TIMOTHY HUTTONThe Oscar winner for Ordinary People and former star of TV’s Leverage returns tonight for season three of the critically acclaimed ABC anthology series American Crime. Hutton, 56, plays Nicholas Coates, the owner of a North Carolina furniture company who is dealing with immigration, human trafficking and his own crum-bling marriage. What are the issues for season three? It’s about a group of people in this community in North Carolina that are going through dif-ferent, complex circumstances in their lives. But there is one common thread—the idea of domestic servitude and domestic abuse. How timely is this season? I would say very, with what’s going on in our country right now. There are plenty of examples of very difficult situations for people who come into this country looking for a job. Describe your character. He is married to Clair [Lili Taylor]. They were running the furniture company together and she leaves [the business] to spend time with their son. She brings in a French-speaking nanny from Haiti. Their story starts the day the nanny arrives. You won an Oscar at age 20 for Ordinary People. How did that feel? I was so proud to be a part of that film and work with those people [Robert Redford, Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland and Judd Hirsch]. It was an amazing experience.Your dad was actor Jim Hutton [TV’s Ellery Queen]. Did you grow up wanting to act? I certainly was not always going to be an actor. When I was a teenager, I loved to play basket-ball and baseball. I was never good enough to have a career; that’s how I spent my days.

WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...
Since Jonny Lee Miller now stars in Elementary, will he return for the Trainspotting sequel?
—Cher B., Baltimore, Md.
A: The British actor is definitely back to reprise his role as Simon “Sick Boy” Williamson in T2 Trainspotting, in theaters March 17. He’ll reunite with original cast members Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle 20 years after the original, a rollicking cult classic about a Scottish junkie trying to kick his heroin habit. Miller, 44, who’s also been starring in Elementary on CBS for the past five sea-sons, says, “The sequel’s a lot darker and a lot sadder [and] more twisted than before.”
What superstars has he worked with behind the camera? Visit Parade.com/hutton to find out.
I saw Kristen Stewart hosting Saturday Night Live and was reminded how much I liked her in Café Society. What’s next for her?
—Lois L., Radcliff, Ky.
A: Stewart, 26, is currently starring in the indie psychological thriller Personal Shopper,
written especially for her by Olivier Assayas, her director on Clouds of Sils Maria. She plays a personal shopper to the
stars who is also a spiritual medium trying to get a sign from her dead twin brother. Does she like scary movies? “I really love The Strangers, which is straight horror, or The Silence of the Lambs,” she says. “One of my top five, all-time favorite mov-ies is The Shining.”
What ever happened to Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies?
—Alexis T., Atlanta, Ga. A: Grint’s role as Harry’s friend Ron in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), the movie that kicked off the mega-franchise, also launched his acting career. Grint, now 28, reprised the role in all seven HP sequels over the next decade. Beginning March 16, you can see him as gangster Charlie Cavendish in Snatch, Crackle’s new streaming series based on the 2000 movie of the same name, about a gang of hustlers and hoods who in-tersect with a mess of mobsters and crooked cops.
Jennifer Lopez, J.Lo or Jenny From the Block—no matter what you call her, she’s got it going on as an
actress, singer, producer and entrepreneur. She has returned for season two of her NBC series Shades of Blue, Sundays at 10 p.m. ET, as NYPD detective Harlee Santos. Here are five facts about the 47-year-old native of New York City’s Bronx neighborhood.
1. When she received her first $1 million paycheck, from her 1997 movie Selena, she surprised her mother with a Cadillac.
2. Always into fitness, her nickname at the gym was “La Guitarra” because her body curved like a guitar.
3. She and 2002–2004 fiancé Ben Affleck were the Hollywood couple, aka “Bennifer,” that made mash-up names popular.
4. Lopez named her first album On the 6 after the subway train that shuttled her between her Bronx
home and Manhattan dance classes.
5. As of 2016, Lopez has released 26 fragrances—mainly for women but also one for men.

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant
I’ve heard people say they were too tired to sleep. Is that possible?
—Bob Ziegler, Minot, N.D.First, let’s make clear that you’re not referring to occasional insom-nia. Rather, you’re asking about being unusually fatigued yet unable to fall asleep. An example: Say you get up way too early one day to start cooking for a family reunion, and after the last loved one finally waves goodbye around midnight, you man-age to at least get the dishwasher filled again and take out another bag of trash before collapsing onto your bed. But then you just lie there, exhausted, staring at the ceiling and feeling a little weird! What happened? Well, you gave yourself a case of homegrown jet lag by altering your sleep-activity-meal routine so much that you disturbed your innate circadian (daily) rhythm, even though you didn’t change time zones.
Say a painter can paint a garage in a day. His friend can paint a garage in two days. Working together, how long will it take for them to paint two garages?
—Roberto Demozzi, Trento, ItalyWhat do you think, readers? And guess what: You don’t need equa-tions to solve the problem. The answer appears below.
ANSWERIt will take them 1 + 1⁄3 days. In that time, the faster painter will have painted 1 + 1⁄3 garages, and his friend, who works half as fast, will have painted 2⁄3 of a garage, which totals two garages.

