July 2019

“What a difference a year makes?” Those were the words spoken to me by Bishop Mike Coyner just prior to myordination…. Literally, just before he lay his hands on me to ordain me as an elder in the Indiana conference of the United Methodist Church in 2015. The prior year, I was unable to attend Annual Conference because I had just finished radiation and chemotherapy treatments and I did not have the strength to leave my house. Over the course of that year, I would continue my treatments, receive an “all clear” diagnosis, submit my ordination documents that equaled over 50 pages, successfully complete my interviews with the Board of Ordained Ministry, participate in three required leadership retreats, and continue to pastor a church in the midst of it all. “What a difference a year makes!”

Well, this month marks our one-year anniversary at Trinity. It has been a tremendous blessing to serve this congregation. Getting to know you, hearing your stories of faith, and walking with you through some of life’s struggles has been a joy. Thank you for the privilege of being your pastor! I continue to remain optimistic and excited about the future of our church. Even in the midst of internal struggles within the United Methodist Church, and even in the midst of political struggles within our country, I remain optimistic and excited because our God is faithful and our God is able to provide abundantly more than we could ever imagine!

I hope that you heard a consistent theme in my preaching throughout this past year. Hopefully, that theme was “a relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ!” We must cultivate this theme individually within ourselves, and we must boldly share this message with our community. I am convinced that God wants our church to grow! Not because God is concerned about numbers, but because God is concerned about people. Therefore, we must be concerned about people who are far from God. In the midst of divisiveness and uncertainty, people are starved for hope and they crave love. That is precisely what God offers through his church – hope and love!

Again, Dolli and I are so thankful that our journey in ministry has lead us to New Albany Trinity! We remain optimistic about the future of our church. The invitation extended by Jesus to his earliest disciples is the same invitation extended to us, “Follow me.” We may not always know where we are going, but we know whom we are following. God is faithful. Therefore, we expect great things and we are certain we will enjoy the ride!

Blessings,

Pastor Chris

Programming News

The Last Tuesday Book Club is reading Surviving the Angel of Death, by Eva Mozes Kor, for our July book selection. Eva Mozes and her twin sister, Miriam, were only 10 years old when they arrived in Auschwitz. Their parents and two older sisters were taken to the gas chambers and they never saw them again. Eva and Miriam were pulled out of line as were other twins and subjected to sadistic medical experiments by Dr. Josef Mengele. In this book Eva tells about all they went through, how they endured and managed to survive the evil Dr. Josef Mengele. Miriam died years later, but Eva is still living and wants her story to be remembered and has dedicated her life to giving testimony about the Holocaust, but also to provide a message of hope and forgiveness and peace. Eva Kor lives in Terre Haute, Indiana, where the Candles Holocaust Museum is located. You can learn more about the Museum on the website: CandlesHolocaustMuseum.org Some of you may have heard Eva speak at I.U.S about 8 years ago where her overriding message was: I will remain a victim of the Holocaust and Dr. Mengele as long as I don't forgive them, but if I can forgive them deep in my heart, I am no longer their victim.

Join us for discussion of Surviving the Angel of Death on July 30th at 10:30 in Room 7.

TRINITY SUMMER CAMPERS EXPLORE FUN ACTIVITIES!75 summer “campers” are exploring some new activities, as well as past favorites. The Carnegie Center came in June and taught all ages some new art activities. This month we will expect some surprises from the Louisville Zoo. New Albany-Floyd County Library sets up a book tent each Monday afternoon for young children in Trinity’s parking area. Children can take books home and join the Summer Reading Program. “Stretch-n-Grow” with Coach Natalie, “Drama by George” and the bounce houses are back, and of course, lots of water play outdoors!! Ms. Toni is introducing cooking activities and Ms. Lisa teaches about artists and their techniques with the older classes. We keep school skills sharp with lots of reading, writing and math games and activities. We are having a super summer with the fun-loving staff and students!! Summer is just not long enough for us!!

FALL PRESCHOOL BEGINS SOON!!Preschool teachers will meet July 31 to August 2 to start the year. Families with younger children are invited to meet their teacher the morning of Friday, August 2. A Family Orientation meeting is planned for Tuesday evening, August 6. We are still accepting enrollments if you know of anyone looking for a fun learning environment with very experienced staff! Children must be age 2 by August 1 to begin.

Pre-Kindergarten families who live in Floyd County can check out Indiana’s ON MY WAY PREK website to see if they are eligible for free pre-kindergarten. Clark County residents may apply with a paper application. The pilot program in 20+ counties will soon go statewide to ensure that every Indiana child has an opportunity to learn pre-kindergarten skills. Trinity Learning Ministry is approved as a provider for this program. Eligible children may attend full time or part time.

THANK YOU…• To the energetic and creative summer staff!• To Autumn Evans for leading the summer camp and planning so many fun activities!• To those who donated a total of $250 to our spring children’s mission project for Heifer International.

The children asked Heifer to use the donation towards a heifer, “so the hungry children will have milk”.
