2017 WITHOUT WALLS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED2017 WITHOUT WALLS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED
La Jolla Playhouse announced the performances for their 2017 Without Walls
Festival of immersive and site-specific work, running Oct. 19-22. Co-founded by
BA Alumnus and MFA Design Faculty Professor Robert BrillBA Alumnus and MFA Design Faculty Professor Robert Brill,
Sledgehammer Theatre will present Charles Mee’s Under Construction: An
American Masque, directed by BA Alumnus Scott Feldsher BA Alumnus Scott Feldsher and produced in
association with UC San Diego’s department of theatre and dance at the Bread &
Salt art gallery. Set in a banquet hall, the work will contain a collage of America
today. Other performances will include work by Mimi Lien, Trisha Brown Dance
Company, and Gob Squad.

JIHAE PARK AND ANDREA STOLOWITZ NAMED NEW DRAMATISTS RESIDENCIESJIHAE PARK AND ANDREA STOLOWITZ NAMED NEW DRAMATISTS RESIDENCIES
New Dramatists, an artistic home and developmental laboratory for professional playwrights, has
announced the addition of eight writers to its resident playwright company. Two of the writers are UCSD
alumni, MFA Acting alumna Jihae ParkMFA Acting alumna Jihae Park and MFA Playwriting alumna Andrea StolowitzMFA Playwriting alumna Andrea Stolowitz. The
New Dramatist writers will be in-residence for seven years, through the year 2024. These supremely
talented theatre artists were selected by a seven-person committee of New Dramatists current residents,
alumni, and outside theatre professionals from 415 applicants after undergoing a highly competitive,
nine-month consensus based evaluation process. New Dramatists will kick off their seven-year
residencies with an evening of readings and celebration at the annual New Playwright Welcome in the fall.

CHAO-YU TSAI WINS PRIZE FROM WORLD STAGECHAO-YU TSAI WINS PRIZE FROM WORLD STAGEDESIGNDESIGN
MFA Lighting Design alumnus Chao-Yu Tsai MFA Lighting Design alumnus Chao-Yu Tsai has been
awarded the Silver Prize in Lighting at the 2017 World Stage Design
awards. He received the award for his work on Rhinoceros at UCSD
which can be seen below.
MFA Scenic Design alumnus Zhao MingshuoMFA Scenic Design alumnus Zhao Mingshuo was also named a
finalist in the Scenic Design category for his work designing the sets for
Rhinoceros. Congratulations to both of them.

KARL GA JDUSEK SCRIPTS NEW SCI-FI FILMKARL GA JDUSEK SCRIPTS NEW SCI-FI FILM
MFA Playwriting alumnus Karl GajdusekMFA Playwriting alumnus Karl Gajdusek has recently sold a new script
for a sci-fi show to Fox for production. Karl most recently worked as the EP
for Stranger Things and his additional movie credits include Oblivion. Michael
Ellenberg will produce in the first film deal for his new Media Res banner.
Matt Reilly brought in the project for Fox and will shepherd it. The show's
story is being kept under wraps, but it’s said to be a character-based sci-fi
drama in the vein of Inception and Edge of Tomorrow.

MFA Playwriting alumnus Mat Smart 'sMFA Playwriting alumnus Mat Smart 's new play, Kill Local, is currently
in rehearsals at La Jolla Playhouse. The production is directed by Jackson Gay and
opens August 1st. MFA Stage Management alumna Laura ZinMFA Stage Management alumna Laura Zinglglee is the
Assistant Stage Manager and two current MFA students are doing their
residencies on the production, MFA Stage Management student KassonMFA Stage Management student Kasson
Marroquin Marroquin and MFA Scenic Design student Samantha Rojales MFA Scenic Design student Samantha Rojales.
Sheila and her sister Abi work for their mother's small family business. Sheila's
job used to be a source of joy and exhilaration; now she's questioning everything.
But when you're an assassin, being uninspired means getting sloppy, and getting
sloppy means getting killed. Kill Local is a pitch-black comedy about blood ties,
revenge and trying to get unstuck - especially when your life is dedicated to
ending others'.

