Ideas were put forward on how to incorporate the names of local soldiers who were killed in the two world wars as, at present, the names are on wooden plaques that are erected on every Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. Following consultation it was decided, in conjunction with the British Legion that the names of the fallen from the two world wars will be added to the front and back of the memorial, with the sides being left for the names of local people killed in other conflicts. The names will be in place in by the next Remembrance Sunday. Work will also be carried out by the Council to cut the trees back by the flagpole near the War Memorial, so the flag can be seen and lowered as a mark of respect on the appropriate days. The Town Council will also be hosting the British Legion and people attending Remembrance Sunday in the Grove, where entertainment and food will be provided. Keith Austwick from the British Legion said, ‘ We are appreciative of the Town Councils efforts in helping us to establish a permanent record of the names of local people who gave their lives in both World Wars. We look forward the unveiling of the War Memorial as soon as soon as the names are added.’ Dave Mothershaw Leader of the Council added, ‘It is a pleasure to be able to assist the British Legion in making the War Memorial into a lasting record of our war dead. We are always available to help local groups, especially in projects such as this one.’ For over forty years the Town Council has provided a summer play scheme free of charge for the children of our community. The aim of the play scheme is to provide children with the opportunity to participate in and experience a wide range of fun and enjoyable activities and games organised in a safe and secure environment. This year the play scheme will be held from 25th July to 19th August for children of 8-14 years at South Kirkby Colliery Welfare Club (the ‘cricket club’). The Wakefieldmysterieswritten by nick Lanedirected by andrew Loretto

Is it the greatest story ever told? Or are we still telling it?In this striking new production by Theatre Royal Wakefield, The Wakefield Mysteries – a series of plays written by the city’s guilds in the middle ages to tell the story of the bible – are given a 21st century kick. Rolling news, rap battles, poetry slams and TV debate shows mix

with modernised rhyme in this funny

and gripping look at the old and new

testaments and the city’s own recent

history.

Taking place at Wakefield Cathedral in

promenade style and performed by a

local cast of incredibly talented young

performers, this will be an experience

not to be missed.

Please note this production is performed

in promenade style, which means that

the audience follows the action around

the venue, inside and out. Seating will be

provided for those with limited mobility.

ANTI SocIAl BeHAvIouR ouR vIllAGeS ouR commuNITIeSIt seems that sometimes the minority can make things awkward for the majority. Just the other week there was a spate of vandalism in the area aimed at cars. It appeared that whoever was behind this was just carrying out such acts simply for fun. Meanwhile concerns have been raised by residents of different areas concerning gangs making their streets unruly. Garden sheds broken into bins set on fire and windows smashed are some of the issues affecting sections of our community.

Groups of teenagers congregating in specific locations add to the unease felt by people who live nearby. Although such behaviour is not just limited to communities.

For instance, a local man was out walking near the new Waste Recycling Plant and spotted somebody with an air rifle. The area and ponds have become a magnet for wild life. A number of days later he discovered a dead swan which appeared to have been shot through the neck with a pellet from an air rifle. Although notifying the relevant authorities it seems that little can be done to catch the culprit.

Although the police respond to such incidents often it seems that incidents of anti social behaviour can go unchecked and it appears that the perpetrators have a mandate to carry on as usual, although the police are often working quietly behind the scenes, but unfortunately the legal mechanism is in the main a long and drawn out process.

All too often vandalism and anti social behaviour can be put down to one or two people who act as ring leaders, often for younger children who attempt to emulate their behaviour. With austerity measures kicking in funding has been withdrawn from youth services and the police and other sectors, which means that often all agencies are stretched to the limit in dealing with incidents when they are reported. Meanwhile the voluntary and charitable sectors are also working to their limit, again due to funding being withdrawn. For instance a local youth club run by volunteers has had to shut down because they could not find any new premises, the shame about this is that the club was doing fantastic work in addressing problem behaviour in youths.

There can be no doubt that the Police Community Support Officers, the police, youth services and charitable bodies do excellent work in this area on limited resources. However they cannot do this without the assistance of the local community. Also the Town Council gets involved in putting things right, removing

graffiti, replacing bins and so on. Currently we are going through process of asking Wakefield Council to demolish the toilets and bus shelter on the Green in South Kirkby. We have acted on complaints received about youths and adults gathering near there causing a nuisance, as the toilets present a blind spot they cannot be monitored by CTV.

Meanwhile Hessle Town Council on Humberside became the first Town Council in this region to fund a Police Community Support Officer in 2011, spending a quarter of their budget on employing the officer. If you feel that this is something South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council should consider then please contact us. Other ideas could include funding a dedicated youth worker for the area. We are always open to idea and suggestions and would willingly facilitate and coordinate any meetings or forums to find a way forward in tackling the problem of anti social behaviour.

You can contact us on 01977 642159 or at [email protected] or call in and see us any time at the Grove.

