GAIGE AS THE MECHROMANCER ACTION SKILL: SUMMON DEATHTRAP 66 HYPERION’S MOST WANTED To you, the phrase “science fair mishap” probably conjures up an image of, say, putting too much baking soda in a replica volcano. But no high school student on Eden-5 will forget the day Gaige’s “mechanized anti-bully deterrent” eviscerated a science fair rival who got a little shove-happy. Forced to beat a hasty retreat from the law, the young roboticist took her creation and hopped the first flight to Pandora. Gaige still remains bitter over her third place science fair finish, but luckily for her, Pandora is just the sort of place where a state-of-the-art killing machine can earn a young lady some respect. The D374-TP “Deathtrap” robot is Gaige’s pride and joy, and for good reason. This isn’t some automated turret that just sits there, or some silly bird that makes one quick pass of the battlefield; Deathtrap is an intelligent, self-sufficient killing machine that actively seeks out and murders any potential threat to its master. Its claws are its preferred mode of attack, since they can shred most foes in short order. However, it also has an electrified beam that can hit distant and aerial targets with near-perfect accuracy, making it a particularly valuable ally when dealing with swarms of flying foes. Gaige has a variety of skills that can give Deathtrap additional attacks, which enhance the damage of his shock beam and melee. Explosive Clap, which gives Deathtrap an area-of-effect explosive attack, and Robot Rampage, which turns its melee attacks into multi-hit combos, are both solid upgrades. But One Two Boom is hard to use effectively (the orb is very difficult to hit), and The Stare isn’t much better than its default ranged attack.

retreat from the law, the young roboticist took her creation and hopped the first flight to pandora.

Gaige still remains bitter over her third place science fair finish, but luckily for her, pandora is just the

sort of place where a state-of-the-art killing machine can earn a young lady some respect.

Action Skill: Summon DeAthtrAp

Once summoned, Deathtrap sticks around for 60 seconds, or until enemy attacks destroy it. The Summon Deathtrap Action Skill has a lengthy 60-second cooldown, but that can be reduced with skills and Relics. Unfortunately, there is no way to recall Deathtrap once a battle is over, so you’ll just have to wait out the clock. Since Deathtrap is so aggressive about seeking out foes (usually attacking them in order of their proximity to Gaige), it tends to attract most of the enemy fire, making it as useful on defense as it is on offense. Deathtrap is also a nice insurance policy when fighting for your life; its kills will give you a Second Wind whether you get a shot in or not.

If you’re fighting alongside Deathtrap, it’s pretty rare that your foes manage to destroy it, so you’ll usually get the full 60 seconds of support. But if you’re letting Deathtrap do all the dirty work while you hide behind cover, or you are fighting particularly difficult foes, it may expire prematurely. This can be a problem if you’re using the Upshot Robot skill to keep Deathtrap around indefinitely (Upshot Robot gives the bot five additional seconds of deployment for each enemy killed). If your plan of attack involves heavy use of Deathtrap, you’ll want to dig deep into the Best Friends Forever skill tree to protect your robot buddy with skills like Potent as a Pony, Made of Sterner Stuff, and Sharing is Caring.

there’s a part of krieg that remembers when he was sane. this part can’t ever seem to take over

krieg’s tongue, so even his most heartfelt sentiments tend to come out as deranged screams

about “nipple SAlADS!” But the inner voice of reason can control the outer voice of madness with

one simple promise, whispered between blood-soaked killing sprees: “You can kill as many of the

deserving as you like, but if you ever kill an innocent person, i will destroy us.” As addled as he is,

krieg knows it’s not an empty threat. And so he obeys, keeping his axe out of the wrong backs and

his fingers out of the wrong eye sockets… for now.

When you activate Krieg’s Buzz Axe Rampage, he draws his axe, gets a massive boost to his Speed and Melee Damage stats, and can take no actions outside of running, swinging his axe (with the right trigger), and throwing his axe (by holding the left trigger and pressing the right trigger). Most regular foes will die in a single chop, and even bosses will go down quickly if you circle around them while swinging repeatedly. The shaky camera work and high speed can make it difficult to find your targets, so keep an eye on the auto-map until you get used to it.

Each successful kill completely refills Krieg’s Health, and he’ll need it—since enemies typically attack the nearest target, Krieg can expect to meet a volley of gunfire as he rushes from meat bicycle to meat bicycle. Always plan ahead, and don’t wait to use the Buzz Axe Rampage until Krieg is at the brink of death. Officially, Buzz Axe Rampage has a two-minute cooldown, but when Krieg takes damage, the cooldown period is reduced. So in practice, the more you need it, the faster you’ll regain access to it.

The Bloodlust tree offers skills that can extend the duration of your rampage and reduce the odds of Krieg getting killed during it, but it’s the Mania tree that really makes Blood Axe Rampage shine. Early in the game, Fuel the Rampage provides significantly more cooldown reduction as Krieg takes damage, allowing you to rapidly chain one rampage into another. But it’s the tier 6 Release the Beast skill that truly unlocks its power, providing full health recovery as soon as the rampage is activated, and reducing the cooldown time to 0 if it is triggered while less than 1/3 of your Max Health remains. POUNDS! OF! FLESH! Indeed!