The anticipation has been mounting since the project was first announced: More advance tickets for this Beauty and the Beast have been sold than for any other family film in history, according to online ticket vendor Fandango. As fans count down the days to March 17, they’ve been streaming advance soundtrack tunes, such as Ariana Grande and John Legend’s new version of the movie’s theme song. (See “New Music in the Air,” page 12.)
The 1991 Beauty and the Beast was the first animated feature to receive an Academy Award nomination for best picture. (It actually won two Oscars, for original song and original score.) That set the bar high for the new version, which was carefully reimagined to honor and expand on its predecessor.
The tale of Beauty and the Beast endures because it’s uni-versally appealing, says the new film’s Oscar-winning director, Bill Condon, 61, whose résumé includes Dreamgirls, Gods and Monsters and two movies in the Twilight franchise. “The idea of looking beyond the surface of things and finding the beauty underneath is one of the film’s legacies,” he says.
For Stevens, 34, who was Downton Abbey’s Matthew Crawley, the process of retell-ing a well-known, centuries-old tale—and embodying the Beast—was magical.
“It’s an alchemical process,” he says. “The original was a landmark film that contains a lot of the big questions about our identities, who we are, what we’re afraid of and what parts of our nature we should act on. It covers big themes and it’s able to

here’s something about Beauty and the Beast and its story of true love and courage that’s made it beloved for
generations, especially since Disney brought the 1700s French fairy tale to the big screen as a sweeping animated

It covers big themes and it’s able to
Now & Then
GASTONLuke Evans plays the hand-some but shallow villager who woos Belle. The original blow-hard was voiced by Richard White, now 63, an actor and singer in New York City.
MAURICE Belle’s loving artist father is played by Kevin Kline. Maurice was originally a wacky inventor voiced by Rex Everhart, a film and musical theater actor, who died in 2000.
LeFOUJosh Gad voices Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp. Jesse Corti, now 61, the original LeFou, went on to voice the Spanish dignitary in Frozen and Mr. Manchas in Zootopia. LUMIÈRE The Prince’s French valet who becomes a gilded candelabra as a result of a spell is voiced by Ewan McGregor. Jerry Orbach (Detective Lennie Briscoe on TV’s Law & Order), who died in 2004, was the original candelabra.
THE BEAST Before Dan Stevens had the part of the once-dashing-prince-turned-beast, it was voiced by Robby Benson (left), now 61, who went on to become a professor of telecommunications at Indiana University. Now on hiatus, he’s developing a new musical, I Hear a Song!
BELLE The part played by Emma
Watson was originally voiced by former Broad-
way actress Paige O’Hara (far right), now 60, who
made her movie debut in the Disney feature. Today
she’s an actress, singer and artist who paints Belle
for Disney Fine Art.
COGSWORTHIan McKellen is the castle’s fastidious and tightly wound head butler who is transformed into a mantel clock. The stuffy character was voiced by David Ogden Stiers, now 74, the actor best known for his TV role as Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III in M*A*S*H.
MRS. POTTSEmma Thompson replaced Angela Lansbury as the castle’s housekeeper-turned-teapot with a Cockney brogue. Lansbury, now 91, is working on a new movie, Mary Poppins Returns.
MADAME DE GARDEROBEAudra McDonald voices the opera diva who becomes an enormous wardrobe, taking the place of Jo Anne Worley, now 79, a comedic actress who appeared on TV’s Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.
PLUMETTEGugu Mbatha-Raw plays the cheeky housemaid-turned-feather-duster. Fifi (the duster in the original) was voiced by Kimmy Robertson, now 62, who later played Lucy Moran in the TV series Twin Peaks.
MAESTRO CADENZAStanley Tucci plays a new character, a human-turned-harpsichord.
Prepare to be ENCHANTED all over again with the new BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
starring DAN STEVENS, EMMA WATSON and an all-star cast.

here’s something about Beauty and the Beast and its story of true love and courage that’s made it beloved for
generations, especially since Disney brought the 1700s French fairy tale to the big screen as a sweeping animated
movie musical in 1991.This week, Emma Watson and Dan Stevens star—as the Beauty
and the Beast—in a brand-new Disney version combining live actors, real settings and eye-popping computer animation.

contain some big ideas in a beautiful setting.”The film doesn’t radically depart from the animated version,
Condon says, “but it does resolve some intriguing questions left unanswered in the first. It gives you more, specifically where the Beast and Belle fall in love.”
The love story was only part of the attraction for Watson, 26.
“The original was romantic, but in a way that didn’t feel contrived the way other fairy tales sometimes are,” she says.
Besides being a love story with a feminist bent, “it’s an action movie with huge amounts of stunts, wolf-fighting, horse-riding, guns and swordfights,” Watson says. “It’s also a romantic drama. And then there’s music and dance on top of that. On the other hand, it’s a comedy too. The comic timing of characters like Cogsworth and Lumière and Mrs. Potts—it’s just hysterical.”
“I think this version might be funnier than the original because of Josh Gad and Kevin Kline,” says Gugu Mbatha-Raw, 33, who plays Plumette, the castle’s maid who becomes a feather duster. “They’re a really funny double act!”
Mbatha-Raw also admires Belle’s spirit. “I loved that she was smart and bookish and didn’t fit in with the village,” she says. “She wasn’t privileged. She knew her own mind. I thought that was cool.”
Condon believes Beauty and the Beast will always be cool. In the

