At SPLIT, we learn by doing. Campers train in challenge course facilitation on the University of Hartford’s high- and low-ropes courses, and attend workshops on management and leadership skills, team building, and self-discovery. SPLIT participants also gain hands-on experience working with Summer Place, Li’l Place, and Kinderplace campers.

Each of the SPLIT two-week sessions is built around a different curriculum, and campers leave the program with a greater sense of responsibility and competency, a strong work ethic, and more confidence in their decision-making and problem-solving abilities. Session I focuses on leadership and character development. Session II focuses on community service—including a SPLIT food drive to benefit the West Hartford food pantry. Session III focuses on job application and interview strategies, and includes guest speakers who expose the campers to many professional career opportunities. It is important to note that we cover all of these topics throughout the summer, but place more of an emphasis on a specific theme during each focused two-week period.

FACILITIESSPLIT meets at the Gengras Student Union on the University of Hartford campus. This is a great location for SPLIT because it is centrally located to Summer Place, Kinderplace, and Li’l Place. Although Gengras Student Union serves as their main hub, SPLIT campers have access to and utilize most of the University, including the Sports Center pool, the ropes course, Magnet School, and various classrooms on campus, as well as the adjacent athletics fields at Watkinson School.

FACULTY AND STAFFJack Kitching will return for his third season to the SPLIT program. Jack is no stranger to Summer Place. He started as a camper in first grade, was equipment coordinator for five years, was hired in 2017 as the SPLIT assistant coordinator, and will return for his second year as the SPLIT director. He teaches 10th- and 11th-grade students at the Harlem Children’s Zone in Brooklyn, New York. Sarah Sturgeon will be returning for her second season as the SPLIT assistant director. Sarah was a counselor at Summer Place for four years prior to taking on this new role. In addition, college-age counselors experienced in working with older campers are assigned to the program.

A staff medical team includes an on-site registered nurse and an on-call physician.

OFF-CAMPUS TRIPSEach session, organizers plan an off-campus trip that encourages campers to step outside of their comfort zones and open themselves up to new and varied experiences. In past summers, campers went kayaking on the Farmington River in Collinsville, hiking up to Heublein Tower, and climbing at the Riverfront Adventure challenge course. The tentative 2018 schedule includes a trip to Six Flags New England during Session I, a trip to Hammonaset State Park beach in Session II, and a visit to Brownstone Quarry in Portland during Session III. (Please note that these are subject to change.) In addition, trips are planned for high- and low-ropes activities, Laser Quest in Newington, and numerous off-campus community service projects.

RED CROSS SWIM INSTRUCTIONCampers participate in a Red Cross Aquatic Leadership program and work on their leadership skills in the pool. SPLIT campers work with the Summer Place lifeguards during the Kinderplace swim lessons, providing individualized lessons to our youngest swimmers.
