Wheelspin 3 November 2014

It has been a truly hectic time over the last couple of months at North Shore. Getting our Summer Tarmac Twilight Rallysprint Series up and running and all of the organisation that goes with that has been truly challenging, but tremendously satisfying.

It has taken four years to get this off the ground, going back and forth with Sydney Dragway, CAMS, NSWE Sport and Rec. and the Western Sydney Parklands Trust. Finally a few months ago approvals were given and the Summer Tarmac Twilight Rallysprint Series was go.

An entry of 43 cars for the first event was outstanding and I am sure we will build on that over the next few months as the remaining five rounds of the Series unfold. I have to say a huge thank you to all the team who put in so much work and effort to make the event happen including Col Fletcher, Russell Dixon, Brett Middelton, Michael Kent, Phil Morley, Brett Wright, Scott Fletcher, Tom Quirk and Margaret and Ross Middleton to name but a few, well done, without you the first event would not have been such a huge success.

Congratulations to Neal Bates who swept all before him in the inaugural rallysprint in his ARC winning ST205 Celica partnered as usual by Coral Taylor, they beat home David Finnimore in his Evo 9 Lancer with Steve Marlin taking third in his Evo Lancer. Molly Taylor partnered with Adrian Coppin

Of course the Rallysprint Series is a Single Club event to minimise the fuss and red tape and that has obviously seen an influx of new members to the club and we welcome all of you. We hope you enjoy North Shore as much of the rest of us do and with a mass of new members we hope a few of you will also get involved with our other events and in 2015 we will have a range of motor sport events including our Tarmac Twilight Rallysprints in January February and March, around four or five khanacross events at Colo, a DRS rally round at Hampton, our premier rally, the Rally of the Bay on 11 July and somewhere in there we want to have a supersprint at the new Luddenham circuit in Sydney’s West. It will be a busy year but will be the biggest for NSSCC in many years.

At our September meeting we were regaled by Bruce Garland with his exploits in the last WA based Australian Safari. Bruce, along with another NSSCC member John Doble who co-drives for Steve Riley. Both Bruce and Johnny Doble had challenging events. It is no where near as tough as the Dakar Rally but it is still a

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Jon Thomson

very challenging cross country rally and we take our hats off to the effort those guys put in.

I had the pleasure of spending two weeks in the bush with Kumho tyre engineers testing and evaluating a new off road mud terrain tyre the company is launching around the world and in Australia next year. A couple of weeks out there make you realise just how big a country Australia really is and how tough it is on every component in the vehicle, from the driveline to the body and most particularly the tyres. They take a beating from the stones, the washaways the rocks and the mulga roots. Fortunately we did not have a single puncture during our 4500km trip around north western NSW from Bourke tot Tibooburra, up into Queensland across to the Strezlecki track and to Innaminka before heading south into the Flinders Ranges and back to Broken Hill before a dash back to Brisbane.

Well done to one of our junior club members, Kris Muller who had the opportunity to travel to Melbourne in the recent school holidays to be a part of the CAMS young driver development program. A promising khanacross driver, Kris has battled hard to get some recognition for gravel driving specialists in the development program and this is a focus that we will be pushing hard with CAMS. Without some focus on

this Australia will continue to struggle to have real contenders in the World Rally Championship. Lets hope CAMS can see through the dust and give rallying hopefuls a leg up.

A couple of days after the Rallysprint I had the real pleasure of attending the fantastic Motorclassica in Melbourne . This is Australia’s biggest classic car Concours d Elegance filling the beautiful Melbourne Exhibition Buildings with a myriad of delightful cars and motorcycles from across the ages. It is a mighty show and the outside grounds are filled with an array of car club’s and their cars . Out of the blue and quite unexpectedly I was blown away when North Shore club member and former NSW Rally champ Miles Sandy’s name was called out as a class winner with his beautiful 1971 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 taking the floret for best Modern Classic Euro against a brace of other Ferraris, Maseratis, Jaguars, Astons, Porsches and the like. Well done Miles.

