From Father David... Good Sunday to all! I have come to set the earth on fire, and
how I wish it were already blazing! What a strange desire Our Lord has
that we hear in Luke 12! What a wonderful action that Jesus is setting in
place if only we understand it. As we know if we are above a certain age,
fire is dangerous. Remember Smokey the Bear (Only you can prevent a
forest fire!)? Did your mother tell you like mine did to me, “Don’t play
with matches?” So what is Jesus getting at?
The grace of God is a fire that purifies and strengthens. How we
need the fire of the Holy Spirit here at St. Therese Parish and throughout
the world. Now is the time for Catholics to burn with love and mercy in a
harsh world. The American culture is waiting for Catholic families to
burn with the fire of God’s presence, healing for marriages, encourage-
ment for young people struggling to live faith. The Holy Spirit burns
away all the nonsense found in the constant chatter of the social media,
making room for the truth of God’s Word and voice.
A fire is dangerous, no doubt. So is the Holy Spirit. My prayer
for this week is that we will invite into our hearts this Divine Fire. May
He enflame our hearts so that our mediocrity and laziness in faith may
become white hot with the Love of the Heart of Jesus Christ. How full
would be the pews and religious education classrooms of St. Therese if
we would fan this flame. Come, Holy Spirit, enkindle the flame of Your
love in our hearts.
FR. DAVID P.S. Let me take a moment to do a “shout out” to the Lord for a wonder-
ful and successful Vacation Bible School…for the great volunteers…
parents and grandparents who brought the kids to have fun and grow their
relationship with Jesus Christ.
