Even more important, we believe that our faith is developed – both as children and adults – through conversation. Quite simply, when we are faithfully engaged with one another, we learn and grow in faith. So this summer we want you to be able to grow in your faith by being in conversation with one another. Through our ministries you’ll find a variety of things that will help you engage in faith as a family like a variety of faith growing, intergenerational activities. You can take “Summertime Jesus” with you throughout the summer. We also post our sermons and weekly devotions on our website so that you can watch, listen and receive God’s word on the road and discuss as a family. We read in Micah 6:8, “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” What does this mean? Well, that the most faithful of us don’t need to do huge and great things, but really to continue to make God the center of our lives and family. Given all the planning that goes into a summer, why not also make an intentional plan for times to unplug, converse and learn from one another – especially about the faith that is truly the center of who we are. a monthly publication of Sheridan Lutheran Church July 2015 During the week of Memorial Day, Sheridan offered Camp Heart & Soul, a music and drama camp for 1 st -12 th grade students. We’ve all seen it, whether on vacation or in daily life, families being together while also being very separated by gadgets. We see families driving on the interstate, many with headphones and others looking

off in the distance, surrounded by their own thoughts. We see groups at a restaurant, all with faces down and eyes locked on a screen. Sadly, we seem to talk less with one another and engage less with the world.

At Sheridan, we want to help. We believe that the healthiest families are those who regularly engage with one another in loving and skillful ways.

Current Worship Series: Generating GreatnessWhat does true greatness look like? No matter what the venue – sports, business, or social – the true nature of greatness is hotly debated. We have a cultural fascination with greatness, and so many strive for individual success. We want to be great; but to what end, and to what purpose?

It seems that each generation looks at the next generation and questions them – their values and abilities. Moreover, each generation sees the shortcomings of those who have gone before and tries to approach life to compensate for the needs they see in the world. Who knows what is best?

This summer we are reflecting on Biblical values that point to greatness. We are touching on how these values can be lived well. We will work on appreciating how faith is shared between generations. We will also see how our faith grows when generations both give and receive from one another.

What is Abiding Month? Jesus tells us in John 15 that abiding in him is the best way to bear fruit. As we strive to be disciples of Jesus, we want to follow his example of regular times of rest and time abiding in God’s presence.

July is Abiding Month at Sheridan. This means a minimum scheduling of programming and meetings so staff can use time to abide in Christ for rest and renewal. Abiding gives us concentrated time receiving power and strength from the Father, renewing our call in this world. Worship, both corporate and individual, is a priority during this time as is time in prayer and in God’s Word. We encourage everyone to be intentional in renewing your soul and spirit during July. We start again from this place of rest, and return with renewed creativity and energy for God’s work at Sheridan and in the community.

Confirmation Ministry 2015-2016

Confirmation registration form live July 1Info: sheridanlutheran.org/middle-school-confirmation

We have enhanced our Confirmation ministry for 2015-2016 to give 6th-8th grade students greater ownership in their Confirmation experience and to grow deeper in their faith as individuals and within the community. Beginning fall of 2015, we will offer two different types of classes – core classes and elective classes.

Core classes will build on the strength of the ministry. Students will learn in both large group and grade level small group formats.

Elective classes will be classes the student, as an individual, choose to attend. Each student will have a variety of class options to choose from and will need to register for these elective classes between July 1 and August 15.

Searching for Small Group LeadersInfo: [email protected] school is a tough period of life made even tougher these days

because of the impact and pressures of social media. Against this reality, Sheridan Lutheran Church receives a rare gift each Wednesday, through our Confirmation Ministry. We get the privilege of reminding them that in their baptisms they are named and claimed by God and nothing in all creation will be able to separate them from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

As we prepare for the new year of confirmation, we ask you to discern if God is calling you to walk with a group as a Confirmation small group leader. If you do feel called, or if you want more information please contact Pastor Michelle Oetken.

Local Ministry Update: Barnabas Meals

page 6 | missions and outreach

ELCA Global Hunger Grant Benefits Barnabas CommunityInfo: [email protected]

As our work and service continues at Barnabas Community, our staff of volunteers noticed a pattern that was happening at the end of each month. People were hungry. For many of our guests at Barnabas, hunger is a real issue. Guests often come into the Barnabas Community Center depending upon the cookies and treats provided to be a meal for that time of the day. Many guests rely upon the help of SNAP and our Sunday food distribution through Foodnet. Even with the help of these programs, the end of the month is a struggle for many to make ends meet.

Out of this need was born the idea to host a meal at Barnabas Community on the last Thursday night of the month. The Barnabas Store & Community Center are already open and guests know about our services typically offered this night. Why not offer a free, healthy meal to complement our services and meet an unfulfilled need?

Through our greater church relationships, Barnabas Community and Sheridan received a $1,000 grant to kickstart this meal ministry. If you would like to support this ministry, please make checks payable to Sheridan Lutheran Church, Memo: Barnabas Meal. Thanks to our Nebraska Synod and ELCA partnerships that are helping us launch this new ministry to fight hunger in our community of Lincoln!

Noisy Offering: God’s Global Barnyard – One Farm purchased – One Farm To Go! In partnership with Lutheran World Relief, our noisy offering has provided a family with all it needs to have a healthy farm for $715! A cow, a couple of goats, a dozen chicks, two pigs, and farming tools, plus agricultural training and marketing support can help a family achieve a fresh start. With new tools and techniques, crops will grow bigger and stronger than ever before. Eggs, milk and meat from farm animals will provide enough food to eat and sell on the market, helping a family escape the cycle of hunger and poverty — for good.

With noisy offering giving trends, this summer, we can provide one more farm before our children are back to school! Thanks Sheridan children and families for your generosity! Praise God!
