WELCOMEGuilford County Schools is excited to offer a variety of summer learning opportunities� The GCS Learning Loss Task force began to collaborate during the Spring of 2020, on how to support unfinished learning for all students due to COVID-19 for Guilford County Schools Students� The taskforce included families, students, staff, community partners, school board members and administrators� All team members participated in reviewing learning loss recovery research and best practices to recover unfinished learning for all students� During these collaborative meetings; the team used the guidance of legislation from Read To Achieve (SB 387) and Learning Recovery (HB 82) to make recommendations for creating the most inclusive summer learning programs� The team was laser focused on how to improve social-emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes due to the pandemic�

Summer programs will be a critical part of supporting students with learning recovery and acceleration� An essential goal of the GCS Learning Loss Taskforce included designing fun and engaging summer programming to meet the needs of all students in the district� This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the summer plans developed based on the input and recommendations of the Learning Loss Taskforce�

Guilford County Schools is optimistic that all students will participate in at least one of the summer programs� Our students’ social-emotional and academic growth were the most important variables considered when planning for summer opportunities� This book includes a comprehensive list of course offerings and the process for registration�

Registration is a commitment to participate daily during the full session length� Every effort will be made to grant you the needed course offerings� This will be a partnership with our pledged support for all GCS students� Attendance and participation in summer opportunities will be critical to academic growth and an integral part of the teaching-learning process� Parents and guardians are encouraged to report unanticipated absences to your summer school site teachers� An email or written note to your student’s teacher is preferred�

Families should contact their school to complete the registration process for all academic programing except Enrichment Camps�

Summer Offerings Information:There is no cost to attend academic summer programming� Camp fees are listed for each camp that has a cost� Scholarships are available for Summer Arts Institute� Payments may be made online to K–12 Payment Center https://www�k12paymentcenter�com/�

Transportation The district will be providing morning and afternoon transportation for all course offerings within your home

school zone or reassigned summer site� During the registration process, you will provide the specific address information for morning and/or afternoon bus transportation� Once bus routes are finalized, schools will contact families with the bus information prior to the summer opportunities start date� Contact the student’s summer location with questions or concerns related to transportation�

MealsStudents will be provided breakfast and lunch each day�

Individual Education PlansStudents with Individual Education Plans (IEP) will receive their support and services during summer programming�

504 PlansStudents who receive support through Section 504 will receive their entitled supports during summer programming�

Summer Programming by LevelsThe goal is for all programs offered to advance student growth in all content areas� The course offerings will include opportunities for ages 5–18� Students may participate in more than one summer opportunity� Each of the programs will be following current COVID protocols to keep students safe and healthy�

ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMIC PROGRAMMINGStudents that are below grade level are invited to attend summer enrichment at their current school site with a few exceptions� (See information below)� Each school will provide programs that will improve students’ social-emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes while participating in a positive classroom climate� Students in Grades 3–8 will have the opportunity to retake the End of Grade test (EOG) in Math� Students in grades 5th and 8th grades will have the opportunity to retake the Science EOG� All third-grade students not meeting grade level expectations in reading should plan to attend both three-week sessions� Third graders will retake the Read to Achieve test (RTA) at the end of the second session� Specific program details are listed below:

ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CAMPS Camps listed below listed below will have a separate registration and students will be contacted by the school site with invitation and registration information�

� Rising EL Kindergarten Camp This opportunity offers rising kindergarten students to improve their language acquisition and school readiness for 2021–2022 school year� Students will be informed by ELL department with an invite only� The focus will be for students who have not previously had an opportunity to participate in an educational setting� The clear focus for campers will reduce the gap in achievement due to language and lack of school experiences� Students will be participating in field trip experiences such as visiting the Natural Science Center and Children’s Museum and more� The Specific details are listed below:

� AG Explore CampThis opportunity is available for rising fourth- sixth grade students that have been identified for AG or Talent Development services� Students will explore high interest enrichment topics in core content areas to develop inquiry and investigative skills� Camp sessions will be taught by certified GCS teachers who are completing their AIG licensure at Duke University� Capacity is limited to 120 students� AG elementary teachers will communicate registration procedures to all eligible families� Specific details are listed below:

� First LEGO League DiscoverFirst LEGO League Discover is a playful introductory STEM program that ignites children’s natural curiosity and builds their habits of learning with hands-on activities using LEGO DUPLO bricks� Students document their journey, ideas, models, and STEM skills in their Engineering Notebooks� Finally, students build confidence sharing what they have learned at a final celebration� Throughout the experience, students operate under the FIRST Core Values, celebrating discovery and teamwork, all the while having fun!