The Kilroys, a group dedicated to transforming gender parity in the national theatre, released their annual
2017 list of new plays. This year's list was of the 37 most recommended un- and underproduced new
plays by female and trans authors of color according to a national survey of theater artists. MFAMFA
Playwriting alumna Lauren YPlaywriting alumna Lauren Yeeee topped the list with the two plays which garnered the most
nominations, Cambodian Rock Band and The Great Leap. MFA Acting alumna Ngozi AnyanwuMFA Acting alumna Ngozi Anyanwu was
the only other author to also have two scripts make the list, The Homecoming Queen and Nike Or We
Don't Need Another Hero. MFA Playwriting Alumna Caridad SvichMFA Playwriting Alumna Caridad Svich and current MFA PlaywritingMFA Playwriting
student Anna Moenchstudent Anna Moench both had scripts listed among the Honorable Mentions.

CHRIS MEDVITZ DESIGNS E3 EXPO IN LOS ANGELESCHRIS MEDVITZ DESIGNS E3 EXPO IN LOS ANGELES
BA alumnus Chris Medvitz BA alumnus Chris Medvitz designed the lighting for Nintendo's
installation at this year's E3 expo, the annual gaming and electronics
conference. He designed the installation with his company light switch and it
was one of their largest installations yet.

BA alumna Monica Bill BarnesBA alumna Monica Bill Barnes was named by Dance Magazine as one of The Most Influential People
in Dance Today. They cited her hit collaboration with "This American Life" host Ira Glass which mixed
dance with radio-style storytelling, and her Happy Hour series which embraced the idea of an office-
party-meets-karaoke-meets-dance experience. She is a frequent collaborator with MFA Scenic DesignMFA Scenic Design
alumna Kelly Hansonalumna Kelly Hanson and currently is performing a series of Museum Workout physical tours of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art to unanimous acclaim.

Minneapolis' Mixed Blood Theatre has announced their 2017-2018 season of
productions. Leading off their season is MFA Playwriting alumnus Will MFA Playwriting alumnus Will
Snider 'sSnider 's play How to Use a Knife which will be directed by MFA DirectingMFA Directing
alumna Jesca Prudencioalumna Jesca Prudencio. The play premiered at the 2016 Wagner New Play Festival
and will open in Minneapolis on September 29th. Mixed Blood Theatre is run by Jack
Reuler, a longtime friend and former teacher at the department.

MFA directing alumnus Adam Arian MFA directing alumnus Adam Arian has written and directed a new film,
OFFLINE, which had its festival premiere at the Brooklyn Short Film Festival
last week. OFFLINE also starred MFA acting alumnus ZachMFA acting alumnus Zach
Martens. Martens. Adam has continued his acting work as well, with a guest star role
on Law and Order SVU's final episode a couple of weeks ago.
MATTHEW WILDER TO DIRECT NEW FILMMATTHEW WILDER TO DIRECT NEW FILM
MFA Directing Alumnus Matthew WilderMFA Directing Alumnus Matthew Wilder will direct Regarding the Case of
Joan of Arc, an indie movie which retells the Joan of Arc story within the world of
an alt-right terrorist seeking to attack America who is put on trial inside
Guantanamo Bay. The script was co-written with MFA Dramaturgy alumnusMFA Dramaturgy alumnus
Michael McClungMichael McClung and will star Orange Is the New Black star Taryn
Manning. The film will begin filming this summer and is expected to premiere in
2018.

Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. He and
Lauren have premiered the play across the country and the
production in Los Angeles runs through August 6th. There is a

MFA Playwriting Alumna Caridad Svich's MFA Playwriting Alumna Caridad Svich's CARTHAGE/CARTAGENA was
recently seen at Oxford Playhouse in England on July 7th, 2017 in a
production from disability arts company Signdance Collective International.
The production will transfer to New York City and perform at TheaterLab on

MFA Playwriting alumna Lauren Yee's MFA Playwriting alumna Lauren Yee's new play In A Word recently
closed at Cherry Lane Theatre in New York after a run which met with rave
reviews. The production was directed by Tyne Rafaell and was named a
nytimes critics pick. In a Word recently won the Francesca Primus Prize for an
outstanding play by an emerging female playwright.

BA alumna Michele Apriña LeavyBA alumna Michele Apriña Leavy is appearing in Ghost Limb, a new play by
Marisela Treviño Orta which opens tonight at the BRAVA Theater Center in San
Francisco. Set in Argentina during the period of State terrorism of the 1970s and
80s and riffing on the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter, Ghost Limb tells
the story of los desaparecidos—the disappeared of Argentina—and the mothers
who fiercely protested the military dictatorship who took their children.
