Reading a Psalm (and actually getting something out of it)

Have you ever tried to have a devotional time and found yourself struggling

to figure out how it applies to your life? I sure have, and if you are anything

like me, I want to show you a tool that can help you grasp what God is

saying in His Word. It’s called SPECK, and it stands for the following:

Sins to Avoid

Promises to Claim

Examples to Follow

Commands to Obey

Knowledge of God

Here’s how it works: take a passage in your Bible—Psalm 23 for example—and ask the

following questions: What sins should I avoid according to this passage? What promises does

this passage give me that I need to claim? Who are the examples to follow? What does God

command in the passage? What knowledge of God’s character does this passage reveal?

As we read through Psalms this Summer, try the SPECK method. Here’s what you might learn

from Psalm 23, if you used SPECK:

It would remind you to avoid the sin of fear

It would remind you to claim the promise that even if you walk through the shadow of death,

the LORD is with you

It would remind you of the greatest example of someone who walked through the shadow of

death and still trusted God… Jesus, our good shepherd

It would remind you that God commands us to rest “in green pastures”

It would give you knowledge of God’s character: that He is our “Shepherd” who is willing to

use “his rod” if necessary, but always does so with “goodness and mercy”

Reading the Psalms like this, you may actually find yourself getting something out of it!

A fellow beggar telling other beggars where to find bread,

Dustin Jernigan

Missionaries of the Month

Dave and Marinajo Fields

Hospital Loma de Luz Honduras

Some ministry highlights:

• A very busy spring with lots of incom-

ing medical teams as well as a hospital

expansion construction project.

• Political unrest in Honduras with more than a month of protests (mostly

peaceful) and roadblocks.

• Several obvious spiritual attacks on the ministry here as well as on the

directors. Much much prayer about this by all missionaries

• Our son Ben will be moving to the US in June to start working and living in the

US full time! Our nest will be empty!

• A few health concerns for Marinajo, rapid heart rate and shortness of breath.

Tests continue, no diagnosis yet, symptoms seem to be declining, praise God!

• Very hot summer months with very little rain. We just received our first

measurable rain in weeks today! Thank you Lord!

Latest Update:

Dave and Marinajo continue to serve in various support roles in the hospital,

Marinajo in the eye glasses clinic and Dave in various technical support roles like IT

and Medical Equipment. They also invest a lot of time in hosting oncoming short

term medical teams and making sure that each team has a safe and productive

visit.

Personally, Dave and Marinajo are going through several life changes such as their

youngest son, Ben, moving back to the US to live and work as well as changes in

their support income. They have written a blog post detailing these changes which

you can read at fieldsinhonduras.com if you would like more information.

Dave and Marinajo wanted to pass on their deep gratitude for the support that they

receive from JPC (JPC is currently their largest supporter) and for the partnership in

ministry that we've shared now since 2009.

... from Pastor Richard

Dear Friends,

As summer continues through the month of July, we have some great ways to connect with God, each other and ministry. As always, I will take the summer months to thank and appreciate all the leaders of the Adult Ministries of our church.

I have already had the opportunity to meet with some “alarming” people. NO, they are not frightening or strange, these are those who answer the call when the alarms in our buildings sound out of office hours. This can be at very late or early hours, and these folk do so without complaining and with gracious hearts. They also have some interesting stories to tell. Over the next couple of months, I will connect with those who lead Small Groups of various types not only to review the year that has passed but also plan for the year to come.

As some of you know, I have been asked before as a “Brit” do we have 4th of July in Wales. Well yes I reply it is right between the 3rd and the 5th every year. However, as my adoptive country celebrates, we will take the time to give thanks to God for the land we live in and the people we live with. On Sunday July 7 we will gather for our Patriotic Hymn Sing at the Historic Church and worship together in the beautiful sanctuary. I want to encourage you to come and join us, whether you have been many times before or if this will be your first time to the Historic Church, let alone to the Hymn Sing.

Speaking of the Historic Church, I am truly thankful to the dozens of volunteers who will be at the Historic Church in teams of two during the summer to have the sanctuary open for quiet time and personal prayer. While we are experiencing Summer in the Psalms for our sermon series and devotional times, truly we are also experiencing the summer in prayer. Why not take time to visit and pray this summer? The Historic Church will be open Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 10am - 2pm until the end of August.

