PREFACE

The MBA curriculum has been designed to provide to the future managers ample practical exposure to the business world. The summer training is necessary part of the fulfillment of MBA degree course. It helps the student to gain knowledge about various aspects to the industry, emphasizing on the development of the skill in analyzing and interpreting practical problem through application of concept and theory. The researcher has conducted his research in Instrumentation Limited, Kota. It was established in 1964 and the commercial product started in the year 1968. Recently Instrumentation Limited has diversified in the field of telecommunication, Power electronics and energy conservation devices and more. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Instrumentation Limited (better known as IL) is a Government of India Enterprise set up in 1964 with the prime objective of attaining self reliance in the field of Control and Automation for process industry. Today IL is manufacturing and supplying state of the art control equipment on turnkey basis to various sectors of Industry viz. Power, Steel, Fertilizer, Chemical, Petrochemical, Refineries, Pharmaceutical, Cement, Paper, Textile, Space, and Oil & Gas. We have our registered and corporate office at Kota in state of Rajasthan. Manufacturing facilities are based at Kota and Palakkad in Kerala State. Flow elements, control valve and actuators are manufactured at Palakkad plant other items are manufactured at Kota plant. Our manufacturing facilities are accredited with ISO 9000 certification. The marketing network is widely spread all over India having Branch offices in major cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Vadodara and Regional offices at Lucknow, Bokaro, Secunderabad for organizing installation and commissioning and related services. Site offices at many project sites are functioning under these regional offices. With over thirty years of experience and a competent and dedicated workforce, IL has mastered all complexities of control system requirement and can lead you through your project, from system design, detailed engineering, manufacturing, testing, system integration, installation, final commissioning to after sales service and customer training. IL has further diversified in the fields of Power electronics; Telecommunications, Railway Signaling systems, Defence electronics and Computer based application s to have comprehensive range of product and services. The present product handling of the company comprises of sophisticated Digital Distributed Control systems, high performance electronic transmitters, desk/panel mounted controllers, indicators, recorders and other hardware, liquid and gas analyzers, with sample handling and conditioning system, annunciation system, panels, instrument cabinet and racks, Flow elements, Computer based applications, Control valves, actuators in addition to Telecommunication systems, Defence electronics, Railway signaling systems, Uninterrupted Power Supply Systems(UPS), Solar Dusk Dawn System(SDDS) etc. IL, after establishing itself as an undisputed leader has crossed the Indian borders to supply equipment on turnkey basis in International markets. IL has supplied instrumentation on turnkey basis to two thermal power stations in Malaysia, supplied instrumentation to Esfahan steel plant in Iran, Hima cement plant in Uganda to name few. A major breakthrough was achieved in export market when IL received large orders from Lisichansk Oil Refinery in the erstwhile USSR for supply of DDC system and other equipment on turnkey basis.

Control & InstrumentationThis is the main area in which IL operates. The company was set up to meet the Control & Instrumentation requirement of Process industries of India. The company dedicates itself to this task with full sincerity to ensure rapid economic development of the country based on timely commissioning of various projects and satisfactory operation/ maintenance of already commissioned projects at a high level of efficiency , availability and plant utilization factor as far as the Control & Instrumentation is concerned. ILs Process control market can be segmented in to Industrial categories such as Power generation, especially Thermal Power Plants, Mining & Metallurgy including Iron & Steel production, Non-Ferrous metals like Aluminum and Copper / Zinc Smelter & Refineries, Petrochemicals including Oil & Gas Production, Chemicals including Pharmaceuticals & Water treatment plant, Cement, Paper, Fertilizers etc. IL has been a saga of success through hard work , vibrant ethos and high level of team spirit. A strong turn-key capability has been established through expertise in System design, Engineering, software development, Manufacturing, Testing, Installation, Commissioning and after sales service. For the large projects IL has supplied DDC System of world-renowned manufacturers like ABB, Seimens and Max Controls. Steel Plants: We are the only Indian company to have the privilege of supplying & executing the C&I jobs on turn-key basis in almost all the steel plants. IL has done automation job for various mills like Blast Furnace, Coke-Oven Battery, Slab/Strip/Rolling Mills, Wheel & Axle Plants, Captive Power Plants of Steel Plants. IL has supplied DDC system of world- renowned manufacturers to these plants. For small systems PC based system with single loop controllers has been supplied.

