70 For over 50 years, the Sun Angel Foundation and its generous members have been providing much needed resources to Arizona State University and its student-athletes. The leadership displayed by the Sun Angel Foundation enables ASU Athletics to make gainful strides as the landscape of collegiate athletics continues to change. What has not changed in the Sun Angel mission is forging a partnership between ASU and the private sector to provide Sun Devil student-athletes with the resources necessary to become champions. Since 1947, Sun Angels have contributed over $70 million in private funding to ASU Athletics. Annual contributions from Sun Angel members are the lifeblood of ASU Athletics. Contributions from more than 7,000 members support all of the university’s 22 teams and over 500 student-athletes. Sun Angel giving supports student academic excellence and provides funding for the Intercollegiate Athletics Office of Student Academic Development comprised of scholarship support, tutorial services, compliance, post-eligibility scholars, the Freshman Year Experience and much more. The Sun Angels understand that each seat-related gift and additional contributions to the annual scholarship fund has a significant, transformational impact in the lives of our student-athletes. The support that Sun Devil athletics has received from its fans and community in the past is greatly appreciated. The Sun Angel Foundation stands ready to meet its half-century long goal of promoting excellence in both academic and athletic pro- grams while becoming the best collegiate support group in the country. To join the team, call the Sun Angels today at 480- 727-7700 or visit www.sunangelfoundation.org. SUN ANGEL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Scholarships and student service expenditures comprise one of Arizona State Athletics’ greatest investments. First and foremost, each student-athlete comes to Arizona State to earn a degree. The academic advisors, computers, books, tutors and other services offered are critical to their success in the classroom as they grow personally and athletically. Funds from private sources must be generated each year to offset the academ- ic costs of supporting over 300 scholarships and 480 student-athletes. The Sun Angel Foundation’s challenge is to increase annual giving to a level that will fund this investment while maintaining its support of the everyday costs of an athletic department. The Sun Angel Scholarship Fund presents a unique way for you to invest in ASU: create educational opportunity by donating, and then participate in your investment by cheering for your favorite student-athletes and teams as they compete through- out the year. BASEBALL FUNDRAISING

tThe ASU baseball program is very proactive andcreative in our fundraising efforts. Money raised bythe program annually is used to offset operationalexpenses not included in the program’s regularbudget. All donations to the program are used toprovide new or improve existing student-athleteresources.

ON DECK CIRCLEThe On Deck Circle, or

ODC, is considered the“baseball arm” of the SunAngel Foundation. Any annu-al contribution of $150 ormore grants a person member-ship to the ODC and the variousmembership benefits includedbased on giving level. Contributions to theODC are tax deductible and count with other SunAngel Foundation gifts to determine a donor’s annu-al benefit level.

The ODC also hosts the annual team awardsbanquet following the regular season. Money raisedat the banquet is donated back to the program andalso allows the student-athletes to have a first classevent to recognize the season’s accomplishmentsand pay tribute to our senior student-athletes.

50/50 RAFFLEA staple at home games each season, the 50/50

raffle has become a fan favorite since its inception in2002. At each home game, fans have the opportuni-ty to purchase raffle tickets. During the 7th inning

stretch, a winner is drawn and the pot is splitbetween the baseball program and a lucky indi-vidual. The raffle is approved by the ArizonaAttorney General prior to each season.

SHIRT OFF OUR BACKSAnother favorite event for Sun Devil base-ball fans is the annual “Shirt Off Our

Backs” day. Each season, the currentSun Devil baseball team will wear auniform from a previous season andallow fans the chance to win an actu-al game worn uniform. Raffle ticketsare sold several weeks preceding the

event and the winning fans get thechance to meet the player corresponding

with their winning ticket on the field afterthe game for photos and autographs.

LOCKER SPONSORSHIP

When the new baseballclubhouse was completed in2005, former baseball letter-winners were provided with aunique opportunity to spon-sor a locker and help offsetthe costs of construction. Each of the 40 player lockersand 12 staff lockers have aspace held to showcase a

plaque recognizing the baseball alum responsiblefor sponsoring the locker. Over half of the 52 lock-ers have been sponsored at this time.

