Petromax was added (400 ml)to the MFT (200 ml) for a totalof 600 ml to be processed.

400 ml of Petromax

Weight = 416.4 grams

MFT combined with Petromaxwas sheared for 60 secondswithin the glass jar picturedon the left.

This picture shows oil watersolids separation viewed after15 minutes.

After 15 minutes of settlingtime all three phases wereextracted and quantified.

The wet clay weighed 104.1 less 6gram paper or 98.1 grams.Assuming 12% water, as in

previous tests, the dry clay wouldweigh 86.33 grams.

Recovered MFT water and Petromax = 582.07 grams and is justover 500 ml. The extracted spent water/Petromax solution still

contains clay as it will continue to settle at the bottom. Thisrecovered water has been settling for ½ hour after extraction.

The extractedwater/Petromax

spent solution hascontinued to settle

for 5 hours.

The clay isaccumulating at the

bottom of the jar witha small amount oflight oil at the top

This fine clay at thebottom appears to

be very clean.

Observations

• The Pond One MFT contains a higher percentage of clay thanpreviously tested Syncrude tailings.

• A visual inspection of the extracted spent Petromax solutionindicates a significant amount of clay continues to settle out ofsolution over a period of 5 hours.

• The extracted oily froth (11.55 %) appears to contain very littlebitumen oil, but rather a combination of air bubbles, water, andoil.

• The water/Petromax spent solution appears to contain asignificant amount of bitumen oil and is gradually rising to thetop. It appears to be a very light oil.

The extractedwater/Petromaxsolution appears tohave stoppedsettling clay.

This picture showsthe clay level 30hours from the timeof extraction.

After thespentPetromax hasbeen pouredout you cansee some ofthe oilremains onthe interiorglass.

In addition, oil appears tohavesaturated thetop portion ofthe clay.

After scrapingthe top layer, youcan see cleanerclay below the

surface.

This clay, after 30hours, appears to bevery dry whencompared to theclay which wasremoved after 15minutes of settlingtime.

The clay is verydense and stiff.

The clay is tightlybonded to thebottom of the jar.

The clay is very dense/stiff and can be easily sculpted.

Page 26: Suncor 1A Oil Sands - Tailing Ponds - Oil Recovery - Soil Remediation - Environmental Cleanup - Suncor Pond One Test 2

The extracted wet clay weighed 55 grams less 6 gramspaper or 49 grams. Assuming 12% water, as in

previous tests, the dry clay would weigh 43.12 grams.

The spent Petromax and clayhave been removed from the jar.

The total dry clay ( 86.33 + 43.12 = 129.45 grams ) now accounts for 45.44% of the original MFT

After 12 hours fromthe second clay

extraction very littleclay has settled to the

bottom of the spentPetromax solution

and recovered water.

A very light bitumenoil continues to rise

to the top of thePetromax solution

After 84 hours fromthe second clay

extraction, clay hascontinued to settle at

the bottom of thespent Petromax

solution and recoveredwater.

It appears morebitumen has

risen to the topof the jar.