Other Process Industries: IL has supplied & executed C&I jobs on turn key basis in Oil Refineries, Cement, Paper, Fertilizer plants etc. In addition to Turn-key jobs IL has been doing retails product sale through Marketing Division and have supplied various type of Instruments to Industry . PROJECT MANAGEMENT CAPABILITYWhen IL takes up a project, it is not just the schemes and systems of the instrumentation, but the rendering of all updated technology, innovative thinking and professional experience. Beginning from system design they go on to final commissioning and customer training. This is often done by using Critical Path Analysis techniques, PERT/cost network and similar systems. The project team is responsible for all commercial and technical aspects, backed by all the companys resources and facilities.

SYSTEM DESIGN & SYSTEM INTEGRATIONIL is in the field of C&I for over thirty years and has absorbed technologies of various generation of Instruments. IL has also dealt with products of various reputed Manufacturers of Instruments & DDC systems. IL has thus developed capability of working as system integrator. IL has expertise available for system design by selection of hardware & software and integration of multiple subsystems of different origin. This expertise of IL of system integration is of great advantage for customer who do have preferences for different makes of instruments.

MANUFACTURINGWe manufacture a range of over 600 product variations at the Kota and Palakkad Plants. Our manufacturing plants are accredited with ISO 9000 series certification. Accuracy and reliability being the aim, the manufacturing facilities include modern assembly shops, Modern PCB center equipped with state of the art facilities like wave soldering machine, Surface mounting technology (SMT) machine etc, comprehensive machine shops equipped with CNC machines, plastic molding, die-casting, Electroplating and special facilities of panel manufacture at Kota.

A modern flow laboratory to conduct seat leakage tests, latest facilities for stage-by-stage testing and calibration, and to check operation of products under simulated conditions, are available

QUALITY ASSURANCEThe quality policy of Instrumentation Limited Kota is: Our quality policy is to ensure satisfaction of the customer by providing products and Services of National/International quality. IL is ISO 9000 series certified organization for our products i.e. Telecommunication digital switching system based on C-DOT technology, Railway Signaling Relay, Uninterrupted Power Supply Systems and Control valves by internationally acclaimed certifying agencies IQRS and Den Norkse Veritas (DNV) It is only through unsurpassed quality that IL has reached and maintained the top position. The final product undergoes a series of rigorous tests. To begin with all materials, parts and components are checked. Then sub-assemblies built from these parts are tested before final assembly, and each and every completed instrument is rigorously checked out to achieve high standards of calibration and performance. And to top it all, the Quality Assurance Laboratory conducts an independent check before dispatch to customers. And thats not all. IL goes still further tracing and monitoring any defect occurring in the field. Correcting the faults, thus finding ways and means to bring in improvements.

Test and Measurement FacilitiesCalibration and Testing laboratories of IL are having Testing & Measurement equipments traceable to NPL/ERTL. This facility is offered to our ancillaries and other users on chargeable basis.

Third party inspectionIL has well qualified and experienced officials performing the quality assurance functions. IL offers the services for third party inspection to interested customers.

INSTALLATION & COMMISSIONINGIL can undertake the installation & commissioning of diverse industries such as power plants, steel plants, sugar and cement plants, chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and Petro chemicals. The Engineering and Planning Department prepares pre-contract plans and hook up drawings as per the project requirement. Special emphasis is laid on our facilities of Contract Management, Labour Planning, Inspection and Procurement of all materials together with the provision of plant workshop/store facilities and site office accommodation, tools and test equipment and allied services. AFTER-SALE SERVICE & MAINTENANCE CONTRACTSILs responsibility does not end with the making of supreme quality products. Smooth running of instruments is ensured by ILs factory-trained service engineers, strategically located all over. Delhi, Madras, Bombay and Calcutta offices have their own service departments headed by a service engineer, also supported by the central service department at the headquarter. IL undertakes maintenance and services contracts for power plants, steel plants and other process industries for C&I systems/equipment including well planned preventive

maintenance, annual running maintenance, periodic maintenance and major modifications and/or improvements. IL also undertakes setting up of Test Laboratory for C&I equipment with advanced microprocessor-based PC-compatible test instruments for process industries.

