About Summit House Support

• An independent specialist charity working with stigmatised communities in the boroughs of Dudley & Sandwell

• Founded in 1992 specialising in support services for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS

• Other service areas include LGBTQ communities and those in recovery from substance misuse

• Offer specialist bespoke training programmes

• Have offered community based HIV POCT since 2009 (Under Clinical governance of Dudley GUM Services)

• Nov/Dec 2013 Summit House Support provided POCT in pharmacies during our World AIDS Day awareness campaign

• Pharmacy services asked by sexual health commissioner in early 2014 to look at providing HIV POCT from pharmacies in high prevalence wards

• Individual Pharmacies contacted – Interest was high.• Summit House Support commissioned to provide POCT

training for pharmacy staff.

The Story…

• 3 training sessions during March and another in August 2014.

• Total of 40 staff trained from 12 pharmacies.• Some pharmacies reluctant to offer POCT service• Training included pre & post test information,

delivering results, referral procedure for reactive results, practical demo for test kit usage.

• Financial incentive offered to pharmacies offering POCT to get the service off the ground.

The Training….

• POCT service in pharmacies began May 2014• In 8 months, 446 tests carried out• Continuous support for staff providing POCT from Summit

House Support• National HIV Testing Week 2014 – Summit House Support

and Public Health Dudley again collaborated on a wide reaching campaign rolling out HIV POCT to more community venues inclusive of the whole community outside of the traditionally targeted high prevalence groups, where the communities do not normally have contact with HIV prevention messages

• Summit House Support and Public Health Dudley collaborated on a wide reaching campaign rolling out

accessible HIV POCT across the community.

• POC Testing venues including, Pharmacies, Leisure Centres, Libraries, Colleges and gained support of local community figures such as local football team, Council Leader and local MP, Community Police

• Piloted use of OraQuick Oral POCT kits via community testing campaign with a high uptake rate and positive feedback.
