The boy was not very bright so the old man told the boy to make sure that everything he did he would do to the best of his ability. One day the Sultan called for his hawks to be brought to him as he planned to go hunting. He was horrified to see that their wings of his priceless birds had all been mutilated. He called for the boy and for his uncle to explain what happened. The old man was terrified and tried, desperately, to distance himself from his nephew, fearful that one or both of them would have to pay with his life. When the boy was asked what he had done to the wings of the priceless birds he innocently replied that the only birds he had ever seen before were pigeons and since the wings of the Sultan’s birds did not resemble the wings of a pigeon, he had cut them and shaped them to look like pigeon’s wings. He thought he had done a pretty good job! Sometimes we try to re-fashion people or things according to what we, in our limited knowledge know. Some of us try to re-fashion God according to our own limited understanding of what we think God should be. In so doing we create a monster as we vastly underestimate and limit the greatness of God. There are things we do not understand about the Mystery of God and there are things we will never understand about that Mystery or about the Will of God and how it works itself out in our relationship with Him as life unfolds. There are moments when all we can do before the greatness of the Mystery of God is to bow our head in faith and wonder and say, “Lord, I do not understand, help my lack of understanding”! If I do not comprehend the Mystery of God I do not try to re-fashion that image of God into my own image, rather, I try to let myself to be guided by God so that I understand as much as is humanly possible to understand and the rest I accept on Faith! If I trust in God, God will not deceive me or lead me astray. However, I must never fall into the trap of trying to re-invent God according to my limited knowledge, because, then, I will only create a monster.

Fr Tony wri tes… The old courtier secured a job for his nephew at the Sultan’s court, looking after the hunting birds.
