County proceeds with wastewater plant expansionLINCOLNTON – Lincoln County is
ready to move forward with the expansion of its wastewater treatment plant follow-ing a public hearing July 15.
The hearing was required due to the county’s request for funding under the N.C. Department of Infrastructure, clean Water State Revolving Fund, a loan that will cover $14 million of the $26 million project, with an interest rate of 1.92 per-cent. Revenue bonds will be used to fund the remaining $12 million.
The design of the expansion, which will double the plant’s capacity, has been com-pleted. The plant is at 86 percent of its current capacity of 3.3 million gallons per day, and expansion is needed to support the numerous housing developments expected to be built in Denver in the coming years.
The county is also expanding its water treatment plant, and with a combined cost of approximately $40 million, coun-ty water and sewer rates are expected to continue an upward trend. Customer bills increased this summer and last, and one more increase is coming in July 2020.
Expansion of the wastewater treatment
plant is tentatively expected to be fi nished in April 2021.
In other county business, commission-ers approved two funding requests from the public works department.
The department sought approval to pur-chase a 2019 Mack Roll Off Truck that will replace a 2007 model that was wrecked in the past year. The $167,633.50 purchase was unanimously approved.
The board also unanimously approved a $7.8 million contract with State Utilities Contractors to extend the waterline that runs along N.C. 73.
In total, the project calls for a 24-inch line from Killian Creek to Ingleside Farm Road, a 16-inch line from Ingleside Farm Road to Lambs Way Road, a 12-inch line that will run along Ingleside Farm Road from N.C. 73 to Old Plank Road and a 12-inch line that will run along Old Plank Road from Ingleside Farm Road to the Duke Energy Lincoln Combustion Tur-bine Station.
“What we’re trying to do is improve the looping of our major water lines so that we have redundant ways of feeding the sys-tem if there’s a main break on N.C. 16,” Public Works Director Don Chamblee said. ❏