Every Blessing,

Page 4: Summer in the Psalms

Youth Ministry

The Middle and High School Youth Groups will be joining the church as it spends the summer in the Psalms. We’re excited to dive deeper into a few of the Psalms that we’ll be reading as a church. Luther called the book of Psalms a “Little Bible” because it contains the key doctrines of the Gospel within its 150 chapters. God’s justice, wrath, grace, and righteousness are all on display in the Psalter. Others have noted that the Psalms also contain the whole array of human emotions: grief, gladness, sorrow, joy can all be found within its pages.

Therefore, we’re excited to help our students read and love the Psalms.

Join me in praying for our students this summer—that their faith would grow by the Spirit’s power and that they would enter the school year convinced that Christ is worthy of their time, efforts, loves, and lives.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support!

Dustin Thompson

Thank you to everyone at Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. Whether you are a parent, volunteer, staff, or member, every one of you has shown nothing but kindness to me as I learn my role as director. Thank you for your encouragement and patience during this transition. I love working with and for you. One of my short comings is learning names. I am very slow at it. I desire to learn all of your names, and I will. One way you can help me learn your children’s names is making sure they get checked in and are wearing their tags. I realize this system is new and has not always worked efficiently. Hopefully, we have worked out the technical issues with the system. Please introduce yourself to me as you are returning your claim tag at pick up. I, not only want to know your children, I want to know you! Don’t be shy and don’t be afraid to interrupt our class. I encourage parent involvement. I am looking forward to connecting with all of you. On July 7, I will be hosting a Parent Connection time. It will be held between services in Room 202 in the Education Building. During this time we can get to know each other, and I will have the time to answer questions. Hope to see you there! Blessings, Michelle Wallman

“My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations” (Isaiah 56:17) Pastor Dustin read this verse from Isaiah at the May 23rd Orientation for the Volunteers who will be helping keep the Historic Church (HC) open to the public this summer. We thank God that the volunteer schedule has been completely filled and that our HC is once again ‘a house of prayer’ for residents and tourists through August. The Sanctuary’s open hours are 10 am to 2 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. JPC members and friends are encouraged to stop by the HC this summer for a personal time of quiet prayer and reflection. We pray that ‘all nations’ will enter the HC through August and find it offering them a quiet time for personal prayer. Will you join us in praying for the Lord to be very present and personal to many ‘seekers’ this summer?

From your Prayer Elder:

James 5:16 - "--The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." Prayer is a "two-way" street. Read Genesis 18:22-32. The power is not in the prayer, but who we pray to! Let's allow God Almighty to work His power thru us.

To God be the glory! Amen. God bless you all, Al Schloesser, prayer elder

HONDURAS MISSION TRIP 2019 OCTOBER 11 — OCTOBER 19

This year we will again send a team to Belfate, Honduras to the Cornerstone Foundation Mission at Hospital Loma de Luz.

Some of the team will be familiar to you, while others are joining the trip from outside our church bringing their unique and much needed skills and experience.

The team will be supporting and supplementing the medical work of the hospital, fitting in and helping with any ongoing construction and repair work, feeding missionaries and the team, and pastorally caring for all they come into contact with, as well as renewing old friendships and building new ones.

Your prayer and financial support is invaluable in getting the team there. Our church is supplying $5,000 in financial support. The team members are expected to raise as much as possible towards the total budget of over $20,000. Each member contributes at least $1,600. They each seek support from friends, family and work colleagues to secure both monetary do-nations and supplies necessary to make the trip a success.

Returning team members are:

Dr. Rich Owens will perform a number of surgeries alongside the medical staff of the hospital.

Pastor Richard Evans will be team leader and “general dog’s body”. He will help in various ways and also serve communion.

Lane Roelle is a skilled X-Ray tech and will assist as the operations take place to “see” what is going on.

John Wiley will bring his experience of prosthetics to the table as this is a much needed area of expertise at the hospital.

Mark Offord brings his past experience in Honduras construction and will head up our builders and fixers.

First time team members are:

Lori Tapp, a nurse, is new to the fall team but has been on the February trip. She will fit right in alongside the surgical team.

Julie Hubbard will be invaluable as the team cook. She will be feeding and caring not only for the team but many missionaries we will serve and care for on the trip.

You can follow the team at www.jvillepres.org/blog or www.facebook.com/jvillepres

The team will take all their personal items as carry on. That way, all checked bags will be used to transport hospital and other supplies. A list of needs for donated items will appear soon. As always, your prayer support is needed and appreciated.

