Join Mighty Writers to Break a World Record!
On Tuesday, July 26th, encourage children to join Philadelphia’s very own
Mighty Writers to raise awareness about the importance of education
and literacy levels! At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, about 3,000
students will come together to break the Guinness World Record for the
greatest number of people writing at the same place and time. This year
the topic will be, “If I were President…”
The event, also known as Mighty Record, is scheduled to take place from
10am to 12pm. There are only two requirements for signing up: 1) be a
Philadelphian, and 2) be between the ages of 7 and 17. Visit
www.mightywriters.org to register.
Welcome to the Summer Meals Program. We hope that the first week of service
is going well. If you run into any problems or issues, NDS is here for you! Don’t
hesitate to call us at (215) 895-3470, option 1.

Menu Spotlight
NDS has been working hard
to introduce foods that are
both healthy and delicious.
This summer, children will
see two types of hummus
during service:
Cranberry orange hummus
Harvest pumpkin hummus
Hummus falls under one of
our five vegetable
sub-groups. Legumes are a
good source of protein,
fiber, B vitamins, and more!
To keep lunches and
milk safe from animals
or pests, they need to
be at least 6 inches off
of the ground.
Cold foods need to be
at 41O F or below.
Refrigerators and/or
ice will keep meals
safe.
Be a Healthy Role Model for Kids
Adults play an important role in how children’s eating habits form. It’s important to set a good example– here are some tips as to how:
1. Show by example. Try new foods yourself, and take the time to describe texture and taste.
2. If shopping together, discuss different vegetable, fruit, grain and dairy products. Knowledge is power, and children will be more likely to make healthy choices.
3. Reward with attention, instead of food.
4. Encourage physical activity. Make it fun and interactive by involving everyone. Remember to use safety gear like bicycle helmets when necessary!

Students 9 years and older
Peace Contest Each summer, NDS hosts a creative writing and poster contest with the theme of peace. This theme is as relevant and necessary now as the first summer we introduced it. Please encourage the children at your site to carefully consider what it means to be peacemakers in their communities. Prizes will be awarded to entries judged as most thoughtful by NDS staff members.
Entries must be mailed or delivered to NDS by July 22nd, 2016.
They also must be submitted on paper with the child’s name, age, and the name of the camp on the back. All entries must promote peace!
Social Media Contest Last summer, sites submitted contest entries and then collected votes by earning “likes” on Facebook. Congratulations to Fatima Catholic Outreach Center!
