Dear Fourth Grade Students and Farnilies, MS

Welcome to fourth gradel We hope that you are

excited about starting a new school year. We are

thrilled to be working with you and your child next

year!

Attached to this letter is a summer work packet. In the past

parents have asked for materials for their children to practice during the

summer. AS a result of this and the Common COREbeing implemented

in New York State, we have developed this packet. The Common CORE,

along with many changes to curriculum, requires that students work

with more rigorous material to be college and career

ready.

Iris very important that while your child enjoys the

summer, that s/he takes time to prepare for the

upcoming school year. This packet is due the first week of

school. Your child's name will be put into a raffle at our first assembly

and will have a chance to win a prize. A majority of the packet is a mix

of English Language Arts and Math practice work It is a priority for

Students to practice their math facts, especially multiplication. In

addition, your child needs to make sure they read over the summer.

Please assist your child in completing the summer work If your

child completes a bit at a time, it won't feel like Too much at once. Please

look for information in the mail this summer regarding time to come

visit your classroom before school begins. Thank you for supporting your

child's education and enjoy the summer!

Sincerely,

The Fourth Grade Team

The Powerof Hurricanesby ReadWorks

illustration of the earth and equator

The equatoris an imaginary line along on the earth that sits between the North and South Poles.

Places néar the equatorhavetropicalclimates. Tropical climates are often hot, humid, and wet.

In fact, many places near the equator receive over100 inchesofrainfall every year! These

tropical storms can sometimes form into hurricanes.

Hurricanesare tropical stormsthat can last up to 14 days long. They begin at the ocean around

the equator. Whenthe tropical storm movesnorth, it can run into coolerair. As a result, the rain

gets heavier and the wind gets more powerful. In the centerof the storm, thereis the "eye of the

storm." Rain does notfall in the eye, but the winds surrounding the calm eye are dangerous.

The windsthere can blow at 200 miles per hour! Trees and homescanberuinedif the

hurricane's eye travels close by.

Hurricanescantravel across the ocean for thousandsof miles. They usually die at sea without

making it to land. When hurricanes do makeit to land, they can be disastrous. Hurricanes can

cause floods and mudslides, which can kill people. One of the worst hurricanesto hit the United

States was Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Hurricane Katrina started in the Bahamas and

then traveled northwest. It hit a few states, including Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi. It

causedflooding and destroyed many homes. About 1,830 people died as a result of Hurricane

Katrina and the flooding afterward.

Photographofflooding after Hurricane Katrina

If a hurricane is powerful enough, people usually evacuate,or leave, their homes. If people

decide to stay, they can take steps to protect their homes. Onething that people dois trim their

trees. Dead tree branchescanoftenfly off in the wind and crash into homes. Anotherthing that

people dois install a special kind of shutter on their windows. These shutters are stronger than

normal shutters. They block wind and rain from entering the house.

Some companiesarestarting to build homes that can stand up against winds blowing at 185

miles per hour. These homesare also raised above the ground, so they arelesslikely to be

flooded. Would you wantto live in one of these homes?