FUTURE CONSTRUCTIONPlans are currently being designed to complete

the overall renovation of Winkles Field-PackardStadium at Brock Ballpark. The final phase of ren-ovations will be geared at improving overall fancomfort at games and provide areas that will galva-nize the rich tradition of Sun Devil Baseball. Alongwith various alumni tributes areas spread acrossthe facility, the renovation will include the installa-tion of green chair back seating throughout the sta-dium grandstand, press box expansion and additionof a shade canopy over the grandstand area. Earlyartist renditions are located on the previous page. Acapital campaign to secure funding for the projectwill be launched in 2007.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHTThe theme of the 2006 ASU season was youth, asfour freshmen were major contributors to the suc-cess of the squad. Add them to the talented mix ofsophomores, and the Sun Devils should have a lotsuccess over the next few years. Ike Davis led theway for the sterling freshman class, earning Pac-10Freshman of the Year honors on his way to setting anew ASU freshman record with 65 RBI. He earnedFirst Team ABCA All-West Region honors and wasjoined by fellow freshman Preston Paramore on theAll-Pac-10 First Team. Davis and Paramore also eachearned Freshman All-American status by CollegiateBaseball and Baseball America (Second Team).Freshman Brett Wallace was named to the All-Houston Regional Team and led the Sun Devils inbatting with a .371 average. Freshman Matt Hall wasas solid defensively as any Devil, playing shortstop, second and third during the year. Sophomore EricSogard had a breakout season, earning All-Americanand All-Pac-10 honors thanks to his .353 averagewith 50 RBI and nine home runs.

DOWN BUT NOT OUTSophomore shortstop Andrew Romine had a roughoff-season leading up to 2006. After a blood clotforced him to have rib removal surgery, it wasthought the 2005 Honorable Mention All-Pac-10selection would be forced to sit out the entire 2006season. But thanks to rehab and a strong determi-nation, Romine was able to make it back to the SunDevil lineup in time for the opening of Pac-10 play.He made his return memorable, as he recordedseven hits and seven RBI in his first four gamesback to be named the Pac-10 Player of the Week.Romine missed 36 games, but still managed to hit.375 and contribute to several Sun Devil victories.

MR. VERSATILITYNo one knew what to expect out of CJ Retherford, the transfer from South Mountain CC, at the begin-ning at the season. By the end of the year, theyexpected the unexpected from the versatile junior.Retherford played five different positions for theSun Devils in 2006, including second base, shortstop, third base, catcher and pitcher. He hit .305with three home runs, including two againstArizona on May 2nd. He also pulled a rare feat in theNCAA Tournament, as he caught and pitched in thesame inning of a game against Prairie View A&M.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUEMajor League Baseballcreated the Arizona FallLeague in 1992 to serveas an off-season “grad-uate school” for topprospects. The AFL oftenis known as a showcaseleague because its play-ers have the opportunity

to display their skills for baseball scouts, general man-agers, and minor-league farm directors. For baseballfans, it’s a 40-day Valley homestand featuring base-ball’s elite prospects.

Longtime baseball executive and Valley residentRoland Hemond is considered the “Architect of the Fall

League.” His dream to create a six-week off-seasonleague from baseball’s top prospects in Arizona each fallbecame a reality when the Arizona Fall League began planin 1992 after two years of selling the concept to base-ball’s hierarchy — first general managers, the owners.

Major League Baseball owns and operates theArizona Fall League. Each major-league organization isrequired to provide seven players to the league eachfall, while games are played at the Valley’s outstandingspring-training stadiums.

Arizona State University has had twenty-two for-mer players participate in the prestigious Arizona FallLeague since its inception in 1992. Former Sun DevilsJeff Pentland and Pat Listach have also managed in theAFL.

The All-Star Futures Game debuted atFenway Park in 1999 and has growninto the marquee showcase for the toptalent in minor league baseball. Playedeach summer at the site of the Major

League Baseball All-Star Game, the Futures Game provides 50 ofthe best minor league players in the world a venue to display theirtalents for baseball fans and executives alike. The rosters areselected by Major League Baseball and Baseball America in con-junction with the 30 major league clubs. In eight short years, theFutures Game has already producedover 140 players to Major LeagueBaseball — and the list will only con-tinue to grow.

In July of 2006, Travis Buckbecame the first player from ASU toever play in this prestigious show-case. Buck was selected for the gameafter getting off to one of the hottestfirst-halves in all of minor leaguebaseball as a member of the OaklandA’s AA affiliate, the MidlandRockhounds.

THE PROFESSIONAL DRAFT

nNo school has played a bigger role in Major LeagueBaseball’s amateur free agent draft than ArizonaState University.

Since the inception of the draft in 1965, ASUhas had more playerschosen (344), morefirst-round selections(22) and more No. 1picks (3) than any otherschool in the nation.

During the PatMurphy era (1995-P), 90players have been select-ed during the draft, aver-aging nearly eight play-ers per draft since Murphy took over the program.

