In addition to his writing prowess, his skills as a performer and storyteller are unmatched. He holds audiences rapt with nothing more than a single guitar, thoroughly written songs, a fearless ability to mine the depths of human emotions of joy, sorrow and everything in between, all tempered by a quick and wry wit. Reflecting on well over 20 years of record-making and touring extensively around the US and world, Wilcox says, “Music still stretches out before me like the head-lights of a car into the night. The band program consists of two high school concert bands, jazz bands, percussion ensemble, an indoor drumline, an indoor color guard, and a marching band. The band program has been named a Virginia Honor Band for the 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013 school years after obtaining superior ratings in both its Symphonic Band and Marching Band programs during state and district assessments. See the HBO series “Treme” for more details on the culture of Mardi Gras Indians, whose history dates in the Crescent City from 1885. Cha Wa means “We’re coming for ya!” It’s a slang phrase used by every Mardi Gras Indian tribe. The band features legendary Mardi Gras Indians Irving “Honey” Banister and J’Wan Boudreaux on vocals and Kerry “Boom Boom” Vessell on bass drum, along with New Orleans music veterans Joe Gelini on drum set, John Fohl on guitar, Bill Richards on bass, and Steve Malinowski on organ. If you find yourself on the corner of Second and Dryades on Mardi Gras Day, you will hear “Cha Wa” chanted in celebration. June 17 City of Fairfax - Concert Band (Concert Band) Founded in 1969, the City of Fairfax Band is one of the area's best-known community ensembles, bringing enjoyment to audiences of all ages with pop-style concerts of light classical, Broadway, jazz, film and patriotic music. June 20 The Cathedral Brass (Symphonic Brass) The Cathedral Brass is a symphonic brass ensemble that performs an eclectic mix of popular hits from all eras. June 20 The Capital Focus Jazz Band (Youth Jazz Band) The Capital Focus Jazz Band is the Youth Learning Program of the Potomac River Jazz Club. Since 1988, this nationally acclaimed program has provided promising young musicians with a grounding in the fundamentals of jazz, as well as specialized training in the traditional New Orleans styles and their offshoots. The Capital Focus Jazz Band learning program was formed to continue the legacy of such giants of American music as Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Sidney Bechet, and Jack Teagarden. June 21 The Brother Brothers (Appalachian, Folk, Bluegrass) Their sound is striking and undeniably captivating. Often leaning towards the darker elements of Appalachian folk and bluegrass traditions, their songs are laden with near-perfect sibling harmonies or unison singing, compelling writing, and imaginative arrangements. They tour as an acoustic duo: David on cello and guitar, and Adam on the 5-string fiddle. With individual music careers under their belts, the brothers have teamed up to bring their experiences together. June 21 Karikatura (Transglobal Soul) Karikatura makes life-affirming, body-shaking music that moves people around the world. While the band has toured everywhere from Japan to Brazil, New York City is home. With bright horns, socially conscious lyrics and booty-bouncing beats, Karikatura delivers real songs that transcend style and genre. An organic synthesis of all the music heard blasting out of car windows and shops onto the streets of NYC, Karikatura lives where cumbia meets hip-hop, reggae meets klezmer and indie-rock meets Afrobeat. Neither purist nor revivalist, this is music of the present, for the future. The band just released its debut full-length album, “Eyes Wide”, on Ropeadope Records, following up two EPs and DIY tours of Europe, Asia and South America. June 23 Don Vilanova with Bruce Ewan (Blues, Rock) Guitarist Don Vilanova and harmonica player Bruce Ewan have toured together many times in Argentina, Chile and the US. In 2002, they recorded “LIVE IN RIO IV Argentina” and recently collaborated on a concert tour of Argentina, performing on Fox Net show, one of the highest rated TV programs in South America. Don Vilanova is one of the most beloved and respected blues/rock musicians in Latin America. He has toured extensively across the globe. Phil Wiggins & Rick Franklin (Piedmont Blues) Harmonica player, songwriter and music director Phil Wiggins is regularly ranked in the Living Blues Reader’s and Critic’s Polls as one of the top harmonica players in traditional blues.
