El Sella es un ritual que sigueel espíritu de su fundador,

Dionisio de la Huerta, que porperder un tren en Coria (en eloccidente de Asturias), en 1929,acabó yendo a Infiesto por elrío en piragua. Con la grataexperiencia de aquellos 5 kiló-metros recorridos desde Coriahasta el puente de Infiesto, Dio-nisio convenció a unos amigospara que le acompañasen ríoabajo hasta Arriondas y asínació la prueba. ‘Hoy palistasde todo el mundo reproduceneste recorrido fluvial’, detalla elgaitero nacido en Villaviciosahace 38 años. ‘Desde hace 40años, el encargado de dar lasalida tiene que cantar el himno‘Asturias patria querida’, queyo toqué con la gaita porque nocanto muy bien. Ese día habíamás de un millar de personas,que me trasmitieron unas sen-saciones muy intensas. El Sellano es sólo un evento localdeportivo. Profesionales y ‘ama-teurs’ acuden no por la dificul-tad de la prueba, que es poca,sino por el prestigio internacio-nal que tiene. Para un palistahacer el Sella es como para unmusulmán ir a la Meca. Es unevento simbólico’, asegura.

Da la sensación de que conocebien la prueba, ¿cuándo fue laprimera vez que participó?Tenía 15 años. Fui con unamigo en tándem desde el pue-blo de Arriondas. El Sella es unacontecimiento que se sigue enpiragua, en tren y por carretera.Nosotros optamos por este tipode bicicleta con la mala suertede que se nos rompió la cadena

y tuvimos que hacer dedo yapiñarnos en un Land Rovercon otras 20 personas. Buscá-bamos captar el lado románticoy tuvimos todo lo contrario,pero fue muy divertido’,comenta el músico sin dejar derecalcar el gran aforo del evento.‘Tengo unos amigos hispanoa-mericanos que programan susvacaciones para ir todos losaños. Es habitual ver deportis-tas de Nueva Zelanda o deSudáfrica, resulta increíble surepercusión internacional’.

¿Por qué recomendaría acudir?Es una fiesta querida porquetiene un componente inusualde colectividad y el asturiano,al vivir en pequeños valles, esun pueblo muy individualista.Me encantan las fiestas que

fomentan la unión del pueblo.Para los foráneos es un acon-tecimiento único que sirve asu vez de punto de partidapara conocer la partemás occidental deAsturias y tam-bién los Picosde Europa. Seconvierte enuna excelenteexcusa paraunas intensasvacaciones.

The River Sella descent is aritual that carries on in the

spirit of its founder, Dionisiode la Huerta, who, as a resultof missing a train in Coria (inthe west of Asturias) in 1929,ended up going to Infiestodown the river in a canoe. Withthe pleasant experience of those5km down the river from Coriato the bridge of Infiesto, Dioni-sio convinced some friends toaccompany him down the riverto Arriondas, and so the eventwas born. ‘Nowadays, canoeistsfrom all over the world relivethis river route’ says the piper,born in Villaviciosa 38 yearsago. ‘For 40 years, the starter ofthe race has had to sing theanthem ‘Asturias patria que-rida’, which I played on the bag-pipes because I do not sing very

well. That day there weremore than a thousandpeople, who transmitted

very intense sensations.The River Sella descent is

not just a local sporting event.Professionals and amateurs

are attrac-ted notby the

difficultyof the event,

which is notconsiderable,

but by the international pres-tige it enjoys. For a canoeist, theSella descent is like going toMecca for a Muslim. It is asymbolic event’, he assures us.

You give the sensation of kno-wing the event very well, whenwas the first time you took part?I was 15. I went with a friendon a tandem from the town ofArriondas. The Sella is an eventthat is followed in canoe, trainor by road. We chose this typeof bicycle and had the misfor-tune of breaking the chain andwe had to hitch-hike andsqueeze ourselves into a LandRover with another 20 people.We wanted to capture theromantic side and we got theopposite, but it was great fun’,remarks the musician whonever stops emphasising thegreat attraction of the event. ‘Ihave South American friendswho plan their holidays so thatthey can go every year. It iscommon to see competitorsfrom New Zealand or SouthAfrica. It is incredible the inter-national following it has’.

Why would you recommendpeople to come?It is a much loved event becauseit has an unusual componentof collectiveness and Asturians,as they live in small valleys, area very individualistic people.For outsiders it is a uniqueevent that acts as the startingpoint for getting to know thewestern most part of Asturiasand the Picos de Europa.