A modern-record 12 players were selected inthe 2003 draft, most among all college baseballprograms in the nation. The number of draft picksfrom ASU do not even reflect the recruited playerswho were drafted out of high school.

That’s a marvelous testimony to Arizona State’sreputation among major league scouts and topbaseball executives. It also makes quite a state-ment about the school’s tradition and its amazing

consistency.In 1990 and most

recently in 2003, the staff ofBaseball America compiled apair of books on the historyof the draft, complete withtrends, lists and features, along with the names (all45,000 of them) of everyplayer drafted since ‘65.

Naturally, Arizona Stateand its alumni received plenty of coverage in the pub-lication. The information on this page was taken fromthat book, The Baseball Draft: The First 25 Years.

Not surprisingly, the first player ever draftedwas from ASU — Rick Monday, who went toCharles O. Finley and the Kansas City A’s as the No.

1 overall pick in 1965.Names like Jackson, Bane,

Bannister, Horner, Bonds and Kelly— just to name a few — have pro-duced their own fascinating draftstories. Without question, manymore will follow.

Here’s a sampling of news, notes and numbers, as they relateto the Devils and the Draft:

• A total of 344 Arizona Stateplayers have been drafted since theinception of the MLB Draft in 1965.No other school comes even closeto that number.

• The Sun Devils’ three No. 1overall picks were Rick Monday(1965 to Kansas City), FloydBannister (1976 to Houston) andBob Horner (1978 to Atlanta). Noother school has more than oneNo. 1 selection. Mike Kelly narrow-ly missed joining this elite club, ashe was chosen second by theAtlanta Braves in 1991.

• In 1976, Arizona State had arecord 13 players drafted. Theyincluded Bannister, Horner, KenLandreaux, Ken Phelps, Chris Bandoand Ricky Peters. Of the 27 players onthe roster, 26 were drafted at somepoint in their careers. A whopping 13of them would eventually reach thebig leagues. Baseball America says “itmay have been the greatest collectionof college talent ever assembled.”

• Only 19 drafted players have ever gone direct-ly to the major leagues. Two were Sun Devils: Banein ‘73 and Horner in ‘78.

• Louie Medina, who played at Arizona State in1984 and ‘85, was drafted a total of seven times, beginning in 1981. That makes him one of six playerswho share the all-time lead for number of selections.

• Here’s an impressive partial list of players whooriginally signed national letters of intent withArizona State but never made it to the Tempe cam-pus, instead opting for the draft’s signing bonus:Jim Palmer, Dontrelle Willis, Andrew Good, DaleMurphy, Robin Yount, Lee Mazzilli, Billy Hatcher,Jeff Burroughs, Warren Cromartie, Gary Templeton,Rick Sutcliffe, Ryan Klesko, Kerry Woodsen, LennyDykstra, Johnny LeMaster, J.D. Durbin, DuaneWard, Mike Jones, Prince Fielder, Dale Sveum, PaulKonerko, Ben Petrick and Jimmy Rollins.

• The Sun Devils added another first round selec-tion in 2005 when Travis Buck went to the OaklandA’s with the 36th pick in the first round. He is the22nd Sun Devil to be selected in the first round.

Since 1995, Arizona State has had 90 players selectedduring the annual June First-Year Player Draft. ASU is thetop collegiate program in the nation for producing anaverage of nearly eight draft picks a year since the incep-tion of the draft in 1965. In addition, since Murphy tookover the program in 1995, 36 of the 90 drafted playershad never been drafted out of high school or junior col-lege and all but two players improved their draft status.Under the two circumstances (pitchers Phill Lowery and

Mike Esposito) in which a player fell in the draft, an arminjury had occurred during their college career. However, despite being selected in the 12th round of the 2002draft, Esposito demonstrated that he had fully recoveredfrom elbow surgery and signed for second-round money($750,000). Another interesting fact is that ten playershave gone from being previously undrafted to beingselected in the Top 10 rounds. Five more Sun Devils wereselected in the 2006 draft — all five in the Top 10 rounds.

The Sun Devilswere hungryentering the 1965season after mak-ing their firstCollege World

Series appearance the previous year.Though they made an early exit with twolosses in three games in 1964, their jour-ney to Omaha, Nebraska, had given thema taste of the good life.

There was no stopping Coach BobbyWinkles’ team in ‘65. They stormedthrough the regular season with a 47-7record, won the Western AthleticConference title at 9-3 and swept two

games from Colorado State in theDistrict 7 playoffs in Phoenix to earnanother trip to Omaha sporting a No.-1national ranking from CollegiateBaseball.