CUSTOMER TRAININGIL believes that for high performance and accuracy of its instrumentation, instrument engineers at customers end need instructions in the correct method of dealing with routine checks and repairs, for which the need may arise from time to time. For this purpose, ILs Customer Training Courses designed to meet the needs of Mechanics, Supervisors and Engineers are available.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENTIL successfully continues to come up with design solution that meets tomorrows needs today. TELECOMMUNICATION

After serving the Process Industries with C&I systems it was but natural for the IL to diversify into area of Telecommunication to serve the Nation in more effective way. Information technology and communication are being the most promising area of business. IL therefore entered into technical tie-up with Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a Telecom Technology Center of Govt. of India for its switching products. Instrumentation Limited has been pioneer in manufacturing and servicing of Telecom switching equipments since 1988. Beginning with 128P RAX (Rural Automatic Exchange) catering to needs of Rural Areas, it has gradually evolved through medium size exchanges (256P RAX, 512P SBM RAX) to current large size switches (Main Automatic Exchange-XL) appropriate for Urban and Metro (Central Office) Application. Presently IL is one of the major suppliers of C-DOT Digital switching systems in India and has supplied systems almost all Telecom Circle of DOT. Exchanges supplied by us are working satisfactorily at more than 300 locations. Supply statistics stand at about one million lines and Turnover figure of Rs. 265 Crores The present product range includes large size switches (MAX-XL), Remote Switches (RSU and RLC) for 2nd and 3rd level of Remote Switching and IVRS, MAX-XL is a Stored Program Controlled switch based on Time-Space-Time (TST) Switching technology and caters to maximum 40,000 lines and 5,000 trunks having both PSTN and ISDN (Basic Rate and Primary Rate applications). It can be used as integrated SSP (Service Switching Point) for IN (Intelligent Network) services and can cater to about 1,530 Access Network Subscribers on V5.2 Interface. Telecom Division boasts of nearly 200 highly skilled and trained manpower. The Division encompasses advanced PCB Assembly lines including conventional and SMT Assembly facilities. The System Integration Center of the Division has facilities for validation and testing of PSTN Lines, BRI and PRI and CCS7 links. It also hasin-house infrastructure for production of mechanical hardware for its switching products. IL has excellent facilities like fully equipped state-of-the-art Repairing Center for repair of Multi-layer PCB Assemblies comprising of EPLD and FPGA devices and 32 bit Microprocessors for C-DoT Technology Switches. Its Service Center has so far repaired more than 40,000 cards and is capable of repairing 1,000 cards per month. Experts undertake at short notice and at very competitive rates fault repairing/commissioning of exchange.

We are carrying the assimilation of technology and development of new range of Wire line Switching Products having enhanced capacity of 1 Lacs lines and 16,000 trunk lines including 3,075 access network subscribes on V5.2 interface. The new switch would have traffic capacity of 14,400 Erlagns, 8 Lacs BHCA and with 128 Signaling links. When used as TAX (Trunk Automatic Exchange) it will have capacity of 30,000 trunks. The new product is expected to be brought in production by the beginning of 2003.

Power Electronics & Energy Conservation Devices

Being in Control & Instrumentation field for several years, it was natural for IL to diversify in related areas of Power Electronics. As a turn-key supplier of C&I system ,IL used to procure and supply UPS system, so efforts were made to enter as manufacturer in this Area. After UPS production was established , energy saving items like Solar Dusk to Dawn Switching System (SDDS) was developed. Electronic Energy meter is also developed and is under BS certification before Commercial launch. Instrumentation Limited is manufacturing Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems for the last 15 years. UPS works are ISO-9001 certified by the renowed certification agency DNV. These UPS Systems are designed with IGBT in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique and Digital Control Technology suitable for wise range of power requirement both for Single and Three Phases. These are highly efficient, reliable, low acoustic noise level with excellent economy in installation and operating costs. The products find wide application from industries to banks, hospitals, insurance sector, computer installations etc. UPS systems manufactured by IL are classified in two categories namely Mini UPS and CVCF UPS. Mini UPS: These UPS incorporate IGBT based PWM design for optimum efficiency for AC/DC conversion and suitable for non-linear loads with built-in Electronic Current Limiting features. These UPS are backed up by maintenance free high quality batteries. The rated capacity available is from 1 KVA to 10 KVA for single phase requirement. Constant Voltage Constant Frequency (CVCF) UPS. These UPS are available in wide range from 10 KVA to 600 KVA both for single phase and three phase requirement. Use of IPM ensures higher reliability and excellent performance. It guarantees high efficiency of the order of 95% and above and an AC/AC overall conversion efficiency of better than 89% thus rendering substantial reduction in running costs. Being IPM based, UPS, special circuits like commutation circuit are not required and therefore, these UPS are compact and light weight and have a low acoustic noise level. Use of floating battery

