Welcome to the 5th annual Summit 3 Speckle Park Sale. This year will see many changes, beginning with a NEW VENUE. We’ve decided to host the sale at Codiak Acres’ farm, 10 miles east of Edmonton. As well, we will be using a VIDEO SALE format rather than moving the animals through a sale ring. So, please, join us early on Good Friday, April 3, to get a good look through the offering and enjoy some hospitality featuring Speckle Park beef.

This sale represents two highly accomplished Speckle Park programs – Codiak Acres and River Hill Farm are leaders in the production of domestic and exportable genetics. Our bloodlines can be found in England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. We are also excited this year to be offering genetics from Australia’s Wattle Grove herd, in the form of two packages of exportable embryos.

Never in our memories has the cattle industry been so exciting, and Speckle Park are in high demand around the globe. Prices in 2014 reached remarkable heights, and no doubt this is only the beginning for this relatively new breed

River Hill farm is owned and operated by Barry and Elaine Ducherer, along with Carla, Mark and grandson Bo, and Cory and Katlin. Located in the Battle River valley between Maidstone and Neilburg, Saskatchewan, it was established in 1975 as a mixed farming and trucking operation. River Hill is proud to be celebrating its 20th anniversary of involvement with the Speckle Park breed and 5th

Though may not have been at all the shows and sales in the past years, he has done a lot of work with the animals before they come to town. This is a very special year for us at Codiak. It is our 25th anniversary of breeding Speckle Park cattle, and a 25th year wedding anniversary with my bride Nancy.

It’s been a great gig being involved with the Speckles. I sincerely have a tremendous amount of respect for our dealings with John and Dale Herbert from when we started out with the breed. John is as fair as he is tall and he was our mentor.

This year we are in a new venue, on farm. We did this to allow us the ability to spend some time with our friends and buyers. We want to say a special thanks to our partners, River Hill Farm and personally to Barry and Elaine.

We have covered a lot of ground in our 25 years and have had a lot of help along the way – special mention to some great people who have been along on the ride with us – first and foremost our dear family, but also people like Amanda, Angela, Joanne, and Rhonda, John & Chris, Layne, Marc, Matt, Adam and Riley. All have been a great help.

Someone once asked me how I looked at cattle and what was my vision – I suggested a cow had to fit in a box. I have not changed my philosophy: straight across the back and straight up and down. Add a great udder and feet – that’s my cow. Is every one we raise there? No, but we sure try.

In 2013/2014 we reviewed and changed our yearling bull feeding program, allowing us to maintain the bulls without punching in great amounts of grain. No doubt we could not facilitate the development program at home, so our bull calves were then sent to Scott Stock Farms Development Centre in Didsbury where they would be developed on a gentle program. Their diet was composed of wet silage, hay, and a small amount of grain/pellets.

In May the bulls were brought home and pastured without any grain supplementation until November. The bulls were then on a bull ration and hay until the end of January. Now the bulls are on a maintenance diet of good quality hay and a controlled amount of 70% oats and 30% barley/grain mix.

We have a very diverse selection of bulls from seven different sires. Please feel free to join us at the farm to view our sale animals.

We sold this embryo in 2012, and in 2014 had the fortune to aquire him back in a package from Nova Creek. Exporter was hurt in his first season, and so a very limited amount of semen was available. All settlements must be made with the sale clerk before the animals will be released, unless there has been an agreement made between the seller and purchaser prior to the sale.

LAYNE PICKETT has worked for Codiak part time for four years. A special way with livestock makes Layne very valuable in the treating and clipping chutes. Layne also works full time in the oil patch. If we were able to afford a full time herdsman, it would be Layne.

MARC LAPLANTE has worked part time at Codiak Acres for the past 10 years. In addition, Marc is a university student pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. Marc certainly has an impact when working with cattle or equipment and we value him greatly.

FLOYD WHITNEY has been River Hill’s herdsman for 18 years. He is very dedicated to our farm. Though he may not have been at all the shows and sales in the past years, he has done a lot work with the animals before they come to town. We can be assured things are looked after at home when we are away.