Slugging center fielder Rick Mondaywas the backbone of that team. He bat-ted .359 with a school-record 11 homeruns and became the first of 13 SunDevils to be named National Player of theYear. He was the first player chosen (bythe Kansas City Athletics) in MajorLeague Baseball’s initial amateur draft.John Pavlik (12-0), Jim Merrick (13-2)and Ron Lea (11-3) headed the pitchingstaff.

ASU VS. TEXAS—JUNE 13Longhorn freshman pitcher Burt Hooten limited ASU to only three hits in this 4-0 ASUloss. A third-inning single by Terry Brenner, a fifth-inning single by Roger Detter and asixth-inning single by Ralph Dick were the only Sun Devil offensive efforts. Sun Devilstarter Larry Gura was still suffering the effects from a battle with the flu, and surren-dered 10 hits before exiting in the seventh inning. Jim Crawford and Ken Hansen werethe A-State relievers.

ASU VS. MASSACHUSETTS—JUNE 17Freshman pitcher Craig Swan won this one for the Devils, as ASU took a 4-2 win.Massachusetts had only five hits off Swan in six and two-thirds innings. Arizona Statewon the game by virtue of a big fifth inning, with five hits during that frame that pow-ered all four ASU runs. The big hits in that inning were Roger Detter’s RBI triple to leftcenter, and Ralph Dick’s single that sent Detter on to score. John Dolinsek and Paul RayPowell then each hammered triples to drive in the other Sun Devil runs. Larry Gurarelieved Swan in the seventh with two outs and runners at first and second, but quelledthat potential rally in short order.

Ken Hansen started for the Devils and gaveway to Larry Gura in the fifth inning, and Gura came from the bullpen for the second timein as many games to record the win. Home runs by Paul Ray Powell (sixth, one on) andJohn Dolinsek (eighth, none on), as well as a pair of RBI each for Billy Cotton and JeffOsborn were the keys in the A-State hitting attack. ASU VS. TULSA—JUNE 20A 10-1 victory over Tulsa brought ASU its third NCAA national championship in fiveyears, as the pitching of Larry Gura and the strong hitting of virtually the entire lineuppowered the win. Gura allowed only six hits, struck out 10 and did not issue a walk, while the Devils kept Tulsa pitching busy by banging out 11 hits. Billy Cotton and JohnDolinsek, voted the tourney’s outstanding player, both slammed home runs. Cotton’sblast was a three-run shot in the fifth, while Dolinsek’s was good for a pair of runs in thefollowing frame. Gura’s victory was his second of the tournament, as he concluded theyear with a 19-2 record. ASU’s Paul Ray Powell had three hits in the championship gameto boost his season total to 89 base hits—good for an NCAA record at that time.

The 1977 SunDevils were adetermined bunchafter compiling a65-10 overallrecord and 17-1

WAC mark in 1976 but falling short intheir quest for the school’s fourth nation-al title. Their 1977 record (57-12, 15-3)wasn’t quite as impressive and they weredown a bit in most statistical categories, but this time they got it right at Omaha.

Coach Jim Brock’s Devils hit theirstride in mid April, rolling up 19 consec-utive victories in a streak that continuedinto the post season. They swept BYU in

the WAC playoffs and stormed through aNCAA Regional tournament in Tempewith one victory over Cal State Fullertonand two over Washington State, taking aNo. 1 national ranking into the CollegeWorld Series.

Though they lacked the dominantpitching of some earlier ASU clubs, theDevils bludgeoned opponents with anattack that featured the likes of BobHorner, Hubie Brooks, Chris Bando, DaveHudgens and Jamie Allen. Horner wonvirtually every major college baseballaward after leading the nation in hits(102), home runs (22), RBI (87) and totalbases (191).

ASU VS. SOUTH CAROLINA—JUNE 16An electrifying relief pitching performance by Jamie Allen and some clutch hitting earnedASU a 6-2 win over South Carolina. A walk to Allen forced in one Devil run in the fifth, andBob Horner followed with a two-run single. Allen came on in the seventh to relieve ASUstarter Mitch Dean, and Allen’s antics on the mound became one of the Series’ highlights.Allen captivated the crowd by jumping high into the air after each strike pitched, while aball would produce a crouch or a lengthy glare at the opposing batter. Enthusiasm was thelikeliest reason for Allen’s exhibitions, but performance was the key to his superb reliefpitching. After stranding three Gamecock runners in the seventh, Allen retired the side inorder in the final two frames, with a pair of strikeouts in the eighth and one in the ninth.
