MARY BETH CABANA, Founding Artistic Director, has been a Principal Dancer with Cleveland Ballet, Ballet Oklahoma, Arizona Dance Theatre, and San Diego Ballet. She began her professional career at the age of 14 with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and graduated from the National Academy of Dance where she was a full scholarship student and member of the National Academy Ballet. She has performed extensively in the United States and has toured Europe performing in a wide variety of roles by such noted choreographers as Balanchine, Tudor, DeMille, Joos, Forsythe, Fokine, Petipa, and Nahat to name just a few. Ms. Cabana has been on the faculties of the School of Cleveland Ballet, Ballet Arts-Carnegie Hall, Dance Concepts-NYC and was the Principal Instructor and Administrator for Arizona Dance Theatre (Ballet Arizona). She has guest taught for Kiev Ukraine Ballet and Palace of Pioneers in the former Soviet Union, in France and Mexico and continues to guest teach throughout the United States. She has also directed summer intensive programs for Ballet Pacifica in Irvine, California (under the direction of Ethan Stiefel). As a choreographer, she has produced numerous original works for Ballet Tucson and has staged dances for Arizona Opera Company, Arizona Theatre Company, Yuma Ballet Theatre, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Ohio Ballet, and Burklyn Ballet Theatre. Since beginning in 1986, she has been responsible for the establishment of four professional training institutions in Southern Arizona including studios in Tucson and Nogales and branch programs in Patagonia and Sierra Vista. She has also established a 22 member professional company, two children’s performing ensembles, the Annual Summer Dance Workshop in Tucson, a Northern Arizona Dance Camp in Prescott, and International Dance/Cultural exchanges. She has been nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Tucson Pima Arts Council and recognized as an Outstanding Individual Artist by the Governor of the State of Arizona. She was invited by New York City Ballet Director Peter Martins to attend the School of American Ballet, being recognized as one of the foremost teachers in the United States as a part of National Teachers’ Weekend. She brings her wealth of experience to dancers of all ages. Her commitment to the cultivation of young talent continues as her students dance professionally in major American ballet companies and schools. Annual SUMMERDANCE WORKSHOPTHE BALLET TUCSON Annual Summer Dance Workshop in cooperation with the Universityof Arizona School of Dance was established in 1986 to provide the serious dance student theopportunity to train and perform in a professional environment.

Housed in the UA dance facility, the intensive workshop offers training for all levels. Curriculumincludes intermediate and advanced level of study of ballet technique, pointe, jazz, and modern dance.Special classes are offered in Russian character dance, stage make-up, classical variations, conditioning,and choreography. Elementary workshops and adult classes are also available and are held at Ballet ArtsStudios on Tucson Boulevard.

The faculty consists of Ballet Tucson’s outstanding artistic staff and professional dancers. In addition,guest teachers are brought in from prestigious companies and schools to offer students theexposure to broaden the scope of their dance education.

A final performance will be presented at the close of the workshop at the Stevie Eller DanceTheatre. Students who have attended the entire workshop have the opportunity to performoriginal choreography and classical repertoire. This year’s workshop performance will take place onSaturday, June 25 at 3:30 pm.

ELEMENTARY PROGRAM LEVEL ANew reduced price!Mon-Wed-Fri (9:00 am - noon) 8:30 am drop off time(Classes held at Ballet Arts Tucson BoulevardStudios)

For children 5 1/2 – 8 with little or no training.Primary ballet positions and terminology will becovered. Rhythm patterns are introduced alongwith the fundamentals of ballet in a creativeatmosphere. Daily ballet class, choreography,rehearsals and participation in final performanceon June 25 are included in the completeworkshop. Special classes are offered to exposeyoung dancers to jazz, tap, creative movement,ballet vocabulary and dance history. Relatedcraft sessions will also be held.

JUNIOR PROGRAMLEVEL BMon-Wed-Fri (approximately 11:30 am - 5:30 pm)(Classes held at UA Dance Studios)

For ages 9 - 12 who have completed at least oneyear of serious study. Proper body alignment,correct terminology, and the joy of dance will beemphasized. Ballet technique, modern dance, jazz,Russian character dance, stage make-up, andchoreography are a sample of the classes that areincluded in this comprehensive junior workshop.Classical choreography will be presented in the finalperformance.

TRAINEE/APPRENTICEAUDITION LEVELCandidates for Ballet Tucson trainee andapprentice positions will be selected fromSummer Workshop 2016. Dancers will berequired to participate in an intensive trainingprogram which will include participation in thefinal performance as part of the auditionprocess.

All new intermediate, advanced or pre-professionalstudents must audition for final placement onTuesday, May 31, 2016. Placement for techniqueand pointe is determined solely by the ArtisticDirector and staff. Classes are held Mondaythrough Saturday. The final workshop performancewill take place on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 3:30pm. This performance features all elementary,intermediate, and advanced students who haveattended the entire workshop.
