Welcome to the Roman River Music

Summer Weekend

Coggeshall is one of Essex’s prettiest market towns,

boasting an impressive selection of restaurants and pubs; the perfect place to while away a summer weekend, relax with friends, enjoy top-quality performances and meet wonderfully talented musicians.

You can stay locally at a variety of local inns and hotels or visit for the day – Coggeshall can be reached easily by car or from the main railway line from London Liverpool Street.

Whilst in the area you may like to visit Paycocke’s House or Grange Barn, one of the oldest timber-framed buildings in Europe, both managed by The National Trust, or perhaps arrange a tour of the beautiful, privately-owned Abbey.

Further information for all events is available on our website, meanwhile do enjoy browsing the events in this brochure and use the detachable booking form to apply for tickets.

T empt friends away from the City to meet charismatic

young performers bringing La Belle Époque to life in the tranquillity of St Peter ad Vincula, Coggeshall.

Iconic masterpieces rub shoulders with exquisite rarities in this four-concert festival celebrating the rich treasure trove of music by French composers from the golden age of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Enjoy exquisite performances, delicacies and refreshments with

a delightful backdrop of music by Debussy, Fauré and Ravel.

Eight international performing artists appear in multiple permutations from intimate solos and duos to glorious quintets and sextets, all recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and introduced by one of their presenters.

Join us for some of the most exhilarating and sensuous music ever written and a wonderfully exciting milestone for Roman River Music.

Fauré Violin Sonata No1 in A major Ravel String Quartet in F major

Elena Urioste violin Tom Poster pianoThe Navarra Quartet

Fauré’s first violin sonata is one of Elena Urioste’s favourite works – lyrical and rapturous, it prompted Fauré’s teacher Saint-Saëns to declare that “in this sonata you can find everything to tempt a gourmet… a magic floats above everything, encompassing the whole work”.

The Navarra Quartet has received great acclaim for its performances of the French repertoire, and Ravel’s sensuous, impressionistic string quartet is one of chamber music’s undisputed masterpieces.

Debussy’s ever-popular violin sonata, premiered 100 years ago, is filled with nostalgia and brilliance. Two rare works combining voices and chamber forces follow: Saint-Saëns’ bewitching dialogue between voice and obbligato violin, and an exquisite early work by Messiaen in which two souls express hope of reunion. Tom Poster fell in love with Fauré’s ravishing first piano quintet in his early teens and it has been one of his ‘desert island discs’ ever since.

Ravel Pavane pour une infante défunteChausson Chanson perpétuelle Fauré La bonne chanson Ravel Piano Trio

Elena Urioste violin Tom Poster pianoThe Navarra QuartetRaphaela Papadakis sopranoKarim Sulayman tenor

Better known in its orchestral incarnation, Ravel’s enchanting Pavane brought the composer his first great success. Among the most beautiful examples of the fusing of chamber music and song are Chausson’s last completed work, the intensely moving Chanson perpétuelle, and Fauré’s joyfully passionate celebration of love, La bonne chanson. Ravel’s only piano trio, a feast of colour and near-orchestral sonorities, demands the greatest virtuosity from all three players.

Poulenc Songs (selection) Chausson Concert in D major

Elena Urioste violin Tom Poster pianoThe Navarra QuartetRaphaela Papadakis sopranoKarim Sulayman tenor

Poulenc’s songs reveal his rare gift for drawing out the very essence of poetry with music. Here Raphaela Papadakis and Karim Sulayman will perform some of their personal favourites.

Our weekend reaches its climax with Chausson’s magnificent Concert. Too rarely heard due to its unusual forces, the Concert is filled with glorious, romantic melodies and bravura display. Following its premiere, Chausson declared “Never have I had such a success! I can’t get over it. Everyone seems to love the Concert.”

£24 / £18 / £12 / £6 / £3

All these concerts will be recorded for future broadcast as part of Radio 3's BIG CHAMBER WEEKEND. We are delighted to have been selected for this flagship national series.

Raphaela Papadakis

He has been described as “a marvel, [who] can play anything in any style” (The Herald). Tom features regularly on BBC radio and television and has made multiple appearances at the BBC Proms. Tom enjoys established duo partnerships with Alison Balsom, Guy Johnston and Elena Urioste.

Elena Urioste has given acclaimed performances with major orchestras throughout the United States. She has appeared with the London Philharmonic, Hallé, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. She has regularly performed in Carnegie Hall and has given recitals in numerous distinguished venues including the Wigmore Hall.

Karim Sulayman is consistently praised for his sensitive musicality, vivid portrayals, and beautiful, versatile vocalism. With a vast repertoire that spans baroque to contemporary music, he enjoys a busy calendar in opera and concert performances throughout the world. He has participated in the Marlboro Festival and made debuts at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and Boston Lyric Opera. Previous seasons include engagements with New York City Opera, Carnegie Hall, the Casals Festival, Music of the Baroque, Chicago Opera Theater and the Aldeburgh Festival.

Raphaela Papadakis studied at the Guildhall School and made her professional operatic début at Garsington Opera in 2014, which was singled out by the Financial Times as the “most attractive solo performance” of the show. Raphaela made her song recital début at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2014 following an Artist Residency at the Banff Centre, Canada.

The Navarra Quartet has built an international reputation as one of the most dynamic and poetic string quartets of today. The Quartet has collaborated with artists such as Li-Wei, Guy Johnston, Mark Padmore, Allan Clayton, Francesco Piemontesi, John O’Conor, Jack Liebeck, Simone Young and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
