Dear friends in Christ,

August is here and soon we will wind down

our warm weather plans as school will open it

doors. Hopefully, everyone feels renewed

through their time away and by experiencing

warmer weather. Recently, we sang a less

familiar hymn “When pain of the world sur-

rounds us.” It was used on the 8th Sunday after Pentecost and coincided with

Marks’ passage about the death of John the Baptist. I didn’t preach on that

passage from Mark, but I did share about the prophet Amos and how com-

placency often leads us to see cries for justice as just the voice of trouble-

makers. We really need to listen for God speaking through the cries for jus-

tice. The hymn I mentioned is full of great meaning. I hope that your hearts

continue to be warmed to the challenges of the work we have to do as

church. The hymn is a lament, and laments are not bad, but they include

pleas to God for help. Our prayer petitions for justice and fairness are part of

faith formation.

The first verse of the hymn goes like this: “When pain of the world surrounds

us with darkness and despair, when searching just confounds us with false

hopes everywhere, when lives are starved for meaning and destiny is bare,

we are called to follow Jesus and let God’s healing flow through us.” To be

sure there is plenty of examples of pain in the world and those experiences

can act to surround us with darkness and despair. One example of breaking

the “darkness and despair” involved the recent response of the ELCA to

world hunger. While even the darkness is not dark to God, God calls us to

be the light and to serve and be generous to those in need. Light came

through the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas, where $260,000 was

raised for the World Hunger’s Global Farm Challenge. Those funds and oth-

er examples of generosity brought light into the darkness of hunger and star-

vation. Generosity at the Houston Youth Gathering included 437 hair dona-

tions for children with hair loss, 1248 units of blood, 40,000 books and more.

Looking at this phrase from above, “when searching just confounds us with

false hopes,” we can lament that conversation about domestic issues has

become way too bitter. Yet young people of our time are searching to be-

lieve, to belong, and to make a difference in the world. While we lament our

unwillingness as a society to have open dialog on issues, it is inspiring that

God uses people of all ages to care for others. We can have different per-

spectives as we get older, but it should matter to us that young people are

searching for meaning in their lives. It is a hopeful thing to care. As the

hymn mentions there are still false hopes out there, we know why too. Con-

tinued greed, intolerance, and focus on self-reliance, reminds us that sin per-

sists in our broken world. While the urge to succeed at all costs and to be

important remains strong in popular culture, it doesn’t mesh with the Gospel’s

call to serve others as Christ showed us. The good news is that in being

called to follow Jesus, we know what to trust and what God wants us to care

about. We trust in the divine charge to love God and to love one another in

the same love God has for us.

Blessings in Christ’s name,

Pastor Jim