An EPIC ProductionBeauty and the Beast was shot in the United Kingdom over the course of four months. The adaptation sets the story in mid-18th-century France, so every set, prop and costume is sumptuously authentic to that era. Some details:
The ballroom features 12,000 square feet of faux marble and 10 glass chandeliers modeled on actual chandeliers from Versailles.
1,500 red roses and 8,700 candles (or 104,400 inches of wax) were used as set decoration.
The enchanted forest took 15 weeks to complete. It features live trees, hedges, a frozen lake and 20,000 icicles.

end, it’s the weaving of the old and new in this beloved story that will captivate audiences, he says.
“People introduced the animated film to their own children, and the musical is
still being performed all over the world. We’ve always had Beauty and the Beast around us, but that’s also because people remain so drawn to it.”
It is, indeed, a tale as old as time.
In addition to Ariana Grande and John Legend performing the new film’s signature song,
Céline Dion (who originally performed the Grammy-winning duet “Beauty and the Beast” with Peabo Bryson in 1991) performs a new original song, “How Does a Moment Last Forever,” com-posed by Alan Menken, one of the writers of the original score.
Some of Howard Ashman’s original lyrics from the songs “Gaston” and “Beauty and the Beast” that weren’t used in 1991 have been added back. The brokenhearted Beast sings a new ballad, “Evermore,” after releas-ing Belle from the castle to rejoin her father.
Ewan McGregor (Lumière) sings the extravagant “Be Our Guest.” And Belle gets a new song too. “It’s only a verse and a little bit of a chorus, but it’s very beautiful,” Emma Watson says. “We expand a bit on Belle’s past and see the story of her life before she goes to the castle. It’s a really lovely extra detail that wasn’t in the original.”

Every night, thousands of female veterans sleep on the streets. Major Jas Boothe is on a mission to change that.
Her nonprofit organization, Final Salute, has helped more than 2,000 female vets across the country trade homelessness for a roof and a bed. It’s a cause that’s close to her heart. Twelve years ago, Boothe was homeless.
In 2005, Boothe was a platoon leader preparing to deploy to Iraq when all her belongings—then in storage in Louisiana—were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. She and her 9-year-old son lost everything. In a double whammy of bad luck, a few months later she was diagnosed with aggres-sive head, neck and throat cancer.
Unable to deploy with her unit, Boothe spent months in the
hospital undergoing treatment. After she left the hospital and was no longer on active-duty sta-tus, she went from making more than $3,000 a month with ben-
efits to $300 in food stamps and cash. The single mother and her son moved in with her aunt and slept on the couch.
“Homelessness was a mission
we were never trained for in the military,” she says.
Within a year, Boothe was back on her feet, working for the Na-tional Guard. In 2010, she founded Final Salute to provide transi-tional housing and other services for female veterans. Boothe, now back in the Reserve and cancer-free, created other programs, including Ms. Veteran America, a pageant that celebrates contes-tants’ military service while raising funds for those in need.
“We’ve been able to give hope where historically there wasn’t any,” she says. “My proudest achievement is being able to help other people.”

Sheet-pan dinners, like this smashing recipe from New York Times columnist Melissa Clark’s new book, Dinner: Changing the Game, are all the rage these days, thanks to
their one-pan-meal ease. Here, Clark elevates the chicken-and-potatoes suppertime standby with bold-flavored harissa (a North African–style chile paste you can find in many supermarkets) and cool yogurt. —Alison Ashton
Harissa Chicken With Leeks, Potatoes and Yogurt
In a large bowl, combine 1½ lb bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs and legs and 1¼ lb Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1½-inch chunks. Season with 2½ tsp kosher salt and ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper. In a small bowl, whisk together 3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, 2 Tbsp harissa and ½ tsp ground cumin. Drizzle on chicken and potatoes; toss to combine. Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Halve 2 leeks lengthwise; slice thinly. In a medium bowl, combine leeks, ½ tsp grated lemon zest, ¼ tsp salt and 1½ Tbsp olive oil.
Preheat oven to 425°F. Arrange chicken and potatoes in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet. Roast 20 minutes. Toss potatoes lightly; scatter leeks over baking sheet. Roast 15–20 minutes or until chicken is done and everything is golden and slightly crisped. In a small bowl, combine 1⁄3 cup plain yogurt, 1 grated garlic clove, ¼ tsp salt and ¼ tsp pepper. Spoon over chicken and vegetables. Scatter 1 cup mixed fresh herbs (dill, parsley, mint and/or cilantro leaves) over top. Drizzle with olive oil and fresh lemon juice. Serves 4.