Blessings, Honduras Mission Team

From Janet Christian– KPL Facilitator… Hello church family! I wanted to take a moment and thank the church for opening it’s doors to me and Kaleidoscope Play and Learn. This is a weekly, free, drop-in (NOT drop-off), preschool playgroup for caregivers and their children, 0-5 years. Southern Oregon Early Learning Hub hired me to facilitate parents getting their children ready for Kindergarten, along with providing opportunities for moms and dads to connect with each other. We have had many families join us who are new to Jackson County. Our average group consists of about 10 moms, 1 dad and 13 kiddos, ages ranging from 1-4 years of age. We do this every Wednesday from 9:00-10:30 am in room 202 in the Education Building. Grace Point Church of Medford has also opened it’s doors to us as well. I am there Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-2:30 and Thursdays from 10:00-noon– lunch included! The groups are open to anyone in the community caring for young children: parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, neighbors and friends. Older siblings up to 8 years of age are welcome to attend as well. Help spread the word and thank you for your prayers! (Note: we will not be meeting on July 3rd– Happy 4th of July!)

Your Mission Team will be collecting VERY gently used clothes and new packages of underwear and socks from now until Sunday, August 19. We will be assisting with a clothing drive in Gold Hill at the Kids Day Event put on by Gold Valley Fellowship. The children served are in desperate need of clothes. Since we are a church full of families with kids, what better and easy way to help them by donating what your children no longer use? The clothes needed are sizes 5-14, with no rips, holes or stains. Each week there will be a bucket in the back of the church for donations. In addition, we will need volunteers to help sort the clothing and take part in the event which will be held on Saturday, August 24 at Patrick Elementary School in Gold Hill. What a blessing it is for both giver and receiver to participate in this ministry. As you do your spring cleaning, please check to see if you have any gently used clothes you would like to donate to a child in need.

For more information, please contact Sherry Watson at 541 890-6973.

She says, “I always joke that God knew how bad off I am, so much so that he had me marry a pastor.” She is so incredibly grateful the Lord called her family to Jville Pres!

Nathan is a 21 year old college student studying elementary education at Biola University. He started attending JPC with his family when he was 5, and he joined the worship team when he was 12. Since then, he has been actively involved in the worship team and the children’s program here at the church. He truly came to know Christ when he was 15 years old, and he is excited to see how Christ is going to work more through this church.

Linda was born in Queens, NY. She was married for 5 years and has 2 daughters. Divorced in 1974, she moved to the West Coast in 1979. She became a born again Christian in 1983 and attended Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa with Chuck Smith as her pastor. She married Dan in 1987. In March 2019, Dan passed away after a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Linda met Mike O’Brien while putting her RV on consignment, and he invited her to JPC. She has been very blessed to find a church where people are so loving and welcoming.

Edwin, son of a logger, grew up in the small town of Winlock, WA. God was always in his life as a child. But, after seeing a close friend’s dramatic restoration, at 19, Edwin committed his life to Jesus. God then sent him to electronics school in Beaverton, OR where he worked for Tektronix, Inc for 20 years in many different positions. He now works for Xerox as a Computer Systems Solution Architect. Renee is from the Central Valley of CA. She grew up with a strong heart of serving others in the area of health and became a registered nurse for 40 years. Lyme disease turned her life around to seek after alternative therapies. She now teaches others in holistic health and nutrition. The Lord has been a strong influence in her life since she was a little girl being taught the Lord’s Prayer by her nana. Renee gave her heart to Jesus Christ at 8 years old. She and Edwin were brought to JPC by divine leading. They sold everything and downsized their lives. In their search for a church they could serve out their remaining years, they found JPC. They are excited about its location, new leadership, and vision to reach the lost.

Guy and Michelle were both brought up in Christ centered and loving homes. Guy grew up Lutheran and Michele in the Foursquare church. Their relationship with Jesus continues to grow each day. Guy and Michelle met swing dancing at the Crystal Ballroom. Twenty something years later, they still love dancing together. They live in Jacksonville with their three children - Evan, Margaret, and Elias.

Men’s Prayer Breakfast

The Men’s Prayer Breakfast will take a break

for June, July and August.

They will start back up on Saturday, September 14.

Deacon Thank Yous:

The “All Church Breakfast” last month was such a wonderful event, requir-

ing so many from our church family to pitch-in. Thank you to all who pro-

vided the abundance of food, set-up, take-down, and clean-up. We all

are blessed as a family when we come together to make things happen.

Thank you to those of you who graciously provide the beautiful quilts pre-

sented to the families having homes built by our Mexico Mission crews.

Your talents, time, and love poured into the quilts capture the love of God

given to these families in such a visible way.
