SUMMER NEWSLETTER: JULY DEPARTMENT NEWS 2017 WITHOUT WALLS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED 2017 WITHOUT WALLS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED La Jolla Playhouse announced the performances for their 2017 Without Walls Festival of immersive and site-specic work, running Oct. 19-22. Co-founded by BA Alumnus and MFA Design Faculty Professor Robert Brill BA Alumnus and MFA Design Faculty Professor Robert Brill, Sledgehammer Theatre will present Charles Mee’s Under Construction: An American Masque, directed by BA Alumnus Scott Feldsher BA Alumnus Scott Feldsher and produced in association with UC San Diego’s department of theatre and dance at the Bread & Salt art gallery. Set in a banquet hall, the work will contain a collage of America today. Other performances will include work by Mimi Lien, Trisha Brown Dance Company, and Gob Squad. ALUMNI NEWS JIHAE PARK AND ANDREA STOLOWITZ NAMED NEW DRAMATISTS RESIDENCIES JIHAE PARK AND ANDREA STOLOWITZ NAMED NEW DRAMATISTS RESIDENCIES New Dramatists, an artistic home and developmental laboratory for professional playwrights, has announced the addition of eight writers to its resident playwright company. Two of the writers are UCSD alumni, MFA Acting alumna Jihae Park MFA Acting alumna Jihae Park and MFA Playwriting alumna Andrea Stolowitz MFA Playwriting alumna Andrea Stolowitz. The New Dramatist writers will be in-residence for seven years, through the year 2024. These supremely talented theatre artists were selected by a seven-person committee of New Dramatists current residents, alumni, and outside theatre professionals from 415 applicants after undergoing a highly competitive, nine-month consensus based evaluation process. New Dramatists will kick otheir seven-year residencies with an evening of readings and celebration at the annual New Playwright Welcome in the fall. CHAO-YU TSAI WINS PRIZE FROM WORLD STAGE CHAO-YU TSAI WINS PRIZE FROM WORLD STAGE DESIGN DESIGN MFA Lighting Design alumnus Chao-Yu Tsai MFA Lighting Design alumnus Chao-Yu Tsai has been awarded the Silver Prize in Lighting at the 2017 World Stage Design awards. He received the award for his work on Rhinocerosat UCSD which can be seen below. MFA Scenic Design alumnus Zhao Mingshuo MFA Scenic Design alumnus Zhao Mingshuo was also named a nalist in the Scenic Design category for his work designing the sets for Rhinoceros. Karl most recently worked as the EP for Stranger Thingsand his additional movie credits include Oblivion. Michael Ellenberg will produce in the rst lm deal for his new Media Res banner. Matt Reilly brought in the project for Fox and will shepherd it. The show's story is being kept under wraps, but it’s said to be a character-based sci-drama in the vein of Inceptionand Edge of Tomorrow. Kill Local is a pitch-black comedy about blood ties, revenge and trying to get unstuck - especially when your life is dedicated to ending others'. MATTHEW WILDER TO DIRECT NEW FILM MATTHEW WILDER TO DIRECT NEW FILM MFA Directing Alumnus Matthew Wilder MFA Directing Alumnus Matthew Wilder will direct Regarding the Case of Joan of Arc, an indie movie which retells the Joan of Arc story within the world of an alt-right terrorist seeking to attack America who is put on trial inside Guantanamo Bay. The script was co-written with MFA Dramaturgy alumnus MFA Dramaturgy alumnus Michael McClung Michael McClung and will star Orange Is the New Blackstar Taryn Manning. The lm will begin lming this summer and is expected to premiere in 2018. MICHELE APRIÑA LEAVY IN SAN FRANCISCO WORLD PREMIERE MICHELE APRIÑA LEAVY IN SAN FRANCISCO WORLD PREMIERE BA alumna Michele Apriña Leavy BA alumna Michele Apriña Leavy is appearing in Ghost Limb, a new play by Marisela Treviño Orta which opens tonight at the BRAVA Theater Center in San Francisco. Set in Argentina during the period of State terrorism of the 1970s and 80s and ring on the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter, Ghost Limbtells the story of los desaparecidos—the disappeared of Argentina—and the mothers who ercely protested the military dictatorship who took their children. MFA directing alumnus Adam Arian MFA directing alumnus Adam Arian has written and directed a new film,

OFFLINE, which had its festival premiere at the Brooklyn Short Film Festival

last week. OFFLINE also starred MFA acting alumnus ZachMFA acting alumnus Zach

Martens. Martens. Adam has continued his acting work as well, with a guest star role

on Law and Order SVU's final episode a couple of weeks ago.

MFA Directing Alumnus Matthew WilderMFA Directing Alumnus Matthew Wilder will direct Regarding the Case of

Joan of Arc, an indie movie which retells the Joan of Arc story within the world of

an alt-right terrorist seeking to attack America who is put on trial inside

Guantanamo Bay. The script was co-written with MFA Dramaturgy alumnusMFA Dramaturgy alumnus

Michael McClungMichael McClung and will star Orange Is the New Black star Taryn

Manning. The film will begin filming this summer and is expected to premiere in

2018.

recently seen at Oxford Playhouse in England on July 7th, 2017 in a

production from disability arts company Signdance Collective International.

The production will transfer to New York City and perform at TheaterLab on

MFA Playwriting alumna Lauren Yee's MFA Playwriting alumna Lauren Yee's new play In A Word recently

closed at Cherry Lane Theatre in New York after a run which met with rave

reviews. The production was directed by Tyne Rafaell and was named a

nytimes critics pick. In a Word recently won the Francesca Primus Prize for an

outstanding play by an emerging female playwright.

BA alumna Michele Apriña LeavyBA alumna Michele Apriña Leavy is appearing in Ghost Limb, a new play by

Marisela Treviño Orta which opens tonight at the BRAVA Theater Center in San

Francisco. Set in Argentina during the period of State terrorism of the 1970s and

80s and riffing on the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter, Ghost Limb tells

the story of los desaparecidos—the disappeared of Argentina—and the mothers

who fiercely protested the military dictatorship who took their children.
