Transcript of Summer Art Show 2013 Catalogue
2012 – 2013 has been another year of exciting and ambitious ventures for the Art Department at PGS. The year began with the highly anticipated unveiling of the impressive 'Olympic Globe' at our Hilsea playing fields and it has been followed by a number of exhibitions by pupils of all ages in a variety of venues across the city, including the Round Tower, the Kings Theatre and the Third Floor Library. A particular highlight was 'The Big Draw' in October 2012, when Year 10 pupils worked alongside Artist-in-Residence, Chris Wood, in St. Thomas' Cathedral to create a collaborative and interactive response to the architecture of Old Portsmouth. In January 2013, Year 12 AS pupils were inspired by Nikolai Gogol's farcical short story, Diary of a Madman (1835), to devise a chilling and compelling installation which portrayed a dark descent into insanity.
The Year 13 IB Visual Arts pupils impressed visitors in March 2013 with their display of wide-ranging studio work and the spring term culminated in a mixed media exhibition at the Dockyard Apprentice Museum by Artist-in-Residence, Julie Graves, and Year 9 pupils. Their work included handmade brushes, etchings and wire sculptures and challenged viewers to re-examine objects that they would normally take for granted and to appreciate the level of technical skill involved in making the original shipbuilding tools.
The Art Department is delighted to hold this year's Summer Art Show at the Portsmouth Guildhall. The exhibition showcases work from Years 7 to 13 and highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the Art Department at PGS. We are very proud of their creative achievements and hope you will enjoy celebrating them with us at this historic venue in the city.

During the summer term, pupils created line drawings of a variety of insects before translating their designs into wire. The structures were then
embellished with wool and beads to create the eye-catching sculptures seen here.

Pupils studied the theme of time in response to 'The Lost Hour' programme which took place in a variety of venues across the city of Portsmouth in March
2013. Initially, the pupils studied a range of traditional and contemporary clocks before developing busy and bold compositions inspired by British artist Trevor Winkfield.
The paintings were originally on display in The Third Floor of the Central Library
over the Easter break.
During the autumn term, pupils worked in pairs to design,
construct and decorate complex three-dimensional masks from cardboard,
gumstrip and acrylic paint. The pupils made links between their own work and that of Pablo Picasso and Naum Gabo
during the project and the final outcomes seen here are the result of careful
planning, collaboration and execution.

to enhance the compositions.

If you tell a big enough lie and tell it Frequentlyenough, it will be believed
the victor will never be asked to
tell the truth
how fortunate for governments
that the people they administer
don’t think
i do not see why man should not
be just as cruel as nature
It is not the truth that matters, but victory

In Year 13, pupils pursue independent lines of enquiry. The personal outcomes seen here are the result of detailed
investigation and experimentation and their work is supported by 3000 word critical investigations into relevant
cultural and art historical sources.

IB Visual Arts allows pupils to determine their own subject matter and a key element of the
course is the identification with and understanding of, appropriate contextual and cultural sources. The course culminates in a
recorded viva where pupils are given the opportunity to discuss the concepts and
processes which underpin their work in detail.