Well that's about all from me for this month. Unfortunately I can’t make it to our November club meeting I have a family event to attend but looking forward to seeing you all at the next Summer Tarmac Twilight Rallysprint at Sydney Dragway on Thursday 20 November.

In the meantime take it easy and enjoy yourselves.

Wheelspin 4 November 2014

Has it really been 20 years since I was last a member of NSSCC ?

I don’t think there is such a thing as a former rally driver, it is just that people sometimes go on a long transport stage. It never really leaves your mind for long, the thrill of competition and the friendships forged in the forest always stay locked away in the back of your head, and quickly come forward when you read, see or hear a real rally car. At the end of 1995, I sold my trusty 1600 after securing a NSW Rallysprint PRC Title, and basically went on a long transport stage for 10 years until I got my hands on a Evo 6 RS and did numerous tarmac events around Australia. A light roll over heading up Mt Buller saw the end of that car, and along came a nice

DAVE FINIMORE REFLECTS ON THE SUMMER TARMAC TWILIGHT RALLYSPRINT

Evo 9 RS a few years ago which has only done 1 tarmac rally and the occasional hillclimb.

When I saw that NSSCC had got the Day-Night Rallysprint up and running, it was time to rejoin the Club and it really was great to see a few familiar, if slightly weathered, faces in the crowd at the 1st Round. I sure look forward to catching up more over the Summer as well, as the Club holds many great memories for me as a young guy back in the early 90’s, I never missed a monthly meeting at the Golf Club for about 5 years.

It wasn’t without a slight bit of irony that at the 1st Round I got 2nd to Neal Bates and Coral Taylor…..It was seeing Neal in his 1600 take on the big guns in the Alpine

that got my blood pumping, and then seeing the great era of Neal v Possum in the 90’s that kept me inspired to compete. In the last few years Neal and I became friends and always enjoy a good chat about rallying over the years and how things have changed, both good and bad, and it’s especially great to see he and Coral back in that magic GT4 once again.

From the first stage the GT4 pulled 3-4 seconds on me, and that gap remained constant on each run as we slowly lowered our times into the night. I thought I might have been able to close the gap a little on the last 2 stages as the dark hit hard and Neal had no driving lights, whereas I had grabbed some small LED’s the day before, however that confidence was soon zapped when he casually walked over to tell me his time, which was a 2.04 versus my 2.07. I reckon he would have pipped me with no lights at all at that point !

Also great to see such a range of machines come out and support the concept as well, and judging by the crowd of interested spectators, these events should easily sell out going forward. Sitting behind both Richie on rally tyres and the Kaplans in their HSV tyre shredder added to the fun of the night for me, along with seeing Ric’s Mini in the flesh. With so many cool cars having a run, the Club is on a winner, so a big congratulations go to Thommo, Brett and the many others that are part of making this all happen!

Can’t wait to do it all again next month.

It’s good to be back…. Dave Finnimore

V8 Supercars has refined its formats with the goal of maximum attack and multiple race winners with the release of the 2015 racing calendar.

Building on a season where all manufacturers and multiple winners featured, V8 Supercars has made minor modifications to formats which include two signature events returning to their customary race distance.

The Castrol Townsville 400 returns to its original 200km race format each day. The Clipsal 500 Adelaide and Sydney 500 at Sydney Olympic Park retain the 2x125km Saturday format, as daytime races.

The ITM 500 Auckland has returned to its traditional November date as a SuperSprint event.

The New Zealand event moves into a critical stage of the Championship immediately following the Pirtek Enduro Cup, into a clear sporting space and an ideal weather period. Across the year there will be eight SuperSprint events that include two SuperSprint races on Saturday and the 200km Sunday race that featured this year.

The sharp Saturday sprint races are designed to encourage drivers to attack by alleviating the need to be conservative while trying to maintain tyre life. “Our research shows that the existing formats have been highly successful,” Warburton said.

“The emphasis was on improving the racing product, and giving drivers the opportunity to attack at all times without external factors preventing them from being aggressive.”

Each SuperSprint event will include 120 minutes of Friday practice to incorporate team testing. Teams will be able to test at these eight SuperSprint events with one discretionary private test.