This amazing camp allows students to develop ideas, work in groups, and pitch ideas where all voices are heard, and there are no wrong answers! Students begin to solve real-world problems through hands-on coding activities and challenges� K-2 students will begin to speak a coding language that expands their vocabulary and critical thinking skills – which is Literacy+� Coding makes learning STEMulating and fun!

�Middle School LEGO Robotics Camp The field of robotics is a fun way to introduce youth to mechanical engineering and computer programming� The world of robotics is a great STEM tool for students to bridge the gap between computer science and engineering� Join this LEGO Robotics camp to take part in an incredible learning experience in robotics engineering� Students will design and build robots using the LEGO Mindstorms system while learning how to incorporate motors, sensors, and the LEGO brick to build and design robots that can walk, talk, think, and do anything you can imagine�

� Virtual Summer Bridge Math CoursesThis course offering is for current AIMM or Math 7 students enrolling in NC Math 1 for the 2021–22 school year� Course work has been designed for students who are skipping Math 8 content to enroll in NC Math 1 in the upcoming school year� The focus will be on Math 8 standards that students will need to be successful in Math 1� Students will be required to take a final assessment at the end of the course�

HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC PROGRAMMINGAll comprehensive high schools will offer summer programming to support student learning in core content areas� The content areas offered will include Math l, Math II, English l, Biology, and others� High School students will have access to credit recovery courses� After participating in summer enrichment, students may re-take the End-of-Course (EOC) tests to improve scores� High school students can also complete assignments needed to pass a course� Specific programs details are listed below�

This opportunity offers high school students that were failing or had an “Incomplete” in a core class at the end of 4th quarter� Students can improve to a passing

grade (D)� The dates for current seniors will be different due to the graduation timeline for the 2021 cohort� The sessions will be three weeks long and will be dedicated to specific content areas for rising 10–12 graders� Students may participate in both sessions� Tutors will be offered for core content areas� Upon satisfactory completion of 5th Quarter, the student will receive a passing grade for the course� Specific details are listed below�

y Details: Seniors – must complete requirements before June 25 to graduate with their 2021 Cohort� Seniors who do not make the June 25 timeline, may complete graduation requirements July 1–15, and be considered as 2021 graduates, according to NCDPI�

y Dates: June 14–July 1 or June 12–July 29 y Time: 9:00am–1:30pm

5th Quarter for High School Early/Middle Colleges and Academies

Summer school opportunities for students that attend an Early/Middle College or Academy will be held at two different sites across the district�  Students will attend the site that corresponds to the student’s attendance zone high school�  See the chart below for the corresponding locations�

� AP Ready for Equal Opportunity SchoolsThis opportunity is offered to high school students participating in Advanced Placement classes (AP)for the first time that attend certain high schools� Students from EOS schools participating in the camp will receive a stipend for attendance� The camp will be one week in length and will offer course content and academic skills needed to thrive in AP classes� Specific details are listed below:

y Dates: Will be determined and communicated by each school (Monday – Thursday)

y Locations: Southern Guilford High School, Ragsdale High School, Western Guilford High School, Page High School, Northeast Guilford High School, Eastern Guilford High School, Dudley High School, Andrews High School, Southwest High School

� IB Ready CampThis opportunity will be offered to rising seniors who are currently on track to receive the IB diploma� The focus of the camp will be research and writing skills and completion of required IB components� The dates for this one-week camp will be determined and communicated by each school� Specific details are listed below:
