Happy Summer holidays everyone! We’d like to start

with aplogising to the newest members who might not

they distribute the members list to us and there were a

lot of teething problems with the new system which

meant we didn’t have access to any new member details

for quite a few months. I can only apologise and hope we

can make up for it now!

Next up, a little update following the Blairgowrie

AGM in May. We had a cookery demonstration from the

lovely Gill Marzak from Glutafin, who showed us how to

make some of her favourite Glutafin recipes.

We also had a small talk from Dietitian Fiona

lots of different products and to make the most of your

The committee members were all happy to continue

for another year so that will stay the same. Over the last

few years we’ve done quite a bit of fundraising so it was

suggested to donate some of these funds to Coeliac UK.

We discussed it with the members at the AGM and it was

decided this figure would be £1000.

by Caroline McKenzie - Tayside Nutrition MCN

Manager

I thought it might be helpful to give you an update as to where we are with the development of the hopsital food menu that I am uncertain what to call!

I am sure you will remember that a few of the members of the group put their names forward to help improve the eating and drinking experience for those coming into NHS Tayside hospitals with Coeliac Disease. This resulted in a few conversations and a visit to Ninewells Hospital and one of the most important improvements you wanted to see was the development of a menu for those with Coeliac Disease. As a result the NHS Tayside Menu Review Group has developed a menu and this has been sent out to some of the members in the last month for their comments. I just wanted to say a BIG thank you to all who commented, again your feedback is so important and as a result we have made some changes to the menu and are just finalising some of the finer detail before we implement it.

One of the major changes to the menu included having to remove all pulse based soups from the menu. One of the members queried that some pulses even although they were gluten free could still be contaminated and when I investigated this the manufacturers could not guarantee they were gluten

free. As a result we have developed an array of soups which are suitable and which sound delicious such as tomato & courgette and carrot & orange.

The name of the menu is causing a little issue though and I would welcome your thoughts on this plus I will speak to other colleagues in other hospitals for advice too. To call the menu ‘gluten free’ the food would legally have to have less than 20 parts per million of gluten and to be ‘very low gluten’ the food would legally have to contain between 21 and 100 parts per million of gluten. I chose to name the menu ‘no gluten containing ingredients’ as it isn’t covered by law, none of the ingredients contain gluten and processes have been put in place to avoid cross contamination.

What do you think? I would really like to hear from as you to what you think we should call the menu plus maybe information we should provide to assure those with Coeliac Disease that the food is safe to eat.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Tayside Gluten Free Food Scheme It is hard to believe that the summer holidays are

upon us again. If you need information regarding suitable gluten free foods when abroad Coeliac UK have information on 35 countries in their “Holidays & Travel” section on their website. If you can’t access the internet they can also give advice via their helpline on 0845 305 2060. Gluten-free-onthego.com is also a source of information for several countries including the UK.

Finally our mailing is ready to be sent out. So your updated food list should be dropping through your door within the next few weeks. It will also include a flyer on the app as detailed above.

Tayside Gluten Free Food Microsite NHS Tayside has developed an on-line system for

you to order your gluten free food prescriptions and it finally went live in the spring. It can be accessed through any electronic device where you can get onto the internet. For example, a computer, smart phone or tablet. Many libraries also have computers and printers available to use. The system is designed to make ordering simpler and easier:

1. It calculates your units 2. Searching for items can be done visually, by food

group or by manufacturer 3. It creates your order form which you can then

print out or, in selected community pharmacies,

can be emailed directly to them (please speak directly to your pharmacist to see if this facility is available)

You can still use paper based ordering if you prefer. Scottish Gluten Free Food Service

It has taken us a good bit longer than we had hoped to get our database updated. The new registration forms as mentioned in the last newsletter are now being sent out to pharmacies. Hopefully the last will be sent out by the end of June. Look out for your pharmacist asking you to sign these forms.

