The minute Laura Diachenkohands Jack’s leash to Roger Wie-land, they are off on their dailyadventure at Cape Coral’s GulfCoast Village.

“Hi Jack,” an employee says asthe two amble down the hall.

Jack — a miniature Australianshepherd — stops, gets a tap onthe head and then he and Wielandare off to their next greeting atthe independent living andskilled-nursing facility.

They make a couple of morevisits before Wieland, 91, a retired

veterinarian, and Jack, 3, enter asitting Tai Chi class. The man whogave Jack a treat two days beforegets the first visit but within acouple of minutes, the pup hasgone from resident to resident tosay good morning. Not everyonepets him but most do. Whatevertheir mental condition, the resi-dents feel Jack’s presence andcalmness.

Then he goes next to Wieland’schair, lies down and takes — sor-ry, Jack — a cat nap.

How doesphysicaltherapy treatback pain?

Matthew ToomeySPECIAL TO THE NEWS-PRESS

While my wife and I attended a con-cert in Tampa, we listened to musicfrom the Doobie Brothers and Journeyand reminisced about listening to thegreat songs written by these talentedentertainers.

We were sitting in the last row of oursection and in front of us there were twowomen that appeared to be a motherand daughter. What struck me throughthe night was how the daughter, whowas probably in her 30s, grabbed hermother and hugged her; and then themother would put her arm around thedaughter and they would sway to themusic, obviously spending an enjoyableevening together. What a beautiful site.

In the past I have written about thehappiness factor. Research has shownthat happy people live longer and cer-tainly live better quality lives. Happi-

ness, often produced, produces pleasurehormones and chemicals in the brainthat benefit us at the moment of thepleasure. They also have long lastingeffects.

As I continued to look around at thethousands of people enjoying the con-cert, I realized that many were havingthe same experience. They were hug-ging, swaying and even dancing to themusic. It was wonderful to see friendsenjoying the experience of an outdoorconcert together, listening to music weheard as younger people and remember-ing our past.

Pleasurable experiences such as theseremind us of good times in our past whileproviding lessons for the future. Goodhealth is attained in many ways. I write alot about the benefits of healthy food andexercise. However, going to a concert, giving and getting hugs, and enjoyingmusic from our past can also promotegood health. The tip for the week is to gettickets to a concert; take a loved one withyou, listen to the music and give them ahug. Your health will improve with theexperience!

As I settled into myseat for a return flight toSouthwest Florida, athought occurred to me:Caregivers need to heedthis very same advicewhen faced with the seri-ous illness of a loved one.

Typically, when a care-giver calls Hope Health-Care Services, they havereached a point wherethey are emotionally andphysically drained fromthe stress of caring for aloved one. Meanwhile, theperson they are caringfor is typically in painand might even be at-tempting to minimizetheir discomfort becausethey don’t want to be aburden or a bother.

The situation can bestressful for everyoneinvolved. No matter howhard we try or how muchwe are committed – care-giving is often not a battlethat can be won alone.Caregivers need to re-member to take care ofthemselves first so theycan better help theirloved one.

There are no medalsfor caregiving. But thereshould be! Being a familycaregiver is one of thehardest and most thank-less jobs in the world. It’simportant to ask for thehelp you need – from otherfamily members, friends, neighbors, church mem-bers and community re-sources like Hope Health-Care Services.

Nearly every day atHope, I hear a caregiversay “I wish we’d askedfor help sooner.” HopeHealthCare Services isthere when you need helpand support. Much ofwhat Hope does is teach-ing – how to lift a lovedone, how to take a bloodpressure, how to schedulemeals to avoid nausea. Wealso help support care-givers and can help ar-range respite care so youcan take some time totake care of yourself, too.

It is also important toget the medical supportyour loved one needs.Hope can help there too.For those who are seri-ously ill, it’s never too soonto ask for relief from pain, breathlessness and nausea.

No one should sufferneedlessly. The Medicarehospice benefit is avail-able as soon as you needit. Across the nation, people are receivinghospice care for days, unaware they are entitledto six months of care. And, if after six months, you still need support, this care can continue.Right now, the hospicebenefit is utilized by only20 percent of Americanswho need it.

The hospice philoso-phy is to relieve suffer-ing, physically, mentally, spiritually and practical-ly. This care is intendedto make recipients com-fortable and help care-givers find the support togo on – both before andafter loss. Hospice careincludes art and musictherapies, spiritual andemotional counseling, massage, pet visitors, honor guard — all to pro-vide peace of mind and asmooth journey.
