls’ School, a position from which he retired in 2014.
He is a composer, festival adjudicator and lecturer and has no intention of letting up on any
of these activities, even though his commitment to St Paul’s Girls’ School has come to an
end. He fully intends to develop these aspects and enjoy his grandchildren, now that he has
a little more time.
