MADE FOR Denotes a performance created
specifically for Dartington
I’m delighted to welcome you to the 2016 concert programme at Dartington International Summer School & Festival. By day, we run classes and courses where tomorrow’s young musical stars listen, learn, participate and socialise with music-lovers of all ages and backgrounds. In the early evening, Dartington transforms into a concert hall: we throw open the doors of the magnificent medieval Great Hall, and present concerts of all kinds of music, for everyone. From opera, jazz, string quartets, solo recitals, music theatre, poetry, to illustrated lectures, Brazilian rhythms, gospel, film music and choral music, there’s a vibrant sequence of live music events throughout the whole month of August, and a really festive atmosphere.
There are up to three concerts each night; you can enjoy world-class performances by world-famous musicians, in the beautiful setting of Dartington’s wonderful grounds. Come and join us!
Joanna MacGregor Artistic Director
Welcome
We celebrate Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary in style, with Stile Antico’s stunning madrigal concert and William Lyons and Peter Oswald’s exploration of Shakespeare’s theatre. There’s virtuosic Venetian music from Carole Cerasi’s delightful harpsichord, and the majestic glory of St Mark’s Basilica in Monteverdi’s Vespers. Enjoy the haunting art of Dowland with Emma Kirkby, The City Musick rollicking through German streets, The Brook Street Band on fire with Corelli, and Joanna MacGregor performing Bach’s life-affirming Well-Tempered Clavier.
Innovative creativity abounds this week, meshing improvisation, Arabic culture and medieval literature. Experience late night poetry and jazz from Huw Warren and Alice Oswald; a rare performance of Terry Riley’s In C; Stevie Wishart’s Transients; and Middle Eastern sacred music, lullabies and love songs, led by the Lebanese master Abdul Salam Kheir. All this and folk and fairy tales too, from Marina Warner and Simon Armitage.

Week 3 offers the fantastic chance to hear the world’s greatest pianist Alfred Brendel lecture on Beethoven’s last three sonatas, and display his legendary wit by introducing one of his favourite films, Woody Allen’s Zelig. The music programme has plenty of Beethoven too, from piano sonatas, late string works, symphonic and concerto works, with an array of superb soloists: the cellist Adrian Brendel, violinist Chloë Hanslip, pianist Florian Mitrea, and the scintillating Škampa Quartet. South American music weaves its way through the week, with the incredible Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale, Lithuanian accordionist Martynas Levickas, and a Tango Ball.
Music theatre takes over too – with a witty new show about Dorothy Parker, and a fast-paced, new production of The Pirates of Penzance. Don’t miss our final choral concert – Haydn’s mighty Nelson Mass paired with Shostakovich’s terrific Piano Concerto No.1.

“Dartington is an unrivalled festival of music-making, the creative arts, and learning in a magically beautiful setting. For over 60 years young musicians, celebrated virtuosos and passionate amateurs have come together to learn from each other, to create and perform new work, interpret gems from the classical, folk, modern, and jazz repertoires, as soloists, in ensembles, in choirs, and orchestras, lead by artists of international repute. The result is a programme of unparalleled inventiveness and quality, firing new works and artistic

partnerships, which develop and mature far beyond the Festival.
Our Friends lie at the heart of this alchemy. Priority bookings, a vibrant social network, and opportunities to mingle with scholars, music lovers, and artists from around the world, are all part of the experience.
I urge all those who love Dartington as much as I do to join so together we can continue the invaluable contribution Dartington makes to our cultural life.”

Ambassadors ProgrammeIndividuals and corporates able to invest annually at higher levels have access to bespoke opportunities to enjoy the world-class programme of music and arts during the Summer School & Festival, and invite and extend social, philanthropic and business networks. These will be discussed with those interested on a case-by-case basis.
“I give to the Dartington Summer School because I love it. I love the place, I love singing in the choirs; I love the quality of teaching, and meeting world-class performers over a drink or meal; I love the Great Hall and its wonderful acoustics, in which I have enjoyed astonishing numbers of world-class concerts. I have directed substantial support from Charitable Trusts to it. I want my personal gifts to encourage others to give so its magic never fades and goes on for others to enjoy.” Richard Creed, Ambassador
Leave a Legacy: Create Lasting SupportThe Dartington International Summer School Foundation is an independent charity dedicated to building an endowment to ensure that the annual programme is sustained for future generations. The charity promotes a legacy programme to which we invite your commitment and generosity to ensure the future of this unique and inspiring work.
“For me Dartington was a wonderful chance to reconnect with why I love music and why I am a musician” Anna, Singer
