SIM Unit Organizer—June 11th, A123 Presented by Becky Barrett, Region 13 The Unit Organizer Routine is used to plan units and then introduce and maintain the big ideas in units and show how units, critical information and concepts are related. Research results showed that when teachers used the Unit Organizer Routine, understanding and retention of the information by low-achieving students, students with learning disabilities, and average-achieving students improved substantially over baseline as reflected in unit test scores and in scores on unit content maps and explanations of these maps. Students of teachers who used the Unit Organizer Routine regularly and consistently scored an average of 15 percentage points higher on unit tests than students of teachers who used it only irregularly.

Guided Reading & Literacy Stations—June 12th, A148 Presented by Dafne Stengel and Teresa Conner You asked for it… here it is! Come for a learning filled day of instruction. In the morning session, the focus will be on Guided Reading methods for the teacher. Return for an afternoon, which covers literacy stations, and instructional activities that will keep students learning while you are teaching Guided Reading. By the end of the day, you’ll be able to use new ways to teach guided reading as well as have new ideas for literacy stations for your students.

Learn all about how meaning, structure, and visual cues reveal what information your students are using (or neglecting) in reading.

CSCOPE Balanced Literacy Institute—June 19th-21st, A148 (K-5) Presented by Dr. Richard James, Region 10 What does a classroom look like that supports a balanced literacy framework? This institute will give teachers, new to Balanced Literacy, an overview of each framework component and information on how each component is integrated into the CSCOPE curriculum. The gradual release model of instruction will be demonstrated and participants will be introduced to share reading, word study, independent reading and writing, guided reading, and literacy centers. Brain Friendly Reading Comprehension—July 11th, A148 Presented by Dawn Osbourne, Region 10 With the increased level of reading comprehension required on the new STAAR, it is more important than ever that we arm our students with deep reading comprehension strategies. This workshop will focus on supporting teachers as they learn strategies that help students learn to deeply comprehend in a way that the brain naturally learns. These methods are highly motivating and proven affective. The workshop is for grades 3-12 and recommended for all content areas. Lessons for Growing Writers—July 23rd, A123

Presented by Brandy Kerbow Teaching writing in the primary grades can be a daunting task that requires unique skills and understanding of writing development. In the workshop Growing Writers, participants were introduced to general concepts of writing development, classroom organization, and writing processes that can be used to help students become skilled writers. In this workshop, participants will engage in specific lessons designed to be used within a workshop model. We will explore the importance of talking and drawing in the development of beginning writers as well as

how current children&166;s literature can be used as mentor text to develop concepts of organizational structure, idea development, and use of language and conventions. While this is a wonderful follow-up to Growing Writers, participants need not have attended it to participate in this workshop.

Science and the ELPS—July 23rd, A148 Presented by Region 10 Educators will develop a common understanding of utilizing the ELPS as a tool for formative assessment and how it is implemented in the classroom. Focus will be placed on effectively using the ELPS as an instructional tool to measure what students think and know throughout the instructional period, not just at the end of a unit of study. Teachers will be able to adjust instruction based on this important feedback from students. PBIS: Effective Implementation at the Classroom Level—July 24th, A148 Presented by Randy Sprick All teachers want their students to be orderly, responsive, engaged, and motivated. According to the most current research on teacher effectiveness, putting a successful behavior management system in place is a sure way of achieving these goals. During staff development sessions, teachers will learn how to:

• Establish a vision for their classrooms • Organize classrooms for student success • Prepare for the first month of school • Specify classroom behavioral expectations • Motivate even the most uncooperative students • Monitor and revise classroom behavioral plans • Correct specific misbehaviors

Write From the Beginning Update: Narrative Writing—July 24th A123 Presented by Laura Blalock Using the WFTB Program, this will be a refresher for the WFTB process for Kindergarten through 4th grade, along with the most current updates. This one-day session will focus on using Thinking Maps and the WFTB process to guide students in producing effective narrative writings. Even if you haven’t had WFTB training, this is a good opportunity for you to learn the WFTB process. You will NOT want to miss the one-day session on Expository writing either!

Write From the Beginning Update: Expository Writing—July 25th, A123 Presented by Laura Blalock Using the Write From the Beginning Program, this will be a refresher for the WFTB process for Kindergarten through 4th grade along with the most current updates. Bilingual Learning Centers—July 30th-31st, A148 Presented by Gomez & Gomez The purpose of this training is to provide participants with a deep understanding of the design and management of BLCs to maximize student learning, language development and support core instruction. The training focuses extensively on Make-n-Take activities. This training is designed for bilingual teachers grades PK-2.

SIOP: It makes sense! (K-6)—August 7th, A148 Presented by Laura Blalock This one day session will clarify all of those acronyms that can be overwhelming (ELPS, TELPAS, SI, PLDS, ELLs). You won’t have to guess what those mean anymore! You’ll walk away with authentic examples and activities that will bring you classroom alive for ALL students, and it will give you some answers on what to do to assist your English Language Learners.

**STAAR 3DX: Accountability, Assessment, and Action—August 8th-9th Presented by Ervin Knezek We now have two years of data! STAAR 3DX is an extended (“X”) version of STAAR 3D. This session extends the learning about data decision-making and is designed to provide school leadership teams with strategies on how to take an in-depth view of the data. In this workshop you will: Read, Interpret, analyze and apply STAAR data; Gain clarity on the new accountability system; Understand the challenges relating STAAR and students with special needs; Organize and establish priorities **Principals will select participants for this session.
