Our Mission Raise and allocate philanthropic funds, primarily for the hospital’s programs and services that benefit the underserved, the elderly and the community. Our focus is on areas and issues that enhance the hospital’s mission but do not fall within the normal parameters of the hospital or its budget. The Summit Medical Center Health Foundation is the primary foundation for St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco, Colorado. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help! The courage Deb Pierce exhibited throughout her three-year battle with breast cancer was inspiring to all who knew and loved her. Now a fund created in her memory to cover the cost of mammograms for women in need will give hope and confidence to many women. Near the end of Deb Pierce’s struggle with breast cancer a group of Summit County friends organized a fundraiser to help the family with overwhelming costs associated with her cancer. Cooking for the Cure raised $50,000 on April 20, 2005. Deb passed away on October 12, 2006. In 2007 another Cooking for the Cure was organized to honor the memory of Deb Pierce and raised $35,000. A portion of the proceeds, $10,000, was presented to the hospital for the digital mammography machine fundraising effort and the balance was to be used for future needs of a breast cancer patient and their families in the area. Deb’s family, husband Doug and daughters Kelsey and Bonnie, have decided that the best way to honor their wife and mother would be to help fund mammograms for women in our community who are uninsured or underinsured and cannot afford the cost of the test. The best way to fight cancer is to detect the disease in its early stages with breast self-exams, clinical breast exams and mammograms based on age and health history. The foundation will be working with the Summit Community Care Clinic to identify women in need and provide funding for their digital mammograms in the imaging department at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center. You can help save lives! Donations to the fund will ensure that the Deb Pierce Mammography Fund has the resources to continue in perpetuity. Your gift can be made in honor or in memory of friends and family members who have also struggled with breast cancer. Nurse Navigator - Patient Advocate, Educator, Coordinator, Liaison, FRIEND When Noreen Galaba, RN, started her new position as Nurse Navigator in October 2012, she had no idea that she would have such an impact on the lives of patients at the hospital. She knew that overall statistics indicate that cancer patients with a nurse navigator experience a 70% increase in their five-year survival rate and a 50% decrease in repeat hospitalizations. What she didn’t know were the inspirational personal stories that patients would share. Part of Noreen’s job is to conduct community outreach in five area counties. After one woman heard her on Krystal 93 she came in for a mammogram that indicated pre-cancerous cells and she will begin treatment to save her life. Noreen has helped with genetic counseling, breast biopsies and setting appointments for mammograms, in addition to navigating patients through their breast cancer treatments. The Nurse Navigator position was initially funded by a grant from the Avon Foundation. Gifts to the Women’s Services Fund will continue funding for the Nurse Navigator program at the hospital.

Dancing with the Mountain Stars Reaches Outand Reaches Goal
In Loving Memory Jerry JamesWith Jerry James’ passing August 6, 2013 we have lost not only a loyal volunteer, valuable foundation board member and former chair but a friend and incredible supporter of Flight For Life and the hospital. Jerry’s first priority and love concerning the hospital was Flight For Life. He served on the original Flight For Life Campaign Cabinet and was extremely active in the fundraising efforts to build the hangar. He and Janie continued their support of Flight For Life over the years and encouraged their wide circle of Summit County friends to become donors also. Jerry led the effort to establish the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation in March 2007. He wisely guided the foundation over the last 7 years as Chair, board member and member of the Grants/Distribution, Nominating and Investment committees. From 2011—2013, he served as the Chair of the CHI Colorado Foundation State Board. Janie and Jerry were members of the first volunteer class at the hospital and since then they have been at the information desk most Tuesday mornings with their gracious smiles and helpful attitudes. Janie now continues her volunteer duties on Tuesdays and we are most grateful to have Janie and the spirit of Jerry with us.
“Gentleman Jerry” leaves us all with a model of living in the interest of others rather than ourselves. At Dancing with the Mountain Stars this year we were honored to present the first foundation “Volunteer of the Year” award in his memory. Jerry and Janie’s dear friends Don and Meredith Van Dyne were the first recipients of
this new award. Janie had the pleasure of presenting the award to the Van Dynes.
Jerry and his wife Janie have been full-time residents of Keystone for the past 15 years, having first visited Summit County in the 1970’s where Jerry found a spiritual connection with the mountains. Jerry retired as executive vice president with the Bank of America in Kansas City, Missouri. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, three children and five grandchildren. Gifts in memory of Jerry can be made to Flight For Life Colorado through the foundation.
The 6th Annual Dancing with the Mountain Stars was a sellout for the second year and comments from 751 guests ranged from “best event yet” to “can’t wait for next year!” The best news is that while financial figures are not yet final, the foundation expects to top last year’s net of $130,000.
Guests were challenged to light up the room and donate $100 per table to the beneficiary programs— ThinkFirst, SAFE KIDS, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (SANE) and Traumatic Brain Injury Program (TBI). The gala committee passed out “Starlights” to tables who reached the goal and soon the room was glowing. More than $9,000 was collected in less than ten minutes as many stepped up to lend a hand to ensure the sustainability of these injury prevention programs and emergency services at the hospital. The “Starlight” gifts when added to the sponsorships, silent auction, ticket sales and other donations will push the final net revenue over the goal.

Foundation PurchasesSimulation Man for Training
This summer the foundation board members enthusiastically approved funding to purchase a Laerdal simulation mannikin for use in training for Code Blue (Cardiac Arrest) and Code White (OB Hemmorage) situations, along with a number of other emergency situations.
As one might imagine, the “bionic” man is expensive and the $73,048 cost includes training, 5 years of upgrades and he has a 15-20 year life expectancy. “SimMan can be programmed to simulate real time situations and will give our nurses the opportunity to practice full-fledged mock codes four times per month,” explained Janice Schmidt, RN Educator. “In-service drills with CMC nursing students and EMS paramedics will also use SimMan,” she continued. Funds from generous donors to the Greatest Needs Fund and the Hospital Enchancement Fund were used for the purchase.