Finally in regarding the recent spate of anti social behaviour Sgt Dave Lockwood from West Yorkshire Police said, ‘In relation to the recent acts of criminal damage in the South Kirkby and South Elmsall area West Yorkshire Police are still thoroughly investigating these offences. One local male has been arrested and questioned about these incidents and enquries are still ongoing. If anyone has any information or CCTV footage that may assist us at their home or business premises we urge you to make contact with us or call crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.’

powerful one will be a community interest company (not for profit) that volunteers to influence recreation activities available in our area. our aim is to be owned/run by the community.

Being a company that is not for profit doesn’t mean that the company will not make money. The company has to make enough money to pay the staff (which will be local people) and pay any bills etc. After the staffing costs have been made all the extra

funds are injected back into community projects which should maintain high quality standards at your chosen recreation activity. All profits made, how its used and the amount of salaries paid will become public information.

if you feel that you can offer the company any help please make contact: [email protected]

Message to Designer: Could the below logo be watermarked onto the page with the text talking about the Powerful One company above?

• The company will be run by a committee; this will comprise of local people who have an interest in or are involved in the community.

• Develop the sports/fitness activity industry in the SESKU area.

• Improve the quality of use at the existing free to access sports/activity sites.

• Build and manage new sites for recreation.• Supplement areas of recreation with access to good

nutrition.• Aim to fully equip sports clubs so future prospects have

everything they need to reach a professional level of development within their community.

• Develop a broad range of recreation activities so everyone can join in with something they love doing in their spare time.

• Build and maintain strong relationships between all the recreation providers

• Open an office for the community to drop into and share ideas, express their views in person and to find out about what recreation is available to them and how to get involved

• Build a website that informs people of the types of recreation available and how to take part and to give people a chance to share their ideas and ask questions at a time that suits them

• Award children for displaying qualities that we recognise as ones that all our children should acquire and also use local media to share this information so that the children have local people to aspire to

• Create a YOUTUBE channel which shows the community all that’s happening in recreation

• Build relationships with all ages in the community• Continue to develop the company’s knowledge to ensure

we are recreation experts• Produce a range of merchandise for people that are involved

in a sports/activity club to buy and wear with pride

Sponsors:

The Town Council wants to acknowledge the volunteers in our community who work for no pay and little praise to enhance the lives of people around them. Often such people go unnoticed and do not ask anything in return for the hard work they do. So we have got together with Wakefield Theatre and come up with the idea of the Community Champion Awards.

We have asked people from the South Kirkby and Moorthorpe area to nominate people who they feel are worthy of such an award. As such several nominations have been received but it is not too late to nominate someone who you might know who should be considered to receive a Community Champion Award. You can do this by e mail at [email protected] or by calling us on 01977 642159 and a form will be forwarded to you. To date we have received a large number of nominations.

Local businesses and organisations are also sponsoring the awards and their representatives will be there at the presentation night and the Council thanks them for their support and interest in this event.

We are working closely with South Kirkby Cricket Club (Pit Club) and with Dennis from the club as they are hosting the awards for us on Friday 15th July at 7pm.

It promises to be a great night with the award ceremonies taking place in two parts. Entertainment will be provided by the excellent duo Re-Mix and a Buffet will also be laid on for all attending the event. Your compare for the evening is the inimitable Mark Simpson who will entertain and amaze.

you. After the final award Re-Mix will do another set to finish the night off in style.

Besides being presented with an award the Community Champions will be treated to a trip to Wakefield Theatre with their guests for a pre show meal and a Musical. They will also meet the cast and be taken on the tour of the Theatre.

Tickets for the event are a nominal £2 each, with all proceeds from sales going to the Mayors charity. Remember that this includes your entertainment and food, bar prices at the club are very reasonable too.

David Mothershaw, Leader of the Council said ‘We came up with the idea of the Community Champion Awards as a means of recognising the hard working volunteers in the South Kirkby and Moorthorpe area who put hours of their own time to make our villages a better places to live in. We hope that the awards go some way in recognising and rewarding these selfless people for their time and efforts. It would be great to see a well supported and well attended event on the 15th of July and we look forward to seeing you all there.’

Finally if you know of any local businesses who might want to sponsor an award then please contact us.

Grants for local community groupsThe Town Council welcomes applications for assistance (financial or otherwise) from local groups/organisations for the benefit of the community. Applications will only be considered from local groups/organisations that either operate in, or benefit the people who live in, the township of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe.

The Town Council has to award grants lawfully, equitably and for the maximum benefit of local people so to ensure this we

have a policy with robust rules and criteria as well as a grant application form. The policy and the application form can be found in the Grants Section of the Town Council’s website: www.southkirkbyandmoorthorpe towncouncil.gov.uk or alternatively you can ask for a copy at the Town Council’s head office at the Grove – either in person or over the telephone.

If you wish to apply for a grant, or are thinking of doing so, please refer to the grants policy and the grant application form. For any further information please contact the Town Clerk.

The Town Council is currently reviewing all of its events and would welcome the views of the local community on the matter. Therefore, if you have any ideas, suggestions or comments regarding either the current/usual events provided (such as the recent Community Festival and Bonfire Night) or for any potential new events then please write to the Town Clerk or email [email protected].