Legends speak of Captain Blade’s Lost Treasure of the Sands. Of a prize so great that men would turn the sands red in pursuit of it. Of a pirate

queen, courageous and deadly, who would stop at nothing to find it. Of a monstrous Leviathan. Of the Vault Hunters who journeyed to the

desert town of Oasis, not knowing the horrors that would befall them.

Round 4 is all about stalkers, so make sure you have a shock weapon and plenty of ammo for it. Take cover behind something you can move freely around, like a varkid hive, and let the Ambush Stalkers come to you (if you chase after them, they’ll just go invisible and engage you from behind). Deal as much damage with sniper rifles as you can, then move side to side behind your cover, blasting them with close-range weapons as they gather in front of your cover. They generally won’t come around to get you, and they won’t be able to get a bead on you for their projectile attacks as long as you’re moving.

The second wave introduces Spring Stalkers, which (like the bullymongs) cannot use their leaping attack thanks to the roofs over the cells. If you manage to start the round behind cover, they may not notice you at all, and you can snipe them with impunity.

The hold-your-ground strategy only works until the thresher shows up. Keep an eye on your auto-map, and when you see a cluster of red dots appear, rush in and unload with rocket launchers, grenades, and rapid-firing elemental weapons. Once the thresher burrows underground, run onto the metal platform with the switch so it won’t be able to emerge beneath you. When it does pop up again, continue your artillery barrage.

Save some heavy ammo for the King and Queen Spiderant in the final wave. Start the round behind cover so you can inflict some damage before they’re able to figure out where you are. If you’re determined to fulfill the bonus Critical Hit objective, these spiderants are your last and best chance.

The Natural Selection Annex

There’s a huge leap in difficulty here, so don’t assume Round 5 will be smooth sailing just because you soared through Round 4. The big problem is that, after five challenging waves, you’ll have to face a Badass Pyre Thresher that would be a daunting foe even if you were facing it fresh. If you’re at or below the suggested level and haven’t built your character to focus on resilience, one hit from the thresher’s Nova attack may deal enough damage to kill you outright. You may want to use your highest capacity shield here, or (better yet) any shield that has fire resistance. You’ll also want to bring a non-fire rocket launcher, preferably one that has a large magazine and fires quickly, or at least reloads quickly. Save all of your rockets for the thresher.

The first wave is all varkids, so don’t start behind cover; begin immediately pursuing them so you can shotgun-squash them before they evolve.

Sniping tactics prove effective in the second wave, which is led by elemental spiderants.

Wave 3 offers more varkids, now paired with stalkers. Starting in the southern part of the map lets you snipe out stalkers that spawn in the north while giving you a wide field of vision to spot varkid pods and pop them from long range. Try to leave one stalker alive as the last foe on the battlefield, and let it chase you around until your Action Skill, shield, and health (if you have some form of regeneration) are fully recharged for Wave 4.

Wave 4 features a thresher and a mix of skags; move to the metal platform once the thresher appears so he can’t attack from below.

There are several sub-waves within Wave 5, starting with mixed skags and spiderants. Eventually, a Badass Fire Skag and Badass Slag Skag spawn in. After you defeat both of them, ready yourself for the Badass Pyre Thresher that arrives.

The reward for your heroic efforts is a Moxxi-emblazoned rocket launcher known as the “Creamer.” It has fantastic stats, and its “non-dairy” property conceals the fact that the rockets it fires split into two. It also recovers a portion of the damage dealt as health for its user.

sanD piratEsthe dried-up seas surrounding Oasis are home to all manner of sand pirates. these ruthless bandits of the high sands rule the dunes on their portable sandskiffs and make their homes in countless encampments, many of them tucked deep within the canyons and atop the cliffs of the former ocean. sand pirates come in all shapes and sizes, from the pint-sized swabbie and Cabin Boys to the man-sized pirates and Corsairs. sand pirates are ubiquitous throughout the campaign, and what they lack in coordination and intelligence, they make up for with numbers and strength. though a unique brand of bandit, many of the sand pirate types resemble the bandit varieties you’ll encounter elsewhere on pandora, though care should be taken with the Buccaneers, Minelayers, and anchormen. these represent the heavy hitters of the lot, not unlike Goliaths (although minus the leveling up). Fortunately, sand pirates are all made of flesh and blood and are vulnerable to fire attacks. sanD Wormssand worms slither beneath the sands of Oasis and Wurmwater in an effort to detect their prey with the sensitive feelers mounted on their heads. sand worms, unlike threshers, have neither eyes nor tentacles, but they otherwise look similar. like threshers, areas containing sand worms are typically marked with signs warning you of their presence. sand worms can be killed by collision with sandskiffs. they emerge from the sands in a sudden burst and attack by biting or slapping their prey if close by; otherwise, they resort to a toxic ranged attack. sand worms and sand Worm Grubs are quite easy to kill, particularly if you shoot them in their mouths. as with other flesh-based enemies, they are vulnerable to fire attacks. sand Worm Queens are also susceptible to fire-based attacks but are far stronger and require a more delicate approach.