system. Caters for no interruptions or fluctuations when commercial power supply fails. These UPS are stable against abrupt variations in the load due to their Pulse Width Modulation feature. DEFENCE PRODUCTThe purpose of setting up of IL was to attain self-reliance in C&I field for process industries. After contributing its share towards this objective it was thought proper to utilize the expertise gained in field of high tech electronics and manufacturing facilities in other areas. It was decided to use the expertise gained to help Defence forces in getting the equipment indigenously. Keeping this in view a separate group was formed to liaison with agencies like MOD, Ordnance factories etc to find out the requirement which IL can design, develop, manufacture and supply meeting the stringent Defence specifications. Telephone Field Electronic 7AIt is a field Telephone meant for inter communication purpose within unit. It is primarily designed for Magnetic role. However, with the plug-in Dial unit it can also be used as an extension for Auto/CB Exchange.

Telephone Loud Speaking 4A

The equipment meets the requirement of inter communication between Command post and Gun unit in the field branch of artillery. The equipment enables the Gun Position Officer (GPO) at the Command post to broadcast orders to a maximum of six Gun units which can be located upto a distance of 500 metres from the Command post. It also provides two way communications between Command post and Gun units. Facilities are also provided for Director Station personnel to communicate with the Command post as well as with the Gun units.

RPL Dosimeter ReaderRadio Photo Luminescence (RPL) Dosimeter Reader enables the commander to

assess the radiation dose received by the units under his command and the individual monitoring of personnel for initial sorting of causalities. RPL Reader detects and displays the Neutron radiation and summation of Neutron and Gamma radiation doses received by Dosimeter Lockets, which are worn by the field personnel.

INSTRUMENTATION LIMITED PALAKKAD COMPANY PROFILESelf reliance in Control and Instrumentation and the growing need for an indigenoussource of supply of C&I systems for core industries like power, steel, oil, gas, refineries, petrochemicals and chemicals it was to achieve this prime objectives that Instrumentation Ltd (IL) was established at Kota, Rajasthan in 1964. This unit manufactures a wide range of electronic and pneumatic instruments in collaboration with world renowned leaders like Toshiba, Japan; H&B, Germany; Fuji Electric, Japan; ABB, UK; Kyosan BV, Japan. The second unit was established exactly a decade later at Palakkad dedicated to the manufacture of control valves, butterfly valves, pressure reducing valves and allied equipments required for the C&I packages being supplied by IL on a turnkey basis. The third unit was set up in early 1990s for the manufacture of UPS of Fuji, Japan and Telephone exchanges of C-DOT at Jaipur.

ISO-9001 CertificationInstrumentation Limited Palakkad, is the first control valve manufacturer in India to receive ISO 9001 certification and recertified for upgraded 2000 version in February 2004. Delivery The excellent sub-vendor base developed by Palakkad Unit caters short term delivery requirements of fast track projects. We have also substantially added to our manufacturing capacity to facilitate faster delivery to our customers. Valve size less than 6" can be delivered in 6 to 8 weeks from the date of receipt of firm order and in 8 to 10 weeks for valves of sizes above 6" and high pressure valves.

