Jazz fans in Korea have something to getexcited about as Seoul Jazz Festival 2009brings world-renowned jazz artists to the stage. For a period of four days, audiences will havethe chance to see an outstanding lineup ofsome of the best contemporary jazz has tooffer. Previous festivals featured leading lightslike Pat Metheny, Randy Crawford and Chris

Botti, and this festival, the third to date, will be presenting an even greater array of diverse interpretations. First on the stage will be Omar Sosa, whose Afro-Cuban style gives audiences a taste of the post-modern, and

the acclaimed acid jazz band Incognito, whose performance last year transformed the classical Sejong Center intoa stylish club.

On the 15th and 16th, the stage will be graced by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglové, who captured the hearts oflisteners with their award-winning soundtrack work on the popular film “Once.” Tickets for the first Korean concert oftheir teaming, The Swell Season, were sold out in two weeks in January. For those who couldn’t get to see thatconcert, this will be a good chance to appreciate their music.

The evening of the 16th will showcase the comfortable and romantic sounds of vocalists Madeleine Peyroux andWouter Hamel. Peyroux's remarkable vocal abilities will dazzle on this spring evening, while Hamel, who has count-less female fans, will be displaying his bright pop-jazz stylings.

The outstanding 10-member horn-based soul band Tower of Power will be highlighting the last day of Seoul JazzFestival. This group, going strong for over 40 years, will thrill listeners with its first Seoul performance.

As part of an effort to commemorate the 100thanniversary of Korean museums, the NationalMuseum of Korea presents “Egypt, the GreatCivilization: Pharaohs and Mummies,” a four-partexhibition of artifacts from one of the world's greatcultures.

In celebration of 100 years of Korean museums, the National Museum of Korea has been preparinga variety of exhibitions and programs to shareKorea’s culture with the world and at the same timereconsider other cultures of the world. The firstmuseum in Korean history, Jesil Museum inChanggyeonggung, was established on Nov 1,1909. One hundred years later, there are hundredsof museums in the country, and they have grownvastly in quality and quantity. This exhibition shareswith the public a brilliant ancient civilization, pre-senting an opportunity to consider the historicalmeaning of Egyptian culture, national identity, andthe roots of humanity.

The first part of the exhibition introduces thegods of ancient Egypt and the Egyptians’ views onthe afterlife. The second part deals with the livinggod, the pharaoh, an important aspect in under-standing the Egyptian cultural heritage. While thesefirst two parts of the exhibition cover absolutebeings, the third and fourth parts embrace the sto-ries of common people: relics related to the every-

day life in ancient Egypt are on display in the third part, while the fourth part presents mummies and burialgoods, providing valuable information on how the afterlife was perceived by Egyptians.

Along with the exhibition, the museum offers a wide range of programs allowing participants to experiencethe life of ancient Egyptians. Among these are various lectures delivered by well-known archaeologists fromKorea and overseas, a treasure hunt in which people try to track down items by deciphering hieroglyphics, anda drawing sessions where participants can learn about Egyptian mural paintings and try making their own.

The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts presents “King Sejong: Listen to the Sound of Heaven,” acreative Korean traditional performance featuring a modified version of the hoeryeyeon. This huge ceremonial party, tra-ditionally held at the beginning and end of the lunar year during the era of King Sejong, has been reinterpreted for mod-ern audiences to appreciate.

The hoeryeyeon originally took place at the palace court, where all military and civil officials would gather to expresstheir allegiance to the king. This performance has been reconstructed using information from “Akak Gwebeom,” a classi-cal book of Korean traditional music written in 1493, and “Sejong Sillok,” a record of events during the rule of KingSejong. The dress, rituals, dance, music and instruments of the early Joseon court have been represented based ondata from these books, providing an opportunity to witness this musical culture for the first time.

“King Sejong: Listen to the Sound of Heaven” brings to life famous figures of the time, including acclaimed musicianPark Yeon (1378—1458); Maeng Sa-seong (1360—1438), a high-ranking official and major contributor to the promotionof culture; Sin Sang (1372—1435), another high-ranking official; and, of course, King Sejong himself. All of this has beenreconfigured into a more contemporary version of the traditional hoeryeyeon, while maintaining all of the proceduresfrom the original ceremony.

Through this performance, audiences can enjoy the ceremonial music of the Joseon era while gaining a rare insightinto the ideals of the Joseon Dynasty's founding and culture.

“DRUMLine Live,” the new and exciting marching bandthat has attracted intense public attention in the UnitedStates and Japan, comes to Korea this May. Around 40African-American musicians will put on a dazzling perfor-mance at Olympic Hall in Olympic Park. This tribute to themarching band tradition of America’s Historically BlackColleges and Universities (HBCUs) will blow audiencesaway.

“DRUMLine” is the first marching band performance inthe world performed on stage. It is not just a musical con-cert, since outstanding dance and acrobatic performancesare also included. The band presents a history ofAfrican-American music from gospel to Motown music,R&B and hip hop. Classics from bands well-known for theirhorn sections like Earth, Wind and Fire and Tower ofPower, hit songs of acts like the Jackson Five and RayCharles, and catchy and rhythmical R&B and hip hopmusic will be performed, too.

There are over 100 Historically Black Colleges andUniversities in the United States — these schools werefounded after the Civil War to provide higher education tothe African-American community. One of the many tradi-tions of these historic universities is the show-style march-ing band, characterized by their high-stepping, funk dancerhythms. Like most marching bands, they began as sup-port for their school football teams, but over time, theyhave developed into a sport of their own. Wildly popular, these marching bands have grown all the more famous fol-lowing the 2002 film “Drumline.”