“It made sense that instead of testing away from the fans to combine Friday practice and allow teams the ability to adopt testing procedures as required,” Warburton said. “That achieves two key objectives: more V8 Supercars on track for the fans and reducing the high costs to teams of testing away from race meetings.”

Warburton confirmed that there would be no international events outside of New Zealand in 2015, but confirmed interest was high in several countries, with Asia the focus for 2016.

Network Ten will televise a one-hour highlights package of the SuperTest on Sunday afternoon.

“It is a grand season opening launch, the style of which has never been seen

in our sport,” Warburton said. “It’s about giving the teams more time for the most important test of the year and at the same time allowing maximum interaction and engagement with fans.”

The Sunday SuperShootout will feature each car, driver and team against each other across a shootout lap, pit stop for tyres and a closing lap, with the fastest time winning the contest; as a pointer towards the best prepared teams ahead of the 2015 Championship opener.

The 1960s were special times for Australian Motor Sport when our circuits and those in New Zealand reverberated to the sound of the 2 ½ litre Tasman openwheeler racing cars.

The original Tasman Cup attracted the best cars and drivers from around the world to compete against each other and the best both Australia and New Zealand had to offer. It was a time when the likes of Clark, Stewart, Hill and Rindt lined up against the local drivers of the calibre of Brabham, Gardner, Geoghegan and Matich. Tasman Cup meetings also contained races for the full range of competition cars including sedans,

HSRCA TASMAN REVIVAL MEETINGsports racing, sports cars and other open wheelers.

Since 2006 the Historic Sports and Racing Car Association of New South Wales has recaptured those iconic days from the ‘60s with the Tasman Revival and will be doing the same over the weekend of November 29-30 with the holding of the Tasman Trophy at Sydney Motorsports Park. As with the original Tasman Cup there are cars and drivers coming from the UK, US and New Zealand as well as races for sports cars, sedans and sports racing.

The HSRCA is keen on sharing the excitement with all CAMS affiliated clubs

on the East Coast of Australia and invites club members to the Tasman Trophy. Those members who arrive in marque cars will be admitted free of charge with only passengers being asked for the price of admission.

Five out of five is a good score in any game, but particularly when it means the whole team has crossed the finish line after the gruelling 2014 Australasian Safari cross-country rally.

Sydney-based Isuzu Motorsports, run by North Shore’s own Bruce Garland, took out three class wins in the seven-day event which covered more than 3000km of the Western Australian outback.

Another North Shore member John Doble took Third outright co-driving for Steve Riley in the wild off road Holden Ute after leading for much of the cross country rally.

WA’s Adrian Di Lallo and co-driver Rodger ‘Roj’ Pedersen were the best placed of the three official Isuzu Motorsports entries, their production-class Isuzu MU-X wagon in fifth outright and first in class in their home state event.

‘Roj’ Pedersen said the final day of the event was the toughest stage of the week.

“Two kilometres into the stage we lost four-wheel-drive and it was pouring with rain and muddy. Bucketing down and really hard going. We brushed a tree and got lost – so did most others actually – and we lost a lot of time trying to find the right way, but we made it.

“I feel really good now, you know, tired, but it's a great feeling to finish Safari. Sitting next to Adrian, and the whole experience, it’s been awesome.”

Thailand’s Olan Sornsirirat and Veerachai Thorangkoon – the third team in the official ‘Isuzu trio’ – were second in class behind Di Lallo and Pedersen, and seventh outright in their D-MAX ute.

Team leaders Bruce Garland and Harry Suzuki came in 17th and took a class win, despite missing two full days repairing their Dakar-spec Isuzu D-MAX (and being handed extra time penalties for failing to finish those days).

Their car was halted by an electrical fault 37km into Day Three while running in fourth place. Aside from the strong results posted by the official Isuzu Motorsports entrants, the two other Isuzu crews being helped by the

ISUZU MOTORSPORTS CELEBRATES ‘FAMOUS FIVE’ AS THE WHOLE TEAM COMPLETES 2014 SAFARI

Garland/Suzuki team have also come home well.

