Smart Africa Overview

Smart Africa Alliance

T he Transform Africa Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda on 28th-31st October 2013 culminated in the adoption of the Smart Africa Manifesto document by 7 African Heads of States in which they committed to provide leadership in accelerating socio-economic development through ICT.On 30th-31st January 2014, The Smart Africa Manifesto was endorsed by all Heads of State and Government of the African Union at the 22nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union in Addis Ababa. This development places the Manifesto at the heart of the ICT agenda in Africa beyond the 7 original signatories

at the Summit to all the 54 African countries.

The Alliance is a framework for implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Smart Africa Manifesto, designed to make it actionable. Currently, the Alliance is a partnership bringing together all African countries adhering to the Manifesto, the Private sector as well regional and international organizations such as the African Union (AU), the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB), UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), African Telecommunications Union (ATU), New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), the GSM Association (GSMA) and ICANN.

Besides its initial membership, other organizations and countries sharing the same vision, interests andgoals are admitted to the Alliance.

Smart Africa has 5 pillars which reflect the 5 principles of the Smart Africa Manifesto: Policy Access e-Government Private Sector/Entrepreneurship Sustainable Development

Each pillar is built on 4 cross-cutting Enabler namely Innovation, Communications and Advocacy, Capacity Building and Resource Mobilization. These will support the implementation of Smart Africa. The 5 pillars and 4 enablers, when effectively developed and combined, will contribute to Economic Growth and Job creation, which remains the ultimate goal of the Smart Africa Manifesto.

WORD FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dr. Hamadoun TouréExecutive Director, Smart Africa

Cities are engines for economic growth, and particularly for the African continent that has experienced the highest urban growth during the last two decades at 3.5% per year. This rate of growth is expected to hold into 2050.

It is anticipated that the share of the African urban population, which was at about 36% in 2010, will increase to 50% and 60% by 2030 and 2050 respectively. With the growing need for urban management, there’s an increasing necessity for intelligent planning of cities to make informed decisions about the correct choice of infrastructure and supporting technology.

Transform Africa Summit 2017 will be a highly interactive conference and exhibition that will showcase homegrown, cutting-edge technologies, real-world solutions and proven strategies government leaders need to build more livable, workable, sustainable cities.

It will explore how Smart Cities can respond to a growing number of challenges and issues related to water management, energy management, mobility & transport, housing & building, health, education, sustainable environments and public safety.

Participants will have an opportunity to debate and experience the next wave of innovative, integrated technologies that are already helping cities around the world become more compassionate, connected, responsive and sustainable.

The summit features the unveiling of key action documents: the Africa Smart and Sustainable Cities Blueprint outlining the plan achieving the Smart Africa goal and the Africa Smart Women and Girl Initiative which will be presented by the First ladies of Africa highlighting the crucial role Women and Girls play in African’s digital transformation agenda.

Africa’s time is now. As technology drives mobility and connectivity in urbanized societies, African cities continuously seek to establish new infrastructure and city systems that will enable transition, and position them as global leaders and next generation cities.

The summit will focus on how smart cities’ innovations can, and will drive to faster deliver Africa’s socio-economic transformation and real business revenue.

We look forward to seeing you at the Transform Africa Summit.

DISCOVERRWANDA

When visiting the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’, one should not miss out on the magnificent opportunity to visit Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park consisting of 125 km2 of mountain forest and home to the six Virunga Volcanoes and the world famous mountain gorillas. Protected within the park, the lushly forested slopes of the mountains form an appropriately dramatic natural setting for what is arguably the most poignant and memorable wildlife experience in the world: gorilla trekking.

Nothing can prepare one for the impact of encountering a fully-grown silverback gorilla, up to three times the size of an average man, yet remarkably peaceable and tolerant of human visitors.

Based in Nyanza, 88 km south of Kigali City, this was the residence of King Mutara III Rudahigwa and site of the Royal Palace that was traditionally built. This Palace offers a detailed look into Rwandan traditional seat of their monarchy. It is an impressive museum restored to its 19th century state and made entirely with traditional materials. The long horned traditional cows, known in Kinyarwanda as “Inyambo”, were recently introduced to exemplify their integral role in Rwandan Culture . On the neighboring hill of Mwima, one can also visit the burial grounds of King Mutara III and his wife Queen Rosalie Gicanda.

Akagera National Park has exceptional levels of biodiversity and forms the largest protected wetland in central Africa. It is home to a large variety of species restricted to the papyrus swamps such as the Sitatunga and the sought-after Shoebill Stork. Notable game includes elephant, buffalo, topi, zebra, waterbuck, roan antelope and eland. Other antelope are duiker, oribi, bohor reedbuck, klipspringer, bushbuck and impala. Of the primates, olive baboons, vervets and the secretive blue monkey are seen during the day whilst the bushbabies often seen on night drives. Larger predators including leopard, hyena, side-striped jackal and lion are also present in the park.

Nyungwe is one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rainforests. It is believed to be one of Africa’s oldest forests, staying green even through the Ice Age, which explains its diversity.Home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primates species (including a 400-strong troop of habituated Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus), it is also a birder’s paradise with over 300 species, including 16 endemics, and is home to 75 different species of mammal.Hiking or even biking the beautiful terrain, tracking the famous chimpanzees, experiencing the canopy walk, witnessing beautiful birds, relaxing by waterfalls are just a glimpse of activities that Nyungwe offers.

In 2001, in collaboration with Rwanda’s National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide (CNLG), the Aegis Trust raised the $2 million required to build the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The centre was officially opened on 7 April 2004 to mark the tenth commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The memorial is the final resting place for up to 259,000 victims of the genocide and serves as a place where people can grieve for their lost loved ones and remember them. It also serves as a museum where both local and international visitors can learn about the history, implementation and consequences of the genocide.

TOURISMRwanda is a green, mountainous landscape renowned for its Volcanoes National Park that encompasses the 4,507m-tall Mt. Karisimbi and 4 other forested volcanoes, as well as being home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Adding to that the Nyungwe National Park, with ancient mountain rainforest that’s a habitat for chimpanzees and other primates, the vast Akagera National park and other iconic sites, your visit to the Transform Africa Summit will present unique opportunities to enrich your travel experience by exploring the Land of Thousand Hills.
