SUITED follows its subjects—clients seeking a personalized experience—into the minimalistofficespaceofBindle&Keep,abespoketailoringcompanybasedinBrooklynthatcaterstoadiverse LGBTQcommunity and looksbeyond thegenderbinary.ClothierduoRaeandDanieltake a holistic approach to their work, considering each client’s personal narrative, whichbecomes inextricable from the creation of the perfect custom-made suit. From Derek’semotional journeyashepreparesforhiswedding,toEverett,a lawstudent inaconservativeenvironment,orMel,whosimplywantsto lookgoodfortheir40thbirthdayparty—theneedfor well-fitting garments represents deeper meaning around identity, empowerment, andfeelinggood.Goingdeeperthanfinefabricsandsilklinings,SUITEDtakesamodern,evolvedlookatgenderthrough the conduit of clothing and elucidates the private and emotional experiencesurroundingit.Withheartandoptimism,thefilmdocumentsaculturalshiftthatiscreatinganewdemand—andresponse—foreachperson’srighttogooutintotheworldwithconfidence.

SUITEDbeganonNovember27,2013.ThatwasthedayIopenedtheNewYorkTimesandreadanarticlecalled“TheMasculineMystique”byJohnLeland.Itendtoreadalotofnews,butthisparticularstoryresonatedwithmeinanunusuallypowerfulway.ThearticletalkedaboutabespoketailoringcompanynamedBindleandKeep,theirgendernon-conformingclientsandthecomplexrelationshipthatclothingcanhaveforpeopleastheylookforwaystooutwardlyexpresstheirgender.Thesuitmakingprocesswashighlypersonalandoftenpartofanimportantjourney.Themomentwhenaclienttriedonafinishedsuitsoundedbeautiful,likeitwasloadedwithemotionalweightandselfrealization.Thearticlestayedwithme.Itwastouchingformetothinkaboutanditinspiredmetomakeadocumentary.WhenthearticleintheTimeswaspublishedIhadbeentheboomoperatorontheHBOseriesGIRLSforfourseasons.Duringthattime,IdevelopedafriendshipwithexecutiveproducersLenaDunhamandJenniKonner.Imentionedtheideatotheminaninformalwayandsuggestedadocumentary.TheywereimmediatelyinterestedandencouragedmetocontactBindle&Keeptoseeifwecouldputaprojecttogether.IemailedRaeTutera,oneofthepeoplequotedinthearticlewhoworkedforBindle&Keepandbegantogetasenseforthematerialandhowwemightcraftastory.Raewasincrediblypatientandactedasmyguideintotheworldofgender.SUITEDisastoryaboutpeople,genderandfashion—andoneclothingcompanyseekingtoredefinethoselabels.