“We’ve ended up with a really great result with the team, and all the cars went really well – it’s just a fantastic feeling,” says Garland.

“Today was unbelievable with the rain bucketing down. A whole lot of us got lost and then Steve Riley [who had been leading the event] got stuck in a ditch and a bunch of us helped pull him out. We got soaking wet and covered in mud, but we still had a good time. That’s what Safari is all about.

“All of the Isuzu Motorsports vehicles were better off than so many of the others. They were all slipping and sliding all over the place today, or getting punctures all the time in the rough stuff, but our Toyo tyres do the job for us, no matter whether it’s wet or dry.”

Competitors tackled three stages today, taking them from Exmouth – the

gateway to the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area – to Carnarvon, where the Gascoyne River meets the Indian Ocean, around 900km north of the West Australian capital of Perth.

The 2014 Australasian Safari kicked off in Perth, with a ceremonial start, on Friday night 19 September and full competition began in Geraldton, 424km north of Perth on Sunday, 21 September.

Open to cars, buggies, bikes and quads, only 20 of the original 35 starters in the car category completed the course.

Isuzu Motorsports is a performance parts company owned by Garland and his long-time co-driver, Harry Suzuki. They also have support from Isuzu operations in Japan, Thailand and Australia, and from Toyo Tires, Royal Purple Oils and Disc Brakes Australia.

OVERALL RESULTS AFTER DAY SEVEN

1. David McShane / William Hayes – Toyota Tacoma – 26:17:25

2. Greg Scanlon / Liam Nunns – Nissan Patrol – 27:25:48

3. Steve Riley / John Doble ( North Shore member) – Holden VF – 27:35:03

17. Bruce Garland / Harry Suzuki ( North Shore members) – Isuzu D-MAX – 53:03:18

North Shore Sporting Car Club member and Internationally renown rallydriver Molly Taylor has been forced to stand on the sidelines as friends and rivals competed in the last few rounds of the World Rally Championship.

The 26-year-old Sydneysider was due to compete in the junior category of ADAC Rallye Deutschland in August , as part of a six-event rally program this year, but ran out of funding. The situation was made even more disappointing because of the third place she took in the JWRC during the Neste Oil Rally Finland three weeks ago, her best-ever result in the world championship series.

“We’ve worked so hard this year and overcome so many problems, even during the event in Finland, that to be right on the pace and grabbing a podium finish was just the most amazing feeling,” Taylor says.

“I was so looking forward to going to Germany with the extra burst of confidence that you get from a strong result, but there just wasn’t enough funding there to do the job.

“Naturally I’m incredibly disappointed that I couldn’t be there battling for another podium, but I’m determined that this is not where it ends.

We’ve accomplished so much this year and I honestly believe there is a lot more in me. I just have to find the money to make it happen.”

The event in Finland was round eight of the 13-round WRC series for 2014, but

NORTH SHORE’S MOLLY TAYLOR IN FUNDS CHASE FOR REMAINING WRC ROUNDS

the third event this year for the world’s number one female rally driver.

She is contesting the junior WRC category in a Citroën DS3 R3T run by D-Max Racing, an Italian company which manages motorsport programs across Europe for customers driving Citroën rally cars.

Aside from Rallye Deutschland, Taylor was due to contest Rallye de France-Alsace in October and Wales Rally GB in November, but is now back home in Australia trying to raise enough money for Rally GB and for 2015.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped me make it to this point – the CAMS Foundation, Speedie Contractors, MIS Motorsport, D-MAX Racing, and

Adidas Eyewear – and all the supporters who have given me a boost to make it this far.

They have believed in me every step of the way over the last five years overseas and helped me chase my dreams.

“Now I must work as hard as I can to build on our result in Finland and take the next step forward. This is how I repay them for their faith in me. If that means I have to come back to Australia and knock on doors and work a couple of different jobs to make that happen, then that’s what I will do. For the moment, I’m continuing to work and talk with the team to see what we can get happening. I’m definitely not a quitter.”