Manufacturing Facilities

The facilities for manufacture and testing of valves - Control valves, Butterfly valves, Rotary Plug valves, Safety Relief Valves, Pressure Reducing valves, Bellows sealed valves, Electrical actuators etc. - established at Palakkad plant are one of the best in this part of the world. ILP is the only company in India to have all in-house facility to manufacture globe type control valves ranging from " to 30" size and rating up to ANSI 2750 special class and Butterfly valves up to size 2400 NB A team of Engineers and Technicians trained for the past so many years are available to bring out the best quality product. The plant is also equipped with sophisticated CNC lathes, CNC drilling, machining centre and vertical turret lathe with a swing of 4.3 Meter, roller burnishing machine, vertical turret lathes and productivity is of a very high order ensuring quality and reliability. A Clean room facility is created for manufacturing of Bellows sealed Valves. We have with us special NC machines which not only ensure very high degree of accuracy but also repeatability and higher productivity. It is a fact that many leading valve manufacturers in the world have started buying castings from India. Instrumentation Ltd. Palghat can claim for having developed many of the sources for supply of castings for control valve requirements. It enjoys a much better rapport with the suppliers to bring out the best quality aspects to the castings. More so, because the proximity to the supplier is well enjoyed by way of frequent interaction with the foundries right from the stage of pattern making through mould making and pouring and hence, ILP is fully aware of the actual quality levels of the castings procured by them which may not be the case of the people who do not have the facility to keep a close watch of such critical castings.

R&D CentreR&D centre is headed by a YH trained manager with 20 years of experience backed by a strong technical team of 45 members. R&D is equipped with the state-of-the-art CAD/CAM facilities. This centres' work stations are supplied by Hewlett Packard loaded on which are the SDRC Ideas Software for Design and FEM analysis. A photo of the valve undergoing FEM analysis is seen in the picture. This workstation is connected to PCs with Autocad Rel 14 on Windows NT network. This workstation is directly connected to a CNC machine supplied by HEYLIGENSTAEDT, Germany, for computer aided manufacturing. Bellows sealed valves developed through inhouse R&D was awarded the Import Substitution Award by the Government of India for 1990-91.

TestingThe Quality Assurance and Inspection Standards adopted by us conform to the latest international standards and all the products moving out of Palakkad plant bear a stamp of high degree of quality and reliability. Excellent test facilities are available where hydrostatic testing of large size valves can be conducted with ease. Many of these test facilities include presses, providers apart from variety of fixtures, test flanges designed

and manufactured over the years. Some of the special tests conducted by us/facilities include dynamic response testing, helium leak testing, radiographic inspection, ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing, CV test etc.

FCRIAdjacent to ILP, Fluid Control Research Institute (FCRI) has been set up with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funding to provide measurement standards in Fluid Flow and related areas for the efficient operation of National and International trade. Flow measurement in all industries is a key constituent of quality, safety and efficiency and plays a critical role in custody transfer and fiscal metering of fluids. There comes the importance of authentic flow reference system. This R&D Institute was set up by ILP and facilities are available to ILP for carrying out independent testing and calibration. This is one of the unique Institutions in the whole of South East Asia. Services rendered by FCRI include Calibration of flowmeters, Testing of control valves and other flow elements, Calibration/Testing of instruments with traceability to national standards for ISO 9000 certification, Assessment of flow measuring methods, Training programmes for technical personnel, Research and development/prototype development/consultancy, Software for flow meter/valve selection and design.

TrainingWe provide both theoretical and practical training on sizing, selection and application engineering of control valves and field claim and abatement techniques etc. in our full fledged training department. Products of ExcellenceLarge size soft seated butterfly valves Conforming to American Water Works Association Standard, these valves are the best choice as isolation valves for water and gas applications. Ensuring bubble tight closure, due to soft seating, these are available in wide range of size up to 2600 mm and materials to suit any process requirements. These valves can be actuated manually, electrically or pneumatically with facilities for remote operation. Optionally fitted with automatic trip mechanism, they function as emergency shut-off valves. Low noise valve The low noise cage type control valves are featured with very low operating noise (aerodynamic noise) when they are used to handle compressive fluids, such as steam, air fuel, gas, ethylene gas, etc. The cage and valve plug are of multiple hole construction. The components " restriction", "divergence", "expansion" are laid out in a rational manner to accomplish low noise pressure reducing action. Valve plug is designed to produce no torque vibration. Valve plug is held directly inside the cage to resist vibration and wear. The modular concept in design and construction allows component interchangeability with those of the VDC cage valves. Thus, valves can be