Please keep me updated with any views on products (Prescribable and available to buy), places to eat out and any hints and tips you feel are worth sharing. [email protected] 01307 475228

EVENTS 2014

I’ve had a couple of comments in recent months asking

why we don’t do more in the outer areas of Tayside, eg

Pitlochry, Crieff, Montrose… For those that don’t know

we have tried this over the last couple of years, and

indeed many times before with previous committees,

and they just don’t seem to get the support from local

people. It means one of us (the committee) having to

come up/down from wherever we live for a just a couple

of people, who most of the time are travelling there

from Dundee or central Tayside anyway! I’d be more

than willing to put in the effort of organising these if I

knew they would be supported, so if anyone has any

ideas how we can do this better please get in touch I’d

love to hear from you. We’re doing the Christmas Bring

‘n Share in Pitlochry so please please come out and

support us

Here’s what we have planned for the rest of the year,

updates will be added to the website:

https://www.coeliac.org.uk/local-groups/tayside/

- Bring ‘n Share Lunches

Saturday August 9th, 12-2pm – Dundee, City Church,

The Friary, Tullidelph Road, DD2 2PN. Time again for one

of our bring and share lunches, where members come

along with something they’ve made or bought that is

gluten-free and we all share this massive buffet. There is

usually more than enough food to go around so even if

you don’t have time to make or buy something please

come along and join us anyway. The more the merrier!

Page 3: Summer Newsletter - Coeliac UK€¦ · - Lorna, Dundee: Scott [s Butchers, Dundee. As well as a few other gluten-free products they have lorne sausage which is quite rare! COELIAC

Saturday 6th December, 12-2pm – Pitlochry, venue

TBC! If the weather happens to be bad, call Audrey on the

number above to check if it will still go ahead.

- Christmas Fair - 22nd November, 12.30-3.30pm, Scone

(Perth), The Old Parish Church, PH2 6LP. Join us for our annual

Christmas Fair where we all get together and chat gluten-free,

fun kids activities and crafty stalls, with the usual freebies from

the manufacturers. And lots of gluten-free food of course!

- Coffee and cake - 1st day of every month, 11am,

Blairgowrie, The Royal Hotel. A few locals meet up for coffee

and cake on the first of every month at the Royal Hotel. No

need to book, just turn up on the day and enjoy a nice informal

gathering with some fellow coeliacs whilst enjoying all the

gluten-free goodies that The Royal Hotel have to offer.

~ MEMBER’S FAVOURITE’S

We always try to list a few places that our members have

recommended for other Coeliacs, so here are the latest

ones. It seems like most of the recommendations are

coming from Dundee now, we would appreciate hearing

from some of the more remote towns so if you have a

local place providing gluten-free that you’d like to tell

everyone about please let us know!

- Wendy J, Dundee: Iced Gems, Broughty Ferry. They

have a range of gluten-free things to choose from,

including some lovely cakes!

- Wendy C, Dundee: Parlour Café, Dundee. Good home-

cooked food, always do a gluten-free soup as well as a

couple of other options, sweet and savoury!

- Lorna, Dundee: Scott’s Butchers, Dundee. As well as a

few other gluten-free products they have lorne sausage

which is quite rare!

COELIAC UK/OTHER NEWS - Freed From Campaign – Coeliac UK has just launched a

new campaign aimed at completing 7 goals in 7 years. Some of these are very ambitious, it’s a great reminder of the hard-work they are doing on our behalf. These aims are:

Earlier diagnosis Support after diagnosis that meets the needs of

all More affordable gluten-free food Food for a gluten-free diet that is easy to identify Gluten-free food in all stores More choice on menus Funding future research You can find more information about the new

campaign in the crossed-grain magazine or online.

- We’ve had news of a new food festival which some of our gluten-free manufacturers are attending. The ‘Eat, Drink, Discover Scotland 2014’ festival is on at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh on 12-14th September. Buy tickets online at a discounted rate of £10 with code EXHIB10 (courtesy of The Cookroom).

- We’ve recently been made aware of the need for gluten-free foods at the now infamous food-banks. If you like to support things like this, then please remember that there are also coeliacs that use these facilities and if you could spare a loaf of bread, or packet of biscuits then please pass them on to your local foodbank. Tesco Riverside in Dundee has a local collection box which is quite convenient, I’m sure some of the other branches might do it too.

This brings us to the end of the summer newsletter,

I hope it’s been informative for you. I always enjoy

your feedback so please do email with any

comments, eating out tips, event suggestions etc.

Have a great summer everyone!