disassembled and reassembled resulting in quick maintenance, and minimising down time. Bellows sealed valves Escape of radioactive or toxic fluids to atmosphere is highly hazardous to the environment. These valves are specially designed to prevent such escape by provision of bellows seal with backup gland and leak off connection. To ensure high reliability in any adverse working conditions these valves undergo very stringent quality checks complete with well documented reports right from the raw material stage-stretching throughout the various stages of manufacturing activities till despatch . Control valves for high pressure drop service-model VHD Control valves used in feed water lines for duties, such as boiler start up, feeder water pump re-circulation, water injection for de-superheater, etc. experience large pressure drops. Cavitation generated during throttling will cause severe problems such as erosion, vibration and noise. The newly developed model VHD is designed so as to divide a large pressure drop into many stages by the special construction of the plug and cage, thereby preventing occurrence of cavitation. The distribution of pressure is made effectively according to the characteristic of the process and the static pressure in the throttling region is kept above the saturated pressure.

Thus IL has proven capability of executing not only new Power Projects but also in upgrading of the old C&I system with the State-of-the-art technology. For the large projects IL has supplied DDC System of world-renowned manufacturers like ABB, Siemens and Max Controls. Steel Plants: We are the only Indian company to have the privilege of supplying &executing the C&I jobs on turn-key basis in almost all the steel plants. IL has done automation job for various mills like Blast Furnace, Coke-Oven Battery, Slab/Strip/Rolling Mills, Wheel & Axle Plants, and Captive Power Plants of Steel Plants. IL has supplied DDC system of world- renowned manufacturers to these plants. For small systems PC based system with single loop controllers has been supplied.

Other Process Industries: IL has supplied & executed C&I jobs on turn key basis inOil Refineries, Cement, Paper, Fertilizer plants etc. In addition to Turn-key jobs IL has been doing retails product sale through Marketing Division and has supplied various types of Instruments to Industry. TELECOMMUNICATION

After serving the Process Industries with C&I systems it was but natural for the IL to diversify into area of Telecommunication to serve the Nation in more effective way. Information technology and communication are being the most promising area of business. IL therefore entered into technical tie-up with Center for Development of Telematics (CDOT), a Telecom Technology Center of Govt. of India for its switching products. Instrumentation Limited has been pioneer in manufacturing and servicing of Telecom switching equipments since 1988. Beginning with 128P RAX (Rural Automatic Exchange) catering to needs of Rural Areas, it has gradually evolved through medium size exchanges (256P RAX, 512P SBM RAX) to current large size switches (Main Automatic ExchangeXL) appropriate for Urban and Metro (Central Office) Application. Presently IL is one of the major suppliers of C-DOT Digital switching systems in India and has supplied systems almost all Telecom Circle of DOT. Exchanges supplied by us are working satisfactorily at more than 300 locations. Supply statistics stand at about one million lines and Turnover figure of Rs. 265 Crores The present product range includes large size switches (MAX-XL), Remote Switches (RSU and RLC) for 2nd and 3rd level of Remote Switching and IVRS, MAX-XL is a Stored Program Controlled switch based on Time-Space-Time (TST) Switching technology and caters to maximum 40,000 lines and 5,000 trunks having both PSTN and ISDN (Basic Rate and Primary Rate applications). It can be used as integrated SSP (Service Switching Point) for IN (Intelligent Network) services and can cater to about 1,530 Access Network Subscribers on V5.2 Interface. Telecom Division boasts of nearly 200 highly skilled and trained manpower. The Division encompasses advanced PCB Assembly lines including conventional and SMT Assembly facilities. The System Integration Center of the Division has facilities for validation and testing of PSTN Lines, BRI and PRI and CCS7 links. It also hasin-house infrastructure for production of mechanical hardware for its switching products. IL has excellent facilities like fully equipped state-of-the-art Repairing Center for repair of Multi-layer PCB Assemblies comprising of EPLD and FPGA devices and 32 bit Microprocessors for C-DoT Technology Switches. Its Service Center has so far repaired more than 40,000 cards and is capable of repairing 1,000 cards per month. Experts undertake at short notice and at very competitive rates fault repairing/commissioning of exchange.
